What do you think of when people say they're uninterested in civics?

  • Speaker #1

Well, I'm an election official, so I think civics is really cool, but I know it's not necessarily something everyone thinks is exciting.

  • Speaker #0

I get that. Arizona's the 48th state, but I think we're number one in lore. Our history helps us to show how the issues we're dealing with today have been shaped.

  • Speaker #1

Right? Arizona has so many big personalities, community movements, and major political events that make our state pretty original.

  • Speaker #0

There are a lot of stories that would surprise longtime Arizonans and transplants alike. For example, did you know in 1934, Arizona had a two-boat Navy?

  • Speaker #1

We had a Navy? I had no idea, and I'm an Arizona native. But if you fast forward to today, as one of seven swing states in the country, Arizona's outcomes are pretty unpredictable on almost all issues and races. Eyes across the country wait and watch on election night to see what our voters are going to do. On Beyond the Ballot AZ, we'll explore stories in Arizona's history, like social movements and wild, only in Arizona moments that shape our everyday life. and the issues that are impacting us today.

  • Speaker #0

Beyond the Ballot AZ is a new resource from the Citizens Clean Elections Commission, Arizona's only nonpartisan provider of voter information to encourage participation and confidence in the political system. This will be the stuff you didn't learn about in civics class. I'm your host, Tom Collins, Executive Director of Clean Election.

  • Speaker #1

And I'm Gina Roberts, Clean Elections Voter Education Director. Join us every other week as Tom and I look at how our state's history impacts today.
