Description
Last day of August, and a handful of numbers from the past week sit oddly together. Population, jobs, construction, air service and home sales are all up β Canopy reports nearly 4,000 contracts signed in July with mortgage rates in the upper 6s. But sales tax receipts came in below last year, layoffs are running 10% ahead, and a corporate headquarters is leaving. The catch: the transit plan, the Red Line, 25 miles of commuter rail β all funded by a sales tax, which is a percentage of the flat number, not the growing one. Plus: the Six Flags job count, finally β about 155 corporate positions moving to Texas by March, with Carowinds staying put. Charlotte FC win 2-0 at Atlanta and are home Saturday. And three new places opening around town.
