Description
Sunday night, Gregory Bovino stood in the parking lot of Manolo's Bakery in east Charlotte filming video with a podcast host. In November he ran Operation Charlotte's Web, the federal immigration surge that detained roughly 400 people here β and during it, Manolo's became a nightly gathering point for protesters. Owner Manolo Betancur came out and confronted him; they talked for about thirty minutes. Betancur's account: "I started shaking. I got scared. You know, it was very intimidating." He declined to sell them pastries. Here's the part worth sitting with: Bovino was removed from his post in January and left government service in March. On Sunday he was a private citizen with a camera. He had every right to be there, Betancur had every right to refuse him, nobody called police β and a business owner still says he started shaking. Whatever operated in that parking lot wasn't legal authority. It was recognition. Plus: Tuesday brings both the first day of school and the board vote on releasing the Crystal Hill investigation, Charlotte FC rallies past D.C. United, and the Bechtler buys only its second painting in sixteen years.
