Description
Charlotte's independent alternative paper shut down Monday after nearly eight years. A sale had been on the table β there was a letter of intent β until the person driving it left the buyer mid-negotiation. But the sale was the last chance, not the cause. Queen City Nerve's advertising came heavily from arts organizations, federal arts funding got cut, and an ad budget is the first thing a struggling nonprofit kills. A cut in Washington landed on a Charlotte theater, and a newsroom that had nothing to do with any of it closed. What the city loses isn't headlines β it's the second look, the story nobody assigned, the rezoning in a neighborhood with no lobbyist. Plus: North Carolina's budget makes the state's Flock license plate reader program permanent β before the SBI's own evaluation is due, and with less public reporting than the pilot required β and the two misuse cases in that debate are both ones this show reported.
