Description
In Thomasboro-Hoskins, just 3% of homes are within a half-mile of a full-service grocery store. Four years ago the Carolina Farm Trust set out to fix that β $1.5 million from the city, $6.7 million from the county, both COVID relief dollars. This July the nonprofit ceased most operations. What's there now is a renovated warehouse kitchen subleased to a caterer, and a GoFundMe with $4,000 in it against an $8 million gap. An audit goes to commissioners October 27th. Meanwhile the state is offering west Charlotte grocery stores as part of a $300 million package to win the I-77 toll lane vote β which is why today's story matters to a decision three weeks out. Plus: commissioners spend $3.2 million reopening Jail North with the main jail 400 people over capacity, and NCDOT still won't say what walking away from the toll lanes would cost.
