Hello, this is Debra Cohen and I'm here today to talk about two things that keep me young. One is this patch X39 by LifeWave and you can see I'm wearing it here. There are different places that you can wear it depending on what your issues are. These don't do the healing. These assist the body with the necessary ingredients to regenerate stem cells. So if that interests you, stick around. And the second thing that is my beauty secret is singing. I'm all about singing. Praising God. So if these things really interest you, then stick around for the next 30-ish minutes and I'll share my beauty secrets right after. this message. A Story and a Song podcast by Debra Cohen. Interfaith music every Sunday, 1130 a.m.
Eastern Time.

A story.
and a song about life.[End AD}. All righty. And this is Debra Cohen. And I hope you're having a lovely day. Today is... June 2025 and I am doing something fun this summer by trying a new hairdo. In case some of you have been following me, you're saying, what's with the black hair? Well, if you look at my promo pictures, because I'm competing in a contest for tophetmaker.org and there is only going to be one winner and the winner gets to sing. Central Park and share their song. I am blessed to say that I have made this past week the top 20 and I want to give a personal shout out to all of you people that voted for me. It's something that only one person will win and it's by the most votes. So how do you vote? I heard you say. I'm glad you asked. go to this website, https colon slash slash tophitmaker.org slash 2025 slash Deborah, D-E-B-R-A dash Cohen, C-O-H-E-N. I really would like to share my song with the world. Apparently there are 60,000 people that will go to this event in the fall of 2025. So I want to share my song Catfisher for two reasons. I didn't know what a catfisher was until I was on TikTok. And this guy starts chatting with me and says he's Robert Plant. True story. So I'm not going to tell you any more. If you want to know the story, if you haven't heard it already, go to the lyrics. You can find the lyrics for my song, Catfisher, on Bandcamp. That would be deborahcohenmusic.bandcamp.com. And another reason I would like to win is so that I could honor Robert Plant. And I'd really like to meet him. I don't know if he'll be there, but yes, I am a silly goose, and I believe in miracles, even if they're tiny ones. Even if they're silly ones. So anyway, the hair, I was getting to the hair. If you go to that website, actually I'll show you a clip of an ad right now so you can see the hairdo that I will wear if I win. And I'll be right back. It's a real short ad, so stick around [AD]:
You pretend to be someone I want to see, and you're using somebody else's name. Can you tell me God sent you on my way? And you want me to believe that you are Percy? I'm so tough and so smooth,
I want to be...
falling for the line [End Ad].
All right, so there was a little sneak peek of my song Catfisher. I hope to be able to sing it at the Global Citizen Festival this fall, and the only way I can win is with your daily votes. So check it out, tophitmaker.org slash 2025 slash Debra( D-E-B-R-A) dash Cohen (C O H E N). And so you see, I'm getting used to wearing black bangs. I'm sort of like, I was inspired by Deborah Harry, and I'm not going to tell you what band she is or was in. If you don't know, come on, man, look it up. I'm not going to make it easy for you, but my proposed hairdo will be the reverse of hers. She had black in the back and underneath, but platinum blonde on the top so i i'm gonna have black on the top and blonde underneath something like that just because it's fun you know come on ladies we always feel better when we leave the beauty parlor right yeah and speaking of feeling better these patches that are made by life wave i am a distributor so if you're interested in the patches wherever this video is posted in the archives DM me, make a comment if you're interested in buying the patches or maybe also becoming a distributor, being part of my team for my husband and I are actually, I didn't plan on selling them, but you know, how can I not share how much better I am, more energy, who doesn't need more energy, better sleep, who doesn't need better sleep and no brain fog, who doesn't need brain fog i don't i don't like brain fog a lot of people my age say wow it's because i'm getting older you know no i don't want to go that route come on man i don't know if share is using the patches but i aspire to be in her tribe you know forever young that's what i'm saying you know okay all right enough of that okay so the other thing that is a beauty secret of mine is singing Singing keeps the spirit within me alive. And hopefully you want to sing positive lyrics. I'm not talking about the hateful lyrics or the perverted lyrics like that talk about women like they're sex toys. Not those lyrics. I'm talking about praising God. No matter what your understanding is of God, because God reveals himself to us at different levels. different seasons and different times so nobody can say I know God and you don't that's ridiculous you know but whatever your understanding is of the God of the universe our Creator if if you look at a prayer book especially a Siddur which is a Jewish prayer book it's all about singing especially the Psalms when you're warming up on in your congregation on Saturday or Sunday or Friday night, whenever you go. So he likes, or if you're into this she thing, God Elohim in Hebrew is masculine and feminine. So there you have it. The Shekhinah is the feminine aspect of God. And El Elyon is the great God of our universe. So he loves it when we sing to him. And that is one of the things that keeps my love alive for God and for my husband and for people. I am everyday people. Yeah, yeah. Okay, anyway. Thank you for Washington Post. for this article that I'm about to share with you about how singing is beneficial for your health and your beauty by Alexandra Moe. The choir met on Wednesdays in a London church and if the tube was on strike, it took Hazel Hardy two buses across the city to get there, but no matter. By the time she entered the hall, she says she'd escaped whatever was outside, including her cancer. The choir members who met were all familiar with cancer. They were patients, caregivers, and oncologists, but they didn't discuss it. They were there to sing. As a side note, take note, you people that come to congregation and want to dump. on others with your issues. We're not there. I mean, yes, we're there to support each other, as my Rabbi Danny had a great message this past Shabbat. But if that's all you do every time you talk to somebody is unload and talk about your problems, please don't do that to people, especially on Shabbat. You're supposed to come with joy in your hearts. If you have problems, go see a shrink okay all right They were there to sing, to have a bit of fun, to meet people. For Hardy, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer shortly before joining the group, it was a new kind of family. After rehearsal, some of the singers provided a saliva sample to researchers examining whether singing affected their health and mood. And it did, positively. And I believe that, which is why I'm sharing this information with all of you. The Sing With Us study, which enrolled Hardy and 192 others, is part of a growing body of research that points to the physical and mental health benefits of singing with others. Sing With Us linked singing in the choir to reduced stress hormones and Increase cytokines, which are proteins that can boost the body's ability to fight serious illness. Are you listening to me? Instead of moping or open your mouth and sing, the first thing you're going to say, the naysayers, I can't sing. Well, yes, you can. If you have a voice, you can take lessons. So get over yourself. Take some vocal lessons. You can even take them online if you don't want to embarrass yourself in front of a real teacher. OK, so other studies have found a connection between singing generally with lessened anxiety, stimulated memory for those with dementia, increased lung capacity and an easing of postpartum depression. So if you're down and out or in a funk, start singing. Singing groups such as choirs, and I have a singing group in my congregation called Rising Song Clearwater, support the total growth of the human being, says Stanley Thurston, who founded the Heritage Singing Chorale in D.C. to preserve African American choral music, and serves as an artistic director. Although many choirs in the U.S. operate out of churches, Plenty of others are community-based, including Heritage. And I would like to give a shout out for my singing group, which is a Hadar community group. Choirs are large families, he says, and singing in them promotes social bonding, which contributes to a sense of belonging and joy. Research bears this out. Studies have found that group singing fosters trust, cooperation, and social cohesion. But choirs and singing have also been associated with the spread of the coronavirus during the pandemic, although at least one study has raised questions about this. These days, so obviously this was written then. Many have scaled back COVID protocols, such as requiring masks at all rehearsals, but still ask singers to monitor their health, please, don't come if you're sick, and stay home with a sore throat, fever, congestion, or excessive coughing. Believe it or not, you know, many people don't think of others, they just come in half. hack and cough and sneeze on you without covering their mouth. I'm like, coubreté alto, sir. Other ensembles now offer virtual rehearsal options. It's a new world, and trying to keep everyone healthy is part of a choir director's job, says Thurston. In the U.S., choir singing has not fully regained its pre-pandemic popularity, says Lisa W. Beth. Vice President of Communications and Membership for Chorus America, an advocacy organization. But in 2019, some 54 million Americans sang in choirs, and those who did were found to be more optimistic, more likely to vote, less lonely, possess strong relationships, and will more likely contribute positively to their communities than non-singers. Oh yes, I'm sorry, but we have to give a shout out for these people that sing in my group. Yes, just a little clap. All right. A sense of achievement comes from creating notes with the body and by working together over many months to master a work. So for my rising song peeps, don't be... Feel bad if you don't get the song the first time. We're there to practice every month. The text is also inspiring or beautiful, Thurston says. So despite the day's travails, choir members leave rehearsals feeling, this is a very positive thing that I can be part of. It's choir's social environment that enhances the already positive effects of singing, says Katie Warren. a research fellow in social science at University College London. Warran coordinated Sing With Us and studies how arts interventions affect health outcomes. Singing is calming, which produces physiological benefits, but joining a singing group is also about making meaningful relationships, Warran says, for example. The choir Hardy joined after her cancer diagnosis wasn't a support group, but rather a shared activity that can increase self-esteem and self-efficacy and that can produce more stable increases in well-being, Warran says. But what if you think you can't sing? If you can breathe and make sound, you can sing and receive its benefits, says Susie Zump. Oh, thank you, Susie, for saying that. Creative Director of ENO Breathe, a joint initiative of the English National Opera and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Developed alongside respiratory and medical experts from Imperial College London, the program specializes in relieving breathlessness and anxiety for people with long... COVID. Yes, I'm dealing with it. Actually had breathlessness to the point where I didn't think I was going to be able to sing anymore. I mean, I was really desperate and that's when I found LifeWay patches, which also have helped me with breathlessness, as well as pushing through with the right tools, such as the X39 patch and persevering by singing, You have to believe that you can overcome your issues, your shortcomings. So let's talk about lullabies. Why lullabies soothe the singer too. A hallmark of long COVID is over breathing, she says, and feeling air starved. I deal with that sometimes. By extending exhalations through sound exercises, breath is retrained. Participants join in online groups of 20 with their microphones muted, eventually singing lullabies, and in that way they discover the power of singing to soothe, Zump says. It might be Zumpe, but Zumpy sounds better, doesn't it? Z-U-M-P (as in Peter) E. Zumpe. We may think of lullabies as rhymes for lulling newborns, but they also soothe the singer. So let me take a sip while you think about that. I'm drinking mushroom coffee, by the way. When you breathe in to communicate a lullaby's message, you breathe differently, Zumpy says. You calm the body and engage emotionally. She quotes the late neurologist and author Oliver Sacks, says, Music uniquely among the arts, is both completely abstract and profoundly emotional. It has no power to represent anything particular or external, but it has a unique power to express inner states of feelings. Music can pierce the heart directly, end quote. Some 2,300 people across the UK have completed the six-week EN. O, breathe class. Even many of the most nervous singers now perform in person on the London Coliseum stage, Zumpe says. E, E as in Edward, N as in Nancy, O as in Oscar. Look it up. E-N-O, breathe class. Singing has numerous health benefits for older adults too. Here I am. Fewer falls. Doctor visits and prescription drugs, pure, I'm saying. Better social connections and better cognitive function, according to a study sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. Well, come on there, my baby-booming friends. Get a grip and come join the group. For Hardy, singing with her choir was a celebration. She eventually sang Christmas carols at a hospital in South London while patients received chemotherapy. She says, it brings me joy to think about it. It was more than a choir. It was something that brought people together. The first song that she learned was, I can see clearly now the rain is gone. But the real showstopper was, I will survive, with Hardy convincing the group to throw more feeling into it. go on now go walk out the oh oh these are the lyrics i i really i was a rock chick so i didn't listen to this i will survive stuff but who sang that anyway i will survive go on now go walk out the door just turn around now because you're not welcome anymore sorry i don't know the phrasing the troop belted out hardy was singing to her cancer with those words she says and she was in the choir. because she wanted to move on from it, move on from your shortcomings. When one of the choristers died of cancer, the group sang, I can see clearly now at her memorial service, Hardy says. Hardy's cancer, which returned a second time, is now in remission. When you attach singing to an anniversary or a memory of others, it gives meaningful comfort. says Eugene Rogers, artistic director of the Washington Chorus. To recognize the 60th anniversary of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.'s I Have a Dream speech, he directed, quote, scenes from the life of a martyr, end quote, and Durifle Requiem at the Kennedy Center in April. Requiems have filled choir repertoires as in-person performances have returned. One role of choirs moving forward is speaking to today's issues and connecting different communities by the stories told, Rogers says, noting that the last fall saw the highest choir participation in Washington Chorus's history. At Heritage Signature Choir, about half of the choir and half of the audience have returned since COVID shut things down, says Thurston. For many, he adds, there was no choice but to continue. Recalling a woman arriving at a recent rehearsal not long after a hospital stay who said the choir was good for her recovery. She says, it affects the way you feel about being alive. It's an expression of, yes, I am here. This feeds my soul. And I hope you enjoyed that encouraging message. This is indie artist Deborah Cohen. trying on my new hairdo if i am to win the contest tophetmaker.org which means i would get to sing in new york city this fall a song of mine called catfisher and if you're interested in the energy life wave patches you can message me in the comments or email me. A story.
and a song about life.[End AD}.
