Description
Kevin DuBrow was more than just the frontman of Quiet Riot; he was the heart and soul of the band, an electrifying performer whose powerful voice helped define the sound of 1980s heavy metal. Born on October 29, 1955, in Hollywood, California, DuBrow was drawn to music at an early age, idolizing legendary vocalists like Steve Marriott and Rod Stewart. His love for rock ‘n’ roll was undeniable, and he carried that passion throughout his career, eventually making Quiet Riot one of the most iconic bands of its era.
DuBrow formed Quiet Riot in the mid-1970s alongside guitarist Randy Rhoads, though the band struggled to gain recognition in its early years. Despite releasing two albums in Japan, they had little success in the United States. However, after Rhoads left to join Ozzy Osbourne’s band, Quiet Riot reassembled with a new lineup, featuring guitarist Carlos Cavazo, bassist Rudy Sarzo, and drummer Frankie Banali. This iteration of the band would change rock history forever with the release of their groundbreaking 1983 album, Metal Health.
With Metal Health, Quiet Riot became the first heavy metal band to top the Billboard 200 chart, a feat that helped legitimize the genre in the mainstream music industry. The album’s lead single, a cover of Slade’s “Cum On Feel the Noize,” became an instant classic, largely due to DuBrow’s raw and commanding vocal performance. His raspy, yet powerful delivery resonated with fans, bringing an energy that made the song—and the entire album—unstoppable. Tracks like “Metal Health (Bang Your Head)” further showcased his talent, making it clear that DuBrow was one of the most dynamic and passionate vocalists of his time.
However, DuBrow’s outspoken personality and rebellious nature often led to tensions within the music industry and even within the band itself. His criticism of other bands and the record industry, combined with his party-hard lifestyle, resulted in friction that led to his departure from Quiet Riot in 1987. Yet, his absence was temporary, and he eventually rejoined the band, continuing to release music and perform well into the 2000s. Despite the ups and downs, DuBrow remained devoted to Quiet Riot, keeping its legacy alive for longtime fans and new generations of rock enthusiasts.
Tragically, Kevin DuBrow’s life was cut short when he passed away on November 19, 2007, from a fatal drug overdose. His death was a heartbreaking loss for the rock and metal community, leaving behind a legacy that still resonates today. His influence on heavy metal vocals, as well as his larger-than-life stage presence, continues to inspire musicians and fans alike. Quiet Riot has since continued in his absence, with various lineup changes, but no one has been able to truly replicate the energy and charisma that DuBrow brought to the band.
For those who still cherish his memory, Quiet Riot merchandise remains a way to honor DuBrow’s legacy.
