A spooky-season strange-phenomena episode of Fear & Wine. The Mothman of Point Pleasant. Before the movie, there was Point Pleasant, West Virginia: a small Appalachian town built on an abandoned WWII TNT plant, ancient burial mounds, and Cold War nerves. In Part 1 of our two-part Mothman deep dive, Kristin traces the seven-foot, red-eyed figure back through 48,000-year-old cave paintings, Mesopotamian demons, Welsh death omens, and Shawnee tradition, before landing on November 1966, when two young couples reported a winged creature outside the old North Power Plant. From there, the story widens: John Keel, the Men in Black, sewing-machine salesman Woodrow Derenberger and his telepathic visitor Indrid Cold, and the December 1967 collapse of the Silver Bridge that ended the sightings and turned a cryptid into an omen.
