Description
Spanish culture, tapas, friendship and cultural differences: why does splitting the bill not necessarily mean the same thing in France and Spain?
In this new episode of Intercultural Surprises, I take you to Madrid, where, at the age of 18, I discovered a slightly different way of sharing a meal… and perhaps of building friendships too!
It all starts with an evening out with friends at a bar in Madrid. The dishes are ordered for everyone to share. They arrive in the middle of the table, everyone helps themselves, and we all enjoy the evening together… Then, at the end, the bill is split equally among everyone. As a young French student, I was wondering how I was supposed to pay my share when I had no idea exactly what I had eaten or how much the others had ordered!
In France, we have a saying: “Good accounting makes good friends.” We generally like to know who pays for what, so that nobody feels they have been treated unfairly. But in Spain, I got the impression that, during this kind of meal, people could more easily set aside the question of who had consumed what and focus instead on the pleasure of being together. What if these two approaches reflected different ways of nurturing friendship?
From Madrid’s tapas bars to the long communal tables of Catalan calçotadas, I explore shared meals, fairness, conviviality and those small everyday gestures that reveal so much about how we relate to others. Because behind something as simple as splitting a bill, there may be much bigger questions: How do we build connections? How do we strengthen a sense of belonging? And, above all, how do we make sure everyone feels they have a place at the table?
Of course, this is not about setting two countries against each other or claiming that everyone behaves in the same way. It is about exploring the different ways of thinking that may lie behind our everyday habits.
In this episode: 🇪🇸 Spanish culture and tapas, 🇫🇷 cultural differences between France and Spain, 🥂 friendship and conviviality, 💶 splitting the bill and fairness, 🌍 intercultural understanding and a sense of belonging.
An episode that invites you to look differently at meals with friends… and to wonder whether, in the end, what matters most is not who paid for what, but what brings us together around the table.
