Between the lies of an unstable colleague and the exploitation of a shameless boss, I finally snap. I end up slamming the door shut just as the end is inside. Keep your wings, le podcast. Chapter 15. Enough is enough. It's the rush in Bleinheim. As the tourist season kicks into high gear, visitors are pouring in and the campsites are filling up fast. It's the same story at the Thai restaurant. While this is great news for my paycheck, I'm starting to feel squeezed from all sides. and it's getting on my nerves. My nights aren't exactly restful either. Between the noise, the cold, despite my two hot water bottles, and the dawn light waking me up at sunrise, I'm exhausted. To top it off, Ash suddenly decided to quit. It was a shock to everyone, but then again, maybe not that much of a surprise.
Ash decided to leave us. She found another job elsewhere.
She felt she wasn't respected enough here.
The new managers declare, looking distraught as the campsite is fully booked for the next two weeks. Now, only Beth, myself and the young managers are left to pick up the slack, cleaning rooms while managing the front desk. But why did she leave, I ask?
She claimed we were overworking her, which wasn't true. And whenever she left a difficult room,
meaning messier than usual,
she felt we should have checked it before and passed it off to you, since you were the new guy.
Oh, really? I said surprised. That's nice of her. I had no idea.
You will probably have to work mostly with Beth now, because all the large room need cleaning and it would take her all day on her own.
No problem. To my great surprise, Beth was the polar opposite of how Ash had described her. She was cheerful, friendly and far less self-absorbed.
Have thought you didn't like me.
She blurt out after our first day working together. Oh, not at all. Ash told me such horrible things about you that I ended up believing her. I was moved by her life story, but I've been a bit disappointed by what I've heard since.
Which story?
Beth joked.
The one where she tells everyone she did nothing wrong even though she stabbed someone with a pair of scissors? or that she's homeless when she's been living at her sister for a year.
My eyes widen and my jaw drop as I listen to Beth and Ravel hash stories. Or should I say lies?
I caught her knocking on our guest's door, telling them she worked here but was homeless, asking if they had anything to give her. Lion knows and already schooled her for it.
Beth had it.
And don't worry, I was just as shocked when I found out the truth.
I was floored.
She's very moody and, unfortunately, unreliable. I should even complain about always doing the dirty work. Insisting it should be yours, because you were new.
Yet, I had never complained about gross room, you can't predict them anyway. For Ash that was unconceivable, she would even inspect my rooms to find the slightest flaw. Couldn't understand why, as I thought we got along. Hm, apparently not. The following days were a living hell, we were short staffed, and almost every room was booked every single day. We had new hires, but they all quit after a few days. The organization left much to be desired. We worked days on end without a break, sometimes without even a chance to eat. We had to go faster and faster while dealing with guests who were increasingly demanding, messy or just plain drunk. Finishing at 3pm, eating a quick bite, chowering and walking 20 minutes into town for my second job at the restaurant was becoming grueling. All to return late at night to sleep in a tent in sub-zero temperatures. What a life. At the restaurant it was the same old song, I felt squeezed and completely disrespected. It seemed the more I gave, The more I tried to be nice and tolerant, the more people woke all over me. The servers didn't even bother scrapping food off the plate anymore. They just tossed them into the sink where I was washing. I had turned my back for two minutes and I found chicken scrap and soggy vegetables floating in the sink. My blood was boiling, but I tried to keep my cool. However, one day, when we were supposed to take a break together, my boss told me to start eating without them. Ten minutes later, she arrived with all the servers and gave me a pat on the back.
Time to get back to it. We can't afford such long breaks.
I didn't say a word and went back to work, only to realize that she and all the servers were sitting right in the middle of the kitchen to take their time. Their chairs were blocking my already narrow workspace, forcing me to ask them to move a few inches every single time I passed. After 20 minutes, I snapped. They were making a mess, spilling food and taking their sweet time right in my way. I slammed the plates down and exploded. I don't understand why we didn't all take our breaks together, because I can't work like this. I'm moving at a snail's pace, wasting my time and energy. You call this organization?
What's wrong with you tonight? If you don't want to work, just go home.
Seriously? Fine, I'm going home. I left the dishes where they were, grabbed my things and slammed the door. It was a cinematic exit that felt like the final of a bad TV show, but I was done. I had been pressured from both sides and reached my saturation point. Fatigue and a lack of recognition broke a passion I thought was indestructible. I had felt this before in Belgium. You know, that horrible feeling when you give your all to prove yourself and your boss starts taking it for granted. When they demand more hours, pile on responsibilities and offload their own task onto you. I felt exploited. Paid minimum wage about 8 euros an hour. Was it worth being a doormat? I decided it wasn't. After a few days of silence, I had to speak with my boss. We apologized to each other and returned to work since I only had 10 days left before leaving the South Island again. It was a chance to earn a little bit more money and fulfill my responsibility before departing. I cleared all my things and packed up my tents after more than two months of intense labor. Goodbye campsite, goodbye restaurant. After 15 months in New Zealand, it was time to take stock. What an adventure. I never imagined I would enjoy this trip so much and yet I met wonderful people. I rediscovered that sense of travel and adventure I'd explored in Australia, but this time, I had experience on my side. I knew what I wanted and how to get it. I didn't repeat the same mistake and could focus on my main goals, traveling and securing my future. Next up, Vanuatu for one last wild experience.
