Between a few beers, well-placed insults, and throwing kiwis in the orchard, life in the share house is in full swing. But in the middle of the chaos, there's Yanis, 20 years old, a hardcore party animal, and a devout Christian. Chapter 6. I pray, therefore I am. Life goes on. Our backs are in agony, our beer consumption is hitting new heights, and discarded kiwi buds litter the ground. We take refugees in movie nights, in short, a routine as set in. Among the various personalities in the house, one in particular surprises me. Yannis, 20 years old, originally from Greece but living in the Netherlands, is what you would call a brat. He's a big guy with messy curly hair, a love of food and a constant need to mess around. I get along well with him but I can see several glaring flaws, likely due to his youth. There's an hint of selfishness, Don't give a damn attitude and a competitive streak that makes him wants to be the best at everything. Despite this, we become friends quickly. He has a jovial side, is capable of deep thought every now and then, and above all, is open to discussion and self-reflection. This strange character was full of surprises. After hearing him call his girlfriend a bitch or a fat pig in a jokey but not really way, he casually informed me that he was a devout Christian and believed Jesus Christ would save us all from hell. I was floored. Here was a Christian who didn't look alright like any believer I had ever met. He swore constantly, drank to excess, and shattered every stereotype of a religious person. Every now and then, he would leave his bible lying on the table. Was it a way to remind us of who he was? Was he afraid we would have forget? Certainly, when I was watching him in the hall church, trying kiwis at people, or giving me a sack tap, he didn't exactly scream religious pity to me. He drove fast, did donuts in the dirt, and listened to Christian rap. He was the polar opposite of the typical image of a believer. One day, I worked up the courage to ask him came why he believed.
When I was a kid, I was a troublemaker.
He told me.
I didn't listen at school, I didn't care about anything.
So exactly like now then, I replied with a white grin.
It was different, asshole. Anyway, my mother got seriously healed. The doctors were pessimistic. They say she wouldn't make it easily and that she had lose the use of her legs. I remember praying so hard, hoping with all my heart that God will save her. Every day that passed, I waited for a miracle. for something to save her and not leave me all alone.
What happened next?
One day, and the doctors could never explain it, she started feeling better. She began to heal with no logical explanation. After several months, she was able to walk again. The doctor was stunned. They still can't explain it. To me, she is a miracle. That's my proof that God exists. In my village in Greece, everyone knows her story. That's why they call her there, the miracle.
You don't think she might have just finally responded to the treatment or... Just found the inner strength to fight? Impossible. He repeated.
When you face that kind of experience, you can only accept it as a sign from Jesus Christ. From that moment on, I became a believer.
Okay, I understand.
Were you ever a believer?
He asked. Um, actually, when I was younger, I was quite religious. But yeah, not anymore. I prefer to leave my destiny in my own hands rather than in the hands of some higher power.
Ah, but if you think that way, it's because he made you react that way. There's always a reason.
This conversation opened the door for more talks with him and his girlfriend. She regretted never having a sign as strong as Yanis, but she hadn't given up hope of having one someday. They tried several times to get me to change my tune, but I stood my ground. Every time I tried to give them my point of view, they would do a mental gymnastic to bring it back to God. It was extremely difficult for me to take their words seriously, because their logic completely erased free will, some things that irritates me to no end. When I confronted Yanis and his girlfriend about a contradiction or certain behavior, They would simply answer that God would forgive them. They operated on the principle that no one is perfect, and it's normal to make mistakes. It was a convenient mindset, though it meant they never truly had to question themselves. Every now and then, they would take some day off to go to church. If you think going to confession will make God forget what an asshole you are, you're a real optimist, I told him once. Despite it all, the atmosphere remained friendly, which was what mattered the most to me. In the end, religion was never addressed head-on, but I could feel a certain judgment through the snide remarks. When I told them about my Tinder days, So mix of contempt and confusion in their eyes.
You know, you're making all those girls suffer by lying to them.
No, I'm honest with them. I don't lie and I don't pretend to be in love or looking for something serious. And that doesn't stop me from creating connection with them. Even if there are many of them. I defended myself.
Poor girls. I feel sorry for them.
His girlfriend would had perplexed by my answers. The paradox was that despite his judgment, I was probably the person the couple got along with best in the entire house. Hallelujah.
