Between secret contracts and extreme tiredness, I discover an experimental orchard where red, blue or even fluorescent kiwi fruit are born. A fascinating tale that marks the end of 800 hours of grueling labor. Enjoy the episode. Keep Your Wings, Le Podcast. Chapter 7. The Forbidden Fruits I've had it with kiwis. I loathed them. I see them everywhere. In the orchard, around our house, in my dreams and even on supermarket shelves. I can't help but stare at them and judge the fruit I find at Condon, one of New Zealand's biggest supermarkets. Hey guys, look at these These kiwis are flat How did they even make it to the shell? What a bunch of amateurs I would laugh before realizing how pathetic that sounded. I was in a desperate need of sleep. Every day was the same old song. We changed orchards frequently, but some spots, let's be honest, were worse than others. Rows were too low, an overwhelming amount of fruits that forced us to work even faster, sloped terrance or areas swarming up with mosquitoes and other stinging bastards. However, one day we were given the address for a new altar. Usually, a change of scenery was exciting. But if the new spot was far away, it was a nightmare. It meant getting up even earlier. To our surprise, the meeting point was only 10 minutes away. It was enough to put us in a good mood for another 10-hour shift. When we arrived, Kumar was waiting for us with another manager we had worked with before.
Good morning, everyone.
The manager began.
I hope you're ready because we've got a lot of work to do.
Shut up. I mutter under my breath a total prick. We never miss a change to make a snide remark.
Today is a bit different. I've called you in for a special task. We are in a secret orchard.
Secret?
Yanis interrupted.
What's the secret about your orchard?
Just a minute. I'm not done yet.
He snapped.
I called this team because I know Kumar has good workers. I also know you work every single day, which suits me because I want this done as fast as possible. We have five days to finish the entire orchard.
Five days? One of us replied. But it's massive.
Quite. I'm not finished.
The boss barked, raising his hand.
This orchard is special. That is why I am forbidding you from taking photographs, mentioning its location, or even talking about it to your families. We're going to have you signed contracts so this deal is legal and the terms are clear. Do I make myself understood?
The boss has done his little show, The Threatening Tone, the special mission for his little hands. We were just backpackers. Interchangeable parts, ready to be used, squeezed and twisted in every direction. Watch it from the outside, we bake on our usual task. But something wasn't right. As I started my row, I noticed that the first block, bordered by massive wooden structure, was nothing like the second. The trees were different. The fruits had strange shapes and bizarre colors. I stood there, perplexed. Was I dreaming? Was it just the way the light was hitting them? Nope. Here we looked apple green. almost fluorescent. I kept thinning, focusing my eyes on every anomaly. Suddenly, I came face to face with a cluster of kiwis that had a reddish tint. I plucked a bad fruit and, out of curiosity, crushed it under my boot. To my total shock, the inside was deep red. It was the first time I had ever seen such a thing. After doing some digging later, I found out that some countries had already trialed a strange raspberry-flavored fruit, the result of genetic manipulation. As one news site put it, From a marketing perspective, the red color is a huge advantage in China, because it symbolized good luck and wards of evil. But that wasn't all. The more I worked, the weirder the fruit became. Kiwis with bluish or yellowish hues became common. My eyes weren't ready for this, even after 50 hours in that field. It was easily the most surreal experience of my time in the orchard. This place was a laboratory for new varieties, a place where they try anything and everything. Once we finished that orchard, we went back to the traditional fields. Did they blur together again? If it wasn't for the group, I would have cracked. I would have gone insane. In total, I worked 3 months non-stop in the Kiwi Farms, nearly 800 hours. It was a grueling, exhausting time, but it was necessary to save money I needed to keep traveling. It's now January, I'm leaving my crew behind, promising them that we all reunite on the South Island. A promise we will actually keep the very next month. But for now, the real adventure was finally about to begin.
