  • Dr. Brian Anderson

CAP is one of the first specialty societies that we are working with in CHAI to develop the kinds of content to train pathologists about everything that we've been talking about.

  • Robert Johnson

Welcome to the Path News Network Daily Edition powered by the College of American Pathologists. I'm Robert Johnson. It's Wednesday, September 17th. CAP25 is in the books. Everyone has gone home. This is our final report from Orlando, Florida. Leading the news today, a partnership between the CAP and the Coalition for Health AI, also known as CHAI. Dr. Brian Anderson is CEO and co-founder. He says the partnership will help answer some of the most important questions about AI's role in pathology.

  • Dr. Brian Anderson

What does responsible AI mean to pathologists? CHAI and CAP are partnering together. How do we educate the future providers in medical schools, in residencies? CHAI and CAP are partnering together. How do we think about enabling and creating a network of data sets to train the kinds of models that are going to serve all of us? CHAI and CAP are going to be working on that together.

  • Robert Johnson

The MOU announced here in Orlando covers research and development, education and outreach, data sharing and evaluation. Also today Dr. Aaron Han is evaluating how to leverage his international experience on behalf of the CAP as a new member of the Board of Governors.

  • Dr. Aaron Han

I've seen the program grow I've seen the brand of CAP resonate with people from many different international markets and everyone's concern for lab quality is the same.

  • Robert Johnson

His plan is to help find ways to address challenges and seize opportunities while protecting the CAP brand.

  • Dr. Aaron Han

We don't dilute our brand. We don't dilute the quality of the product. But there are definitely opportunities internationally, and I do hope to contribute to the board in those conversations.

  • Dr. Meredith Herman

It just was very meaningful that the CAP and the community recognizes the work that I do as valuable and meaningful. So I'm still processing all of it, to be completely honest.

  • Robert Johnson

Dr. Meredith Herman, the CAP's 2025 Junior Member of the Year, is grateful for the recognition of her work to promote pathology to medical students. Much of that communication happening with her 8,200 followers on TikTok.

  • Dr. Meredith Herman

I think people attribute pathology to autopsies and you know being in the morgue and I want to show them it's so much more than that there's something for everybody in pathology.

  • Robert Johnson

At first Dr. Herman says the TikTok account was a place to share her artwork earning her the unofficial title as the pathology artist.

  • Dr. Meredith Herman

And then I said you know I don't want to just do pathology art content I want to mix it up a little bit so I started getting into residency and I was like you know maybe I can show some stuff I'm doing behind the microscope show them some tissues show them you know what it looks like as a resident and answer questions. It kind of evolved.

  • Robert Johnson

Finally today, pathology residents have a new chair, Dr. Cullen Lilley, a third-year resident at UCLA.

  • Dr. Cullen Lilley

My goal as chair is to listen to all the people that I have at the table. I'm not here to tell people what to do. I really want to hear what people have to say. I really am a big proponent of listening more than talking.

  • Robert Johnson

Dr. Lilley says the list of issues facing residents is rather long.

  • Dr. Cullen Lilley

I think there's a lot going on right now in residency training and education and pathology in general, and we need to provide the resources that residents need at this moment.

  • Robert Johnson

That's all for our coverage of CAP25. Get more information about these stories by visiting the links in the show notes. For additional reporting, watch Nancy Johnson's final CAP25 newscast from last night. It's now available on YouTube. You can also search our inbox for our CAP25 email newsletters. We sent four. Catch up on everything that happened at the meeting. Those are edited by Charles Fiegl and Angela Panateri. For all of us reporting on CAP25 here in Orlando, I'm Robert Johnson. We'll see you next year at CAP26 in Las Vegas.
