A national meeting focuses on helping pathologists stay current in a changing field and keeping pathology all in the family. These stories and more coming up next. This is Path News Network Daily Edition from the College of American Pathologists. I'm Nancy Johnson. It's Monday, March 2nd. The Council on Education met in San Antonio, Texas over the weekend to discuss how to deliver the best learning experiences for members. Dr. Raj Dash chairs the council and says a key focus is technology like digital pathology, which has changed the way members work.
- Dr. Raj Dash
You can layer artificial intelligence and machine learning on top of the way in which we practice. This has the potential to allow a young pathologist, a new in practice pathologist to operate at the same level as a very senior experienced pathologist.
- Nancy Johnson
Pathologists must stay at the forefront of molecular medicine and genomics as they learn more about disease processes and the ways diagnostic information gets communicated.
- Dr. Raj Dash
Keeping our pathologists up to date on areas such as the way in which we classify hematologic neoplasms because we learn more about the molecular aspects of certain diseases remains a strong area of focus for the college to make sure that our pathologists are up to date. pathologists are, from a scientific standpoint, up to date.

Designing education materials is intentional work. The CAP wants to provide curricula that members can use right away in their practices.
- Dr. Raj Dash
We're trying to come together and put together very concise, targeted educational offerings, both online as well as in person, that will efficiently but effectively allow our members to participate in programs that they can't get anywhere else.

Measles cases are climbing across the United States, with more than 900 confirmed infections reported by the CDC in just the first weeks of the new year. Public health experts warn measles is the canary in the coal mine, signaling that falling vaccination rates you could open the door for other preventable diseases to resurface. Two doses of the MMR or MMRV vaccines typically provide lifetime protection, but communities need at least 95% immunity to maintain herd protection. Doctors caution that if coverage continues to slip, the nation could risk losing its measles elimination status, and we may see additional outbreaks of other once-controlled infections. The CAP Foundation is looking to fill its junior board member position, and one current leader says the experience transformed her. Dr. Hafsa Nabak, a fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, reflects on a year of connection, growth, and service that reshaped how she views the profession. She says board service showed her that pathology extends far beyond the microscope, pointing to programs like CTest and Treat, that deliver free cancer screenings and diagnostic care to underserved communities. The foundation is encouraging residents and early career pathologists to apply and help lead initiatives that invest in leadership development, global training, and the future of the specialty. And finally, sometimes pathology is just in the genes. Dr. Fred Fei-Fen Chen is a pathologist in private practice in Springfield, Illinois. He remembers tagging along with his father, Dr. Shang Chen, for Take Your Child to Work Day.
- Dr. Fred Fei Fan Chen
From middle school or high school, pretty much all my summer vacations, I was just shadowing one pathologist to a different pathologist. And he's kind of been pushing it on me throughout my whole life. And it just happened to turn out the way that he wanted.
- Nancy Johnson
It actually turned out better than either of them expected.
- Dr. Fred Fei Fan Chen
I was looking for jobs, I think, last year at the end of my fellowship. and then his His practice had an opening and then he wanted, he was being very like aloof whether he wants me to come or not to practice with him. But I think it was the best decision to join his practice and then to learn from him like professionally to get some mentorship.

How has working together influenced or changed your relationship with your dad?
- Dr. Fred Fei Fan Chen
I've come to appreciate his knowledge. but also have come to have my own independence in some areas that we disagree with things in pathology.
- Nancy Johnson
Do you call him Dr. Chen or Dad?
- Dr. Fred Fei Fan Chen
I just call him Dad. I think other people in our group, the staff members, yeah, they get us confused sometimes, and it's a learning experience.
- Nancy Johnson
