The FDA moves to reclassify some diagnostic tests and new research on colorectal cancer. This and more, up next. Welcome to the Path News Network Daily Edition from the College of American Pathologists. Today is Tuesday, February 3rd. I'm Brittany Riddle with the latest news. Virginia lawmakers held a hearing last week on House and Senate bills that would stop insurers from blocking in-network physicians from using any qualified lab or pathology service. Dr. Teresa Emery chairs the CAP's Payment Policy Subcommittee. She provided testimony on how delayed diagnosis can be detrimental to patients.
There was a woman who was seen by our local gynecologist in an outpatient setting. When she examined her, she saw a mass on her cervix. She was concerned about having cancer. She took a biopsy, assuming it would go across the street, but because of the insurance mandate, it was forced to have to leave the state and go to an exclusive lab. Three weeks passed. There was no diagnosis. The patient showed back up at the doctor's office, bleeding. The tumor had doubled in size. She was immediately taken to a surgery center. This is critical that this is in network. We are not outside of the network.
The CAP will keep members updated on the legislation as it progresses. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is seeking ways to improve Medicare Advantage programs. The CAP recommends several changes, including incorporating hospital-based specialties into network adequacy requirements and expanding initiatives to reduce the burden of prior authorization. The FDA is also looking for ways to improve health outcomes. The CAP submitted comments supporting the FDA's proposal to reclassify nucleic acid-based oncology tests. The reclassification is a win for cancer care by expanding access to diagnostic testing nationwide. The CAP also encouraged the FDA to consider reclassifying IHC and ISH tests.
