Moderna's mRNA flu shot hits a roadblock and words matter. One physician group draws the line at the name provider. These stories and more coming up next. This is Path News Network Daily Edition from the College of American Pathologists. I'm Nancy Johnson. It's Monday, February 16th. The Food and Drug Administration declines to review Moderna's application for what would have been the first mRNA-based flu vaccine. In a letter to the company, the FDA said the application lacked what it called an adequate and well-controlled study. In November, I interviewed the CAP's Dr. Bobbi Pritt from the Mayo Clinic about mRNA vaccines for influenza, and she said they could be game changers.
Overall, I think this is real promise that this next generation of flu vaccines could deliver stronger, more adaptable protection for the public. mRNA vaccines are relatively quick to produce compared to the kind of the traditional ones that have to be grown in eggs. So we could generate them relatively quickly. Now, it is going to take time to do all of the safety profiles and go through the various stages. So part of the regulation is going to stay the same, but our ability to produce these new vaccines will definitely be sped up with this technology.
Federal officials say the company did not follow earlier guidance on how to design its clinical trial, especially for adults 65 and older. Moderna says it believed its study met the agency's standards and is now asking for a meeting to resolve the issue. This latest move comes as regulators signal a tougher approach to vaccine approvals, raising new questions about the future of mRNA vaccines in the United States. What we call pathologists and other physicians is important, and the American College of Physicians says provider is the wrong name. In a new ethics paper published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the group argues that lumping physicians under the blanket term diminishes their training, responsibilities, and ethical obligations. ACP maintains the word provider reduces medicine to a transaction and fails to recognize patients as individuals with dignity, not just consumers. The organization recommends using terms like physician, clinician, or healthcare professional instead. Pathology residents have a new opportunity to dive into the cutting edge of medical informatics with a CAP Foundation Informatics Travel Award. It provides up to $1,200 to cover travel and hotel expenses for residents who attend informatics sessions at the CAP 26 annual meeting in Las Vegas in October. The application deadline is April 7th. And finally, A new podcast focused on leadership and pathology just launched from a CAP board member. Dr. Aaron Auerbach from the Joint Pathology Center is hosting a monthly series designed to give pathologists practical leadership insights.
I am so excited about the pathologist playbook, whether you're talking about communication and pathology or strategic planning or, you know, perhaps about how another organization failed or succeeded in their leadership. There are always different things that if you learn about them, they'll stick and you'll use them in your future practice.
In the first episode, Leadership by Example, Dr. Auerbach explores why effective leaders should be willing to do the same work as their teams and highlights the professional value of volunteering.

And that is from me playing guitar. I was just trying to think about how to make a podcast a little more, you know, interesting or vibrant.
