Today, building the pipeline for the next generation of lab professionals. Plus, get the tools you need to reduce stress on the job and enhance your well-being. Coming up on the PATH News Network. This is the PATH News Network Daily Edition, powered by the College of American Pathologists. I'm Dafna Farkas. It's Wednesday, July 30th. Here are the latest headlines. High school students are stepping into the lab. thanks to Mayo Clinic's hands-on Lab Explorers program. CAP Today reports that the program is helping build a future pipeline of lab professionals by sparking early interest in pathology and laboratory medicine. With demand growing for the program, this is a promising model for strengthening the workforce. Read the full article using the link in the show notes. Also on the future of pathology, CAP inspector team leaders can now invite a resident to join their next inspection. Trainees will gain real-world insight into accreditation, clear responsibilities and professional teamwork. Inspectors can update their availability in my profile on CAP.org to get started. Link in the show notes. In case you missed it, no more surprise lab inspections. Labs accredited by the CAP and operating in Joint Commission hospitals now get up to 14 days notice before inspections. According to CAP President Dr. Donald Karcher, This change helps labs prepare without compromising compliance, making inspections smoother, and supporting patient care. Go to the link in the show notes to learn more on how this update reflects the real-world needs of lab operations. And finally, looking to take care of your mental well-being while learning the latest in pathology? The CAP is focusing on the entire pathologist's experience with wellness at CAP25, creating a positive, engaging, and inclusive experience. To learn more about wellness at CAP25, we're joined now by Dr. Marisa Saint Martin, co-chair of the CAP's Wellness Project Team, a group focused on providing wellness resources for members.

  • Dr. Marisa Saint Martin

We continue to see burnout harboring about 40 percent among pathologists, so statistics vary from study to study, but it's about 40 percent, which is pretty significant when you think about the impact that pathologists have on patient diagnosis and patient healing.

  • Dafna Farkas

What can members do to take care of themselves and avoid burnout?

  • Dr. Marisa Saint Martin

Pathologists can tap into different resources and materials at our cap.org wellness resource topic. In there, there are different podcast articles resources in which they can learn about burnout and do more. And we continue to improve it. We're actually revamping it right now and trying to make it a little bit more current.

  • Dafna Farkas

And why is wellness such a significant part of this year's CAP annual meeting?

  • Dr. Marisa Saint Martin

The CAP wants to become the leading organization for providing materials and strategies for pathologist to work on their own resiliency and maybe even help them bring some of those materials to their workplaces to see if their administrations would be interested in using some of the tactics and techniques that we have in our wellness resource center. The CAP has done a lot in that sense. We have a lot of support this year from leadership, which is great and very timely. We have seen actually rates of burnout in general decreasing in the population, and it may be because we're bringing more aware of what can be done and what is out there for people to do to, again, increase their resiliency.

  • Dafna Farkas

Can you give us some specifics on how wellness will be incorporated into CAP25?

  • Dr. Marisa Saint Martin

We will have a space, a booth. An area where people can go and decompress a little bit. It's going to be like a zen room. We're also going to have some visiting dog therapists that are going to come and give us a little bit of joy and wellness during the meeting. We will also incorporate volunteer activities who are going to be making backpacks that then will be donated to the Orlando Children's Hospitals. We'll have supplies and we're going to put them together. We are also working on having a massage therapy session, some yoga that is provided from the hotel services. And then not less important, we have two fireside chats that I hope people are able to attend. We are putting a lot of effort and we like this to be a very dynamic, very practical session. One is going to be named "Practical Strategies to Increase Resiliency." And that is on Monday at 9.30 a.m. And then we have another one on another area of wellness, which is sleep. And the title of that presentation is "Sleep or Slip? The Hidden Cost of Exhaustion in Pathology." And that one will be Sunday at 2 p.m. So we hope to have a good audience for those two fireside chats so we can have maybe additional ones next year.

  • Dafna Farkas

What part of the wellness experience are you most excited for attendees to experience? And what are you personally looking forward to?

  • Dr. Marisa Saint Martin

I'm going to try to take advantage of all of them because I like everything that is happening at CAP25 this year. And we never had all this variety of resources available to us during the meeting. So I think I want to take advantage of all of them. If I have to be very, very honest, I think the fireside chats are going to be really great. So I'm excited for those. The therapy dogs one, because I'm a very known, I guess, dog person. I even wrote a book on wellness and dogs. So that one I'm definitely excited about. But of course, all of the other ones, volunteer activities are always great because you feel like you are not only helping someone else, but then in doing that, you're helping yourself. So a lot of the activities here are very exciting to me, and I hope people do take advantage of going to them so then we can bring them again the following year.
