John 11:1-6 — "Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick." Jesus heard, and he stayed where he was two more days. Why would love wait?

⛪ Preached at Pilgrim Baptist Church • Cookeville, TN • September 6, 2026.

This message addresses one of the most searched and personal struggles in the Christian life: why does God make us wait? If you've prayed and heard nothing, if you've wondered whether unanswered prayer means God has stopped loving you, this expository sermon through John 11:1-6 was preached for exactly that ache.

When word reached Jesus that Lazarus was sick, he didn't run. He stayed two more days in the same place — and the text says he stayed "therefore" he loved them, not "but" he loved them. This sermon walks through what that one word means for anyone waiting on God right now: that his delay is not the absence of his love, but the shape it sometimes takes.

Drawing on Isaiah 30's picture of Israel refusing to "hold their horses" and trust the Lord's timing, this verse-by-verse message through John 11 makes the case that God's waiting was never neglect — it was always making room for something greater than what was asked for.

This sermon walks through John 11:1-6, explaining:

- Why John interrupts the Lazarus story to remind readers of Mary's worship first

- Why heaven ranks worship above miracles

- The tender weight of the sisters' words: "he whom thou lovest is sick"

- What the word "unto" in verse 4 actually promises — and what it doesn't

- Why the Bible says "therefore" and not "but" in verse 6

- Isaiah 30 and the command to "hold your horses" and trust the Lord's timing

- Why comfort was never meant to rest in how well you love Jesus, but in how well he loves you

- Why Mary is remembered for her posture at Jesus' feet, not for the miracle she witnessed
