John 8:31-36 • Jesus offered freedom to men who were completely certain they were already free. The hardest conversation you'll ever have is with someone who doesn't know they need help.

When the CIA built their headquarters in 1961, the director personally insisted John 8:32 be etched in stone in the lobby. An intelligence agency built on covert operations and state secrets — using Jesus's words about freedom as their motto. But they put verse 32 on the wall. Verse 31 didn't make the wall. The condition was left off. And that's not just the CIA's problem. That is every human heart's default setting.

This sermon walks slowly through John 8:31-36 — from the word "continue" that the whole passage hinges on, through the self-deception of Pharisees who couldn't see their own chains, to the declaration that the Son abideth ever. Real freedom isn't a circumstance that's been changed. It's a nature that's been made new.
