Description
Proverbs 3:11-12 • How can the hand that feels like it's crushing you be the same hand that loves you? Why does God allow pain when He claims to love us?
⛪ Preached at Pilgrim Baptist Church • Cookeville, TN • January 11, 2026.
📚 Part of our verse-by-verse expository series through Proverbs 3
We experience pain that medicine can't touch—broken plans, aches of the soul. We ask God, "Why does this hurt so much if You love me?" Solomon doesn't ease into this truth—he confronts us with it: "For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth" (Proverbs 3:12).
This is jarring. We just read promises of peace and favor, then suddenly: chastening, correction, intentional pain. But here's the radical truth: God's correction isn't the absence of His love—it's the evidence of His love.
This exposition of Proverbs 3:11-12 examines why God allows suffering, how to respond without despising or growing weary, and the profound theology of Christ learning obedience through suffering.
This sermon walks through Proverbs 3:11-12, Proverbs 13:24, 2 Corinthians 12, Hebrews 5, and Romans 8-11, explaining:
• Why chastening is intentional and intentionally painful
• The difference between despising correction and growing weary of it
• Why we don't escape chastening by being "good enough"
• Different sources of suffering (Paul's thorn, persecution, trials, broken world)
• How God uses Satan's hostility as a tool for our sanctification
• Why we shouldn't compare our chastening to the wicked prospering (Psalm 73)
• The profound theology: Christ learned obedience through suffering (Hebrews 5:8)
• How Jesus as 100% God and 100% man experienced testing we experience
• Parenting application: Correction now prevents destruction later
