Description
Proverbs 8:22-31 β Is Proverbs 8 about Jesus? Wisdom was there before creation, and she delighted in you before the world began.
βͺ Preached at Pilgrim Baptist Church β’ Cookeville, TN β’ September 27, 2026.
This expository preaching message through Proverbs 8:22-31 answers the question every wise man asks before he follows wisdom: who are you, and how long have you been saying this? Wisdom answers from before the beginning. She was possessed by the LORD before his works of old, she was there when he hung the heavens and drew the circle of the sea, and she was daily his delight. If you have wondered whether Proverbs 8 points to Christ, this sermon connects wisdom to the Word of John 1:1-3 and to the wisdom of God in Paul's letters.
But this is not only a lesson about creation. Verse 31 says her delights were with the sons of men, and that is the turn that changes everything. Wisdom looked down the road and saw every fence we would break, every wandering step, every rebellion, and she still delighted in us. If you have ever wondered whether God could love someone like you, this message shows that God loved you before he ever called you.
Along the way, Pastor Fortunato takes us through Job 38 and 40 ("How old are you, buddy?"), Psalm 90, and 1 Peter 1:10-12, showing why the oldest voice is the only one worth trusting, and why the newest idea came out of the dust while wisdom was there before the dust.
This sermon walks through Proverbs 8:22-31, explaining:
- What "the LORD possessed me" means, and why God never went looking for wisdom
- Why wisdom "brought forth" is like a man stepping out on his porch at daybreak
- How Moses in Psalm 90 uses the same words wisdom uses in Proverbs 8
- Why we do not need a fresher idea, a newer book, or a latest guru
- What the round pen, the clouds, the springs, and the sea's decree show about God's wisdom
- What Job 38:21 and Job 40:4 teach about humility before God
- Why the prophets searched and the angels desire to look into the gospel (1 Peter 1:10-12)
- How Solomon and John stand at the same beginning, and why wisdom was never company in God's house
- Why verse 31 shows God's delight in people who would stray, and why wisdom cries at the gate
