Description
John 7:1-9 • What do you do when your own family questions whether God can use you? When they package their unbelief as advice and pressure you to prove yourself to the world?
⛪ Preached at Pilgrim Baptist Church • Cookeville, TN • January 11, 2026.
📚 Part of our verse-by-verse expository series through the Gospel of John
Jesus's own brothers didn't believe in him. They wanted him to go public, seek fame, "go viral" and show the world who he was. But their advice was really mockery packaged as concern. They were selling him the most addictive drug: recognition, celebrity status, and fame. Jesus refused the dose. This expository sermon walks through John 7:1-9 and connects the Feast of Tabernacles prophecy to reveal why Jesus waited on his Father's timing rather than responding to family pressure and worldly expectations.
This verse-by-verse exposition explains:
• Why Jesus's brothers sent him toward danger disguised as opportunity
• The Feast of Tabernacles and Christ's first/second coming (Leviticus 23)
• Understanding the church age gap between spring and fall feasts
• How unbelief causes people to mock what they don't understand
• The most addictive drug in the world: fame, recognition, and celebrity status
• Why salvation is personal, not hereditary (even in the best Christian homes)
• Strategic retreat versus cowardice: when to flee persecution (Matthew 10)
• Why the world hates Christ and will hate believers who testify against it
• The danger of living for the crowd's applause instead of God's approval
• Waiting for God's signal versus moving on the crowd's timeline
