Right, they fall down a Reddit rabbit hole or they ask AI. They might actually start with Concept C because it's the most interesting and then work backward to A only when they get stuck.

Yeah. The underlying mechanics of how they acquire information have completely inverted. They jump between diverse sources. They rely really heavily on peer-to-peer online communities. And they only return to the foundational theory when they encounter a practical problem they can't solve.

So the institution hasn't become useless, but it has been demoted in a way. It is now merely one node in a much larger, much faster digital learning ecosystem.

But I mean, I have to push back a little on how we frame this, though, because if a 19-year-old has this incredible self-directed access and they're pulling from all these different nodes, doesn't that mean they are actually more educated?

Well, because having infinite access to information does not equate to having structured, synthesized knowledge. The mismatch that Van Kallenberg highlights isn't about the volume of facts available to the student. It is a fundamental clash of species. speeds.

Well, they warned that general-purpose generative AI can dramatically improve a student's immediate output. You know, the essay looks great, the code runs perfectly, without creating any lasting neural pathways or actual learning.

Precisely. To encode a memory, the human brain requires struggle. It requires the friction of not knowing, searching, failing. And finally understanding.

Well, the mistake is trying to fight AI on its own terms. If a teacher tries to compete on who can provide the fastest or most accurate answer, I mean, the machine wins every time.

So the fundamental value of school has to pivot away from providing answers. The new mandate is teaching students what to do with the answers the machine gives them. Education has to become the business of teaching doubt.

Right. So when a flawlessly written, highly confident answer is generated in three seconds. Human judgment becomes the most scarce and valuable resource in the room. Teaching doubt means creating scenarios where students have to interrogate the output.

And physical schools, for all their faults, remain one of the very few environments where young people are forced to practice these complex human interactions at scale.

Because they have this massive, sprawling, horizontal knowledge. Because of digital networks, they know a little bit about platform algorithms, a bit about emerging cultural trends. They dabble in crypto. They use five different AI tools. But they comp- Completely lack the vertical knowledge, the traditional professional codes and deep localized expertise that older generations were drilled on from day one.

But that compartmentalized model makes zero intuitive sense to Gen Z. According to the data, 70% of Gen Z respondents are actively developing new skills to advance their careers at least weekly. Weekly. And even more telling. 67% are doing this upskilling entirely outside of working hours. 88% say they highly value on-the-job learning. And 86% are practically begging for active mentorship.
