Hello everyone and welcome to the concession stand here on the KB radio network I am your host Kevin Reed and welcome everyone to the review of Tom Cruise new satirical black comedy Digger yes you have to tread softly saying that but this film is directed by Alejandro G. Enratito I'm pretty sure I've said his name wrong. I apologize. He is the director of such films as Birdman and Witch Got Michael Keaton in an Academy Award nomination. The Revelant that got Leonardo DiCaprio an actual Academy Award. Can he do it again and get another actor Academy Award nomination, if not a win, with Tom Cruise with this different... performance a performance that i don't think we ever seen out of tom cruise before starting alongside of him you have riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hula, also Jesse Plemons this is a very stacked cast very good cast in a very interesting film i'm gonna say straight off the bat that this movie is probably going to be one of the most diverse of films of 2026 it is not what you think it is whatever preconceived notion you have going into digger throw it out your head it is not that but it is a uh a different film i'm not getting into spoilers i'm not going to spoil anything about the film other than performances and whatnot but i'm the story itself. I'm gonna leave that to you because I had no idea. I had no earthly idea. I've seen some reviews where you know people said it was a twist to the story and whatnot. That's all I knew going in and so I knew something was going to happen but not like that. Not like what we got in the film. Now with that being said it didn't bother me as much but I can I can pretty much bet. that a lot of the movie going audience probably are going to be thrown off by the kind of twist that this film has now with all that being said as far as my opinion i enjoyed the movie i thought it was a well-made film coming from a phenomenal filmmaker so that that didn't that didn't concern me. I knew that we were going to get a good film and we did here. The question was Tom Cruise. When they said comedy, they always promoted this as a comedy. And I'm like, okay, last time I saw Tom Cruise in a comedy was the Tropic Thunder. And that was just Tom Cruise just having fun, you know? And I loved him as Lex Grossman in that film. Just bananas crazy good. loved him in that one of the best parts of Tropic Thunder he has the second best performance in that film next to Robert Downey Jr. he was hilarious in that movie well imagine that but taken a little more serious you know it's it's comedic it's comedic but it's not over-the-top comedic and this is Tom Cruise you probably at his finest this is one of his best performances i've seen in his career i have a top five list of tom cruise performances already just baked into my head i there are five performances by tom cruise that are phenomenal in my humble opinion and in no particular order to be honest with you i'm just throwing these out there uh interview with the vampire or interview yeah interview with the vampire there was uh jerry mcguire collateral collateral is probably one for me that's the only one i would rank i will put a number behind i loved him in collateral i don't know why that in interview with the vampire oddly enough he was the villain in that in those two movies he plays a good villain he just never does it but uh yeah collateral and rayman uh those those in my five top Tom Cruise performances. Love them in those movies. Will Digger. Crack the top five? I don't know. It's too early to tell yet, but it's up there. It's definitely top 10. It's definitely top 10. And as far as the year is concerned, it's one of the best performances I've seen of the year. But it is clearly one of his best performances in years, hands down. I thought he really, really dove into this role. He really, no pun intended, He went into this role head first. and took us on a roller coaster ride he really took us on a bigger ride throughout through his performance in this movie than he has in all of the mission impossible films when he's hanging off of a plane or jumping off of a cliff and all this other stuff he he's he still managed to keep us excited and our adrenaline pumping with his performance it was so good there there's a scene in here. where there's a one take is a one take monologue that went on for about i don't know three to four minutes maybe even longer but he killed it and he had to do it wasn't just him standing behind the podium talking he was moving around going upstairs and doing all this other delivering this monologue this big big speech that he's uh presenting in front of people in this it then he He gets down on the floor. the floor there's a platform that's rotating and he's it's a it's a whole thing it's a whole thing now i don't know if they actually did it in one take on the day but it it was done so well it felt like one take i i tried to see at least when i finally realized that this is one take i tried to see where the cut would be i couldn't tell where the cut was You know, I have to watch it again to really, really soak that in. But it was phenomenal. And throughout the film, he wasn't weak at all throughout this movie. One of the best I've seen out of Tom Cruise. He was almost outdone, though. He was almost outdone by this entire cast. Riz Ahmed was great. John Goodman, he almost stole it. He was more of the comic relief of the film as the president. in this film and he was so good bro john goodman is a national treasure i love john goodman love him to death i mean he brings so much to a role no matter what it is on television uh film whatever he is so good in this movie everybody uh jesse plemmons i i enjoyed him in this movie i always thought he was a good actor i always thought he was fine you know Thank you. He's nobody like, oh, man, Jesse Plemons in this movie. I'm going to see it. I never was like that. But in this particular film, I was like, man, Jesse Plemons need his own movie. You know, the way he's the way he's in it and he's not in it long. It's like just the most supporting of supporting roles. But it was poignant. Everybody's role was poignant and important to the story that was being told. And when all of the story changes and stuff like that, it still manages to hold together in an odd way. I was expecting the wheels to fall off. I'm like, okay, this is a big turn. This is a big risk they're taking with this film. But it worked. It all worked. Like I said, if you go see it and you're just turned off by the way this movie is made and the story that's being told. I can completely understand. I won't share your sentiment, but I understand. I can see where people will be thrown off by it. But if you just open your mind to it and enjoy what you came to see, just soak in, just lock in on the performances. Because that's basically what you're watching. It's like watching a stage play. That's basically what you're... uh signing up for when you go to see digger it's a stage play and if you keep that mindset you'll be all right um the writing was great the direction was phenomenal uh the sets the set design hey man for a minute you know when the movie first starts it's kind of disjointing because you don't know what is this you know what kind of sets are these you know it looks so fake and phony and just weird but it all plays a part it all makes sense as the movie goes along i enjoyed digger i i really did i i i see that it's getting mixed reviews and all this other stuff look man i'm telling you please please ma'am please sir see for yourself don't don't worry about the critics don't worry about what people are saying go see it for yourself i think it is an enjoyable watch i enjoyed it thank you will as well digger gets a letter grade of a b plus yeah i thought it was really good my only knocks on it it was long it felt it felt like it was 20 minutes too long i think the film is just over two hours maybe two hours and 10 minutes or something like that i think they could have shaved off a good 15 20 to be safe you know it easily easily could have you know there there's a lot going on in certain scenes that you know you didn't didn't really serve the story any you know it was good that it was there but you could kind of shave that a little bit you know to keep the story flowing but aside from that aside from that it's still good it was worth it though in the end i think tom cruise will get nominated for this and that will he win But he would definitely get nominated this year for his performance as Digger. But I would like to know your thoughts on the film. If you had checked it out or you plan to check it out, let me know.
