  hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the concession stand here on the kb radio network i am your host kevin reed and this is the review of the south korean science fiction action thriller hope which is written directed and co-produced by nung ho nung hung jin i probably butchered the pronunciation, but... The film centers on a village police chief and his rookie deputy who must defend the local community from a mysterious creature after a wildfire severs all communications while local hunting parties find itself being hunted deep in the mountains. As I mentioned this is a South Korean film you you're normally fine uh at least here in the states you're fine you these type of films on netflix or something of that nature but this this particular film was released in theaters and it needed to be this is a big epic science fiction action film so it needed to be in theaters i was excited for this film uh it looked amazing in the trailers i'm like oh man and i'm a big k-drama guy well i'm not gonna say big but i'm really into it uh my daughters are big. K-Drama. They're into it. They got me hooked on all that good stuff. Especially when Squid Games came around, I was all in. Speaking of Squid Games, the young lady from Squid Games is co-starring in this film. Along with a lot of people that you didn't think would be in this type of film. And you probably watched the movie and still wonder where they were. That being Michael Fassbender, Alicia VanCander. who are who are a couple in real life married couple uh theresa russell cameron uh britton they're in this film along with south korean actors but this is a south korean led film uh as far as those other actors who you probably are more familiar with i'm not going to tell you where they are in the film you got to watch the film to find out because i was sitting there scratching my head like okay where's michael fassbender where where where's uh uh ty uh taylor russell where where are these guys you know and uh it wasn't until maybe midway through the movie i finally got it i'm like oh but you gotta watch the movie i'm not gonna spoil that for you but anywho uh let me address the elephant in the room here the big thing that i just couldn't stand about this movie was the visual effects this was some bad cgi and i mean bad this is uh i would say playstation one level graphic cgi now in some shots well most of the shots but the majority of it overall it wasn't bad but here's the thing yeah it was some horrible cgi but i didn't care that's how good the movie was. I did not care. Yes. the movie is in subtitles didn't care and that one english word was spoken did not care this movie was awesome this was an amazing amazing film uh not your typical monster movie it's not a monster movie at all we're dealing with aliens in this film and the aliens are interesting and like your typical monster movies i guess i'll label it that just to keep the trope going because it you can consider it one but it's not your conventional monster movie it's not even your conventional alien invasion type movie this is such a different perspective and once you really walk away from it and really let it soak for a second or two you would grow a greater appreciation for the film you would probably sit there and enjoy everything that you're seeing and walk away like oh it was good you know but once you let it sit for a minute you're like man this was actually pretty excellent that was an excellent excellent movie uh the performances were off the chart by everybody here i'm not going to go through their names because i will butcher them um so out of respect i'm not going to butcher their names but all of them were amazing All of the actors were great, you know? Even though there's a language barrier between me and them, I really got their motivations. I got what they were talking about. I had to read it, but I got it, you know, through their performances. I really enjoyed, in particular, the lead here, the police chief. I enjoyed his journey throughout this film. Everybody had a certain starting point in this movie where you were. you would theoretically say well typically that's what you would do in this uh situation that you're caught up in you know but once the movie starts going and you know the story and you know the reasoning behind certain things you really start to resent the humans in this movie and that's why i say this is not your conventional alien invasion monster movie you wouldn't really look at them as the villains you know and it flips on his head and they flip it in such an intelligent way i i was like wow that's that's very smart and unique you know i haven't seen anything like that uh at least that comes to mind nothing comes to mind uh right off the bat but i really really love the direction of this film this movie is two and a half hours long and it didn't feel like two and a half hours It actually went by pretty quick. The pacing was really well. I mean, you got action, big action sequence, story, big action sequence. You know, your typical, you know, pattern. But it was a lot of action. It was so much action. But so much story. You know, this film didn't suffer from, okay, we got to cut some of the story to get a lot of action. cut some of the action to kind of flush out the story you give this movie some some some real estate to work with here two and a half hours you can flush out both aspects of it and that's where that's where hollywood drops the ball you know we want to fit into these tight windows and make sure that the movie doesn't exceed two hours because we want to fit as many on the the theaters you know get enough show times that whereas you can make a lot of money because studios are greedy and so you want to cut those time periods out well this didn't have that we we were feasting on all of the joy and just when you start to think that it was way too much action going on we cut to some storytelling and just when you start to get a little tired of the storytelling we're right back into the action but there is some real good transition that takes place you know it is not just in a rough stop and then we go into this new sequence and this here it actually flows fairly well i really really enjoyed hope i and a slight spoiler alert we're set up for a sequel here and so i am super excited for a sequel if this uh is a successful film as i hope and pray that it will be uh this was awesome really really fun really uh exciting very brutal the the violence in here is brutal brutal they do not hold back on the brutality that takes place when you see somebody die here or uh see the uh aftermath of a death it is brutal and hey man i'm Like, look, if you're going to do it. do it big go big or go home baby and hope definitely did that hope gets a letter grade of a b plus yeah man if it wasn't for the cgi this would have been an a plus movie the cgi was that bad it was that bad i mean it it wasn't bad enough like man i'll never watch that again it is offensive to the eyes bad but the story is so good And what's taking place around that CGI is so intriguing. You know, the cinematography and all that there. You really, you kind of don't even pay attention to the bad CGI. But now that I mentioned it, you're probably going to pay more attention, more attention to it. But nonetheless, it's still a pretty doggone good movie.
