Speaker #0hello everyone and welcome to the concession stand here on the kb radio network i am your host kevin reeds and this is the review of season three of amazon prime's adult animated superhero show invincible and this show is based on the image comics of the same name and it follows mark grayson and his transformation into a superhero under the guidance of his father nolan aka omni-man the most powerful superhero on the planet during his transformation mark finds himself struggling between his personal life and superhero duties and is forced to prove that he could be the hero his father is unaware that there's a sinister conspiracy going on that threatens the world and will leave him questioning the true nature of his role this show is just stacked with a list talent talents uh providing their voices to these characters you have stephen young providing the voice of mark grayson sandra oh you and J.K. Simmons, who provide the voice of his parents. And I'm not about to list them all. It's a plethora of top-tier A-list just superstars that are contributing to this show and have contributed throughout this series' run. But this is season three, and if you follow the show since the beginning, and thank you for doing that, by the way, You know that Invincible Weekly became one of my favorite superhero shows ever. It's ever. I've enjoyed these last previous two seasons, I should say, immensely. I really love this show. As somebody who didn't read the comics, I didn't read the Invincible comics, so I was coming into this with fresh eyes, a new... uh, like a new kid in the candy store or however the phrase go. I don't know. I'm just happy right now. But anyway, I was super excited for season three, a little upset about season two, the way they broke it all down. I think they split it in two and it was very upsetting, very upsetting. And I think a lot of fans were upset by that. That's why season three, we got them week to week this entire season. And that's, that's great. All eight. episodes were released on prime video every thursday for your viewing pleasure and man it just wrapped up on march the 13th and what a show this was the best season of invincible for a number of reasons and i'm not gonna waste a lot of time going episode by episode scene by scene and easter it by easter egg because i don't know them all but I can't say overall with my whole chest this was an exciting show this was the best season of the show uh this show was bigger it was I don't know bigger faster stronger I mean it had all all of the elements you would want for a show that in season two as much as I enjoyed it there was some some kind of shaky moments in season two That really made you question, like, where are we going with this story? It was just sporadic storytelling. Even though the story they were telling that week was fun and exciting, funny and emotional, but it didn't really grab me like it did in the first season, you know? This season, my God, this was just a singular story. We got Mark. Mark has brought it to a different level this season. As Invincible, he's preparing for this Virtramite invasion. He's training. He's working with Cecil. His relationship with Adam Eve is growing. They've decided throughout this season to become a couple, which makes all the sense in the world. Something that, once again, Me not reading the comics don't know that they actually got together in the comics, but I was really hoping that they got together. And they did, you know, because it fits. And the emergence of his brother, Oliver, or his half-brother, we should say, Oliver, him wanting to be a superhero just like Mark and, you know, being young and naive and, you know, taking on these tasks with his brother and just, you know, typical young person way of thinking that they're unstoppable, that they're bulletproof, that they... hold all this power so nothing can kill him you know that that young way of thinking and mark trying to train him and coach him uh the way that nolan his father omni man coached him and trained him and you saw kind of a mirroring of mark and nolan something that he just i'm not going to say despise because What this show does a good job of is showing the complex nature of Mark dealing with the fact that his father was just here to rule the planet, you know, to wipe out humanity, yet that's his dad, he loves him, you know? It wasn't like his dad was this tyrant his entire life, he just turned into one. at the end of season one when he beat him to the end uh within the inch of his life but in spite of all that he still loves his dad you know but oliver on the other hand really loves his dad because he he never seen that side of uh nolan like mark did you know he didn't see this vicious villainous side of his father his father was all loving when he came around you know so it's it's it's like this is weird is a weird place that mark is in at the start of season three and you have um armstrong levy uh once again this blooming presence here the despite the fact at the end of season two we initially thought that he was dead mark killed him by smashing his head in you know beating him to death but like you any other cockroach he found the way to uh survive that attack and plays a major part in this season this um this season like i said i'm not going to go through episode per episode but i will touch in on moments throughout this season that just elevated to the top of my list of one of the best seasons of television i've ever seen I mean seriously it was that good. This show, this season of Invincible, I would put up there with the first season of X-Men 97. And I know that's saying a lot. I know that that seems like recency bias or something like that. No, I put some thought into this. I know how X-Men 97, a lot of it was nostalgic. I can honestly say that, but it was a real witty. written, real animated, well voice acted show. Super enjoyed. It was my favorite show of that year. But Invincible Season 2 had those same beats to me. It had the emotion. It had the action. It had the storytelling, the writing, and the voice acting. Everything was there. And I put it up there with X-Men 97. I'm not saying it was better. I'm just saying they were on par with one another. And that is a monster, monster achievement for this show that comes to us from Robert Kirkman, who, I mean, this dude gave us The Walking Dead. You know, the last few seasons aside of The Walking Dead, he gave us that show. He gave us that comic book, all of those characters and all of these characters. And. the dude is amazing man this was some good stuff it makes me want to read the comics but i don't want to be spoiled you know i've avoided the videos the breakdowns because they tend to dip into the future uh when reviewing and breaking down certain episodes and whatnot and i don't want to be spoiled that's how good it is i don't want i love to sit there surprised i love to sit there wondering what's next you know old school way of watching TV shows, you know before the internet came along before, you know, we had all these breakdown videos and you know people analyzing this that and a third well this could mean that in this is gonna lead to this and i like man come on man i didn't want to get spoiled even though this stuff be interesting and their presentation is really really good but i i don't and it's really for this show anything else i don't care like marvel shows and stuff like i don't care because i've read or seen most of that and i figured it out for myself and so it's not a shocker you know it wouldn't it wouldn't spoil it for me so i i don't mind it there but for this i want to be completely surprised on what's coming next and i'm super excited on what's coming next for season four but in season three and spoilers by the way yeah of course i'm gonna talk about some things that that went on this season and so if you don't want to be spoiled go watch season three of invincible on prime video then come back and listen to me talk about it so spoilers this is your last warning Um, in season three, there were a couple of moments in this season that really, really brought my emotions to a level that I was not expecting to have while watching Invincible season three. Number one, number one was the sacrifice of Rexploder. That episode, that episode alone was just. bananas and that whole yeah that whole episode is a moment to me because that's when we got the invincible invasion when we had all of these um variants of mark coming from different timelines you know thanks to um uh amstrom levy and they converged on planet earth and they were taking i mean wiping out all of the heroes uh mark was catching the blues with him you know because there was a variance of him they know his moves because they're him you know and these were the bad versions of him and they are all i mean they just tearing the planet apart and it really showcased on how vicious how truly unstoppable how quote-unquote invincible mark is you know if he was you ever to bring it to that level he would be the most unstoppable force in the universe you know he's that powerful and you had what about six or seven of them maybe more i don't i i lost count but yeah there was a lot of them that converged on earth thankfully you know with their egos and their focus being drawn elsewhere and stuff like that you know the heroes and mark where able to get the upper hand but one in particular didn't and then he did and that was rexploder and what makes his sacrifice so emotional we followed this character throughout the first two seasons on to this season and the first season he was a bit of a douche you know he was a jerk in season one but he was a lovable jerk you know what i'm saying and in season two you really started to like him and then when we get to season three when he he really changed you know he he's a different person even though he's still rex you know but he he's still a good person he he's trying to do better he's uh dating um oh my god her name escaped me oh man why is it escaped me anyway he was dating another hero well not really dating but he's just trying to court her unlike what he was doing before cheating on adam eve cheating on uh duplicate and all this other stuff or duplicate cheating on him rather and he was just a jerk back then to women and everybody to be honest with you but this time he really tried to do it the right way and the she fell in love with him and you know they actually had a true relationship and just when it looks like he got happiness, you know, he was achieving happiness. That's when this invasion started. And he just like any awesome hero, he leapt into action to the point where he was just getting demolished by this invincible variant. And he had a hole in his stomach, you know, he had nothing else to pick up and use as an explosive. And you see where he reaches into that little hole in his stomach, you know, to touch his bone. And the variant was like, well, what you gonna do? You played your last card. You have nothing else to blow up. And Rex said, well, I have one more thing, my skeleton. And you see him light it up, and he sacrificed himself, taking out that variant. And that was just like the coolest moment in the season so far. And it was touching. It was heartbreaking. And part of me was sitting there like maybe it didn't blow him up. You know, maybe it just. projectile an explosion around him or something you know i was hoping he survived but i'm like at the end of the day common sense set in he blew up he blew up man and it was a awesome awesome moment speaking of x-men 97 is it has shades of gambit the almost almost carbon copy to a degree of gambit sacrifice and you x-men 97 on ganosha when he uh uh uh blew up that uh that sentinel so it was it just and i had the emotion then and i had the emotion this time with rex boulder same thing same thing but it was it didn't come off as cheap it didn't come off as like an imitation of what they did in x-men 97 to be honest with you now i do i do know this that uh that is in the comics that you that particular scene so if anything x-men 97 ripped it off but that's just we're not going to go into the blame game and who stole what but either way they both executed it perfectly i loved it here even though we lost a really good character on the show another point in this show that i really enjoyed was the backstory of cecil you know how he came to power in this division of the government and whatnot I thought that was really cool. Loved it at the beginning of this season that it felt like the whole arc of this season was going to be Mark versus Cecil. And they had their back and forth. They had their fighting and whatnot in the first few episodes, but we moved past that fairly quickly and it was done very well. And Mark went on to a whole. another thing actually a few things this season but uh the way it was set up i thought that was going to be the whole arc of the season but it wasn't you know it but for the short time that we did get it it was an exciting introduction into season three this little riff between cecil and mark the other big thing was powerplex that story oh my god you want to talk about art That was the most heartbreaking story and the best breakdown of how a man can become a villain in one episode. In one episode. It was amazing. And that character was voiced by Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad. I thought that was one of the most heartbreaking stories. I've ever seen. Powerplex, he was at this park with his sister and his niece, I think it was. Or was it his nephew? Well, it could have been his niece. But anyway, and it was the day that Mark and Omni-Man had that big fight at the end of season one when they destroyed the city. I mean, just, well, they didn't. Omni-Man destroyed the city with Mark, you know, using Mark as a... baseball bat and a battling ram and everything else but uh all of the people that perished there two of them were power plexus sister and niece i believe it was a girl and it was so heartbreaking he tried to go the right way tried to conduct his investigation his thoughts were that mark had something to do with the fact that omni man you destroyed everybody he knew that mark didn't intentionally kill everybody there but he didn't give a full effort to stop omni man but it was it's more complicated than that we all know that but from his view he doesn't see it that way so he blames mark for their deaths and so he has power he has he has a ability to use kinetic energy and the only way it can be used if he's like hit or you know it's like it's like black panther's suit in the movies you know they use that kinetic energy with how many hits he gets he can use that same energy back on somebody well it's basically that but he can blast it at you and he gets he's working at the facility with cecil and he manages to swipe these devices that will kind of challenge or channel his energy, you know, stick them in him, these pods that he sticks in his body, and he was going to fight Mark. So they had a whole memorial service in Chicago where that incident took place and Mark was going to attend and PowerPlex, he's practicing with his wife and his son and they're, they're urging, well, his wife. is urging him on you know uh you got to get through this you got to go there and confront him and blah blah blah you know cheering him on the good wife and he goes down there and he's calling out uh invincible invisible doesn't show up but adam eve shows up they fight whatever whatever well one thing leads to another powerplex takes his wife and child hostage but we don't well we know but you invincible doesn't know that and he says if he doesn't see invincible he's going to kill him so invincible shows up come to find out that's the wife and the child he just used him as bait to get him there and he's charging up to kill invincible everything he's throwing at him yes it's hurting mark but it's not killing mark you know because he's invincible it's in the name guy uh so but as he's charged up to do uh do this like final blow on him it doesn't really work on mark it doesn't kill him i should say but it does kill his wife and child and the way the animation is done the way the voice acting is done when he turns his head because he sees the ashes of his family float past his face and he just slowly turns around and it's like oh my god you oh my god this is brutal so now on top of what he just experienced well not just but what he experienced with his sister and uh niece is is the triple fold i should say when you add on the annihilation of his family but that that was a awesome awesome story arc in the middle of this season but the one to cap it all was Mark's showdown with conquest at the end of the season for the season finale. Boy, you talk about a brutal fight. This was brutal. This fight lasted 20 minutes. It literally opened the episode. It ended in the penultimate episode with them charging at each other and they cut to black. this episode the season finale opens right at that moment and it didn't let up for 20 and i might be shortchanging for a good 20 to 30 minutes it was a bad toe and brutal i didn't think you was going to get a battle as brutal as bloody as the uh season finale of season one between mark and omni man his father because that was that was that was bad that was bad this my god conquest bro what a villain what a villain i thought we seen it all no no we didn't the conquest scared me to death no matter what mark did this dude just laughed he just he just laughed and wanted more you know it was I just can't I cannot believe they pulled it off and then to have the brutality of civilian life and that's another thing about this show that I appreciate so much I love all the Marvel shows or movies I should say well both of them movies and and and whatnot DC all that I love all that but you never really see human casualties and I'm not I'm not a masochist I'm not sitting I'm here hoping to see people get maimed and all this here. I'm just saying it gives a certain level of realism when you see that. human lives are in jeopardy and it really raises the stakes and this show does this well so well and i guess you can do it because it's animated but even so you don't see that in a lot of animated shows but this show to show how brutal the fight is and how much it affects human life on the ground you know just minding their own business the scene on the beach when conquest took mark and it's it's you know similar to what Omni-Man did to Mark in season one to use him as a battering ram of sorts against that subway train and just kill all those people on that train that still is burnt into my skull the visual of that was just brutal I was like man what what am I watching and this is amazing well they kind of I'm not topped it but came bloody close no pun intended with this super speed just battering ram didn't touch the people but this the sound barrier i guess you could say the the waves of of energy coming off of them moving so fast that just blew people into pieces on this beach and then through the city there was a part where this child and you The mother was holding hands, walking up the street, and Conquest and Mark blow by him so fast that the mother just, I don't know, just explodes or implodes. And the little boy arm gets ripped off and he's screaming. You know, this blind man walking with his CNI dog, both get just demolished by it. I mean, they really showed how brutal of a fight this is. To have Adam Eve come in and fight and... really hold her own so how much of a beast adam eve is uh against conquest and ultimately gets quote unquote killed in her efforts uh that angered mark to the point where he was holding his own against conquest for a minute with one arm and one leg and it wasn't enough of course and then adam eve gets resurrected or resurrects herself and uh almost kills conquest and mark does the rest now at this point mark has no arms it's no arms because conquest broke the other one and was like well you got nothing else to give you know he has yeah i have one more thing and he just headbutts him to death headbutts him to the point where his head just blows up and that reminded me of an old anime that i watched many moons ago uh ninja scroll and our hero did the same thing to the villain in that movie even though the villain can regenerate and he did but even in here even in this show conquest isn't technically dead thanks to cecil so you have that going forward but man this was an exciting season i enjoyed it to be honest with you watching this last episode I didn't realize this was the season finale. When I did realize it was like an hour after I was watching something or I was looking online. No, I was looking online. And, um, you're like, yeah, uh, uh, you know, somebody was giving me their thoughts on the season finale of Invincible. Like season, that was the season finale. You know, it went off like a season finale, but I was mad. You know, I didn't want, I wanted more. And when you have a show that does that. got you wanting more you struck gold in my eyes invincible season three gets a letter grade of an eight i really had no problems with this season i enjoyed all eight episodes not one episode bored me not one episode was like oh they could have kept that every episode was exciting and told a story and told a very interesting story you It had that villain of the week vibe where you got a different villain every episode, but it was still linked to the main story that was being told this season. I thought that was a smart, innovative way. I really enjoyed this season of Invincible. I want to know, how did you feel about this season of Invincible on Prime Video? Did you like it?
