  hello everyone and welcome to the concession stand here on the kb radio network i am your host kevin reed and this is the review of the new action comedy brought to us by apple tv starring ryan reynolds and kenneth brana mayday this comes to us also from the directors of Dungeons and Dragons, Game Night, so many properties. That's Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daly. And these two pairs, these guys as directors, I have quickly become admirers of their work. I love their movies. Game Day, I just randomly recently watched the game, Game Night, not Game Day. i'll mix it up the two that's the crossover uh for the sequel uh but no uh game night it was just i don't know what it is about that movie it is it's completely hilarious but at the same time it has some serious stakes and uh serious subject matter and whatnot but it was played for laughs but it was done properly it didn't become this cheesy satire If that makes any sense. It's a rarity in filmmaking these days. I'm one of the few people who actually didn't mind the vacation film with Ed Himes and Christina Applegate from a few years back. I thought it was pretty funny. You know, it wasn't to the level of National Lampoon's vacation with Chevy Chase and whatnot. But I thought it was a decent movie. It wasn't horrible. And they directed that. film in dungeons and dragon was phenomenal i i was super impressed by that and so this original concept and not really original but is original in the sense that it isn't in a known ip and in this film is set in the 80s 1987 to be exact and we have a u.s navy pilot played by ryan reynolds He is forced to eject from his plane to survive a mid-air collision while on a mission over the Soviet Union. And while he's in the Soviet wilderness behind enemy lines, he meets and befriends an ex-KGB carpenter who is played by Kenneth Branagh. And he agrees to help him escape enemy territory. And, okay, you know. I didn't initially care for, you know, watching the movie like when it was first announced because of Ryan Reynolds. And it's not that I hate Ryan Reynolds. It's just that Ryan Reynolds, either you love him or you don't. And I'm starting to get to the don't part because Ryan Reynolds can be annoying in certain movies. I love Deadpool, but. too much of ryan reynolds is not always good you know it he has a certain niche to his comedy you know the smart aleck it's the sarcasm you know that that it it plays out quick and it can get very annoying and it could just be me because i'm getting older and i'm getting kind of old and ornery i guess you could say Because this is normally my brand of comedy. I love Ryan Reynolds, you know, coming up. I love this movie. I love this style of comedy. Because, you know, that's the type of smart aleck tone that I have. It's the same thing that he does. But now, it's just getting annoying. Especially in Deadpool. Deadpool and Wolverine. As much as I enjoyed that movie, the worst part about that movie was Deadpool. you know i i don't know why because i love deadpool one deadpool two uh it was it was all right but deadpool and wolverine was kind of hit and miss with me you know i love wolverine i love the story but deadpool was annoying and it's the same thing in movies that i've seen him after that or surrounding that release so i wasn't too excited about this film You know, Kenneth Branagh. love him too i especially love him behind the camera he gave us thor he gave us belfast he gave us uh cinderella the live action cinderella and and so many other films uh throughout his a luxurious career but can they work together this is like the odd couple of odd couples it just seemed strange when i saw the trailer for it i don't know if this is gonna work you know and lo and behold i sat down and watched this movie it worked this movie was awesome i loved mayday mayday is is like the perfect summer movie ironically for the last quote unquote um official weekend of summer movie season we get this movie and not in the theater but we get it on Apple TV. But this was a popcorn sit back and enjoy movie. It had action, it had fighting, it had story, it had emotion. You know, it had some really good acting. And a really good story at the bottom of it. You know, underlining about, you know, the differences with culture and whatnot. It touched in on all of that as well. This was a really good movie. really good you know great no good and that's all you can ask for here's the shocker ryan reynolds didn't bother me in the movie i didn't have a problem now was his smart alec uh signature humor in it yeah because that's who he is he can't do a movie without that but it didn't bother me in here but he wasn't really the star of this movie it was kenneth brana he stole this movie kenneth brana was awesome in this film he was funnier than ryan reynolds he had a better story a better arc uh the action sequences was all him ryan reynolds was just being dragged along it was all uh kenneth brana and kenneth brana is 65 years though. and he's doing all these stunts and not granted i know that they used a lot of stuntmen and doubles and what i'm not a i'm not an idiot but for the close-up scenes and stuff like that he was moving around man i was like man go ahead on kenny do your thing he really stole this movie this is really his story you know uh but at the end of the day the real stars of this movie are goldstein and uh daily the directors of this film they directed the piss out of this movie my god it was in their bag for this film this had some of the most beautiful cinematography some of the uh best pacing in an action comedy film this was a kind of an homage to midnight run you know from back in the 80s i think that came out in 87 if i'm not mistaken all around that time oh it could have been in the 90s i don't know but either way it was a throwback to midnight run which is a classic and now is it up there to the quality of midnight run absolutely not but it's a clear homage to that film and this this movie was close to being perfect it was very close they got to the the final lap and they kind of slowed down every the movie slowed down at the wrong time and it almost took me out the movie almost took me out uh the ending kind of saved it you know once it kind of picked back up but when it when it hit the brakes, it hit. the breaks it it was a 10 to 15 minute period in the start of the third act that would just make you pick up your phone and start playing the game you know it it was it was that slow but up to that point it was fast paced it was boom boom boom boom boom all the way until we got to the third act where we were about to get to our climax and then it slowed up And then finally, once we got to the very end of the movie, I'll say the last 20 minutes of the movie, it picked up and it went back to the boom, So that was the only thing that I take away from this film as being negative. It was almost perfect, you know, by the standards of this kind of film. Not saying it's perfect. It would have been perfect up there with the Godfather or Citizen Kane. I'm just saying. For an action comedy film, it was almost perfect. But all in all, it was very enjoyable to watch. I'm shocked on how much I enjoyed this movie. Did not think I was going to have this much of a good time with it. I was confident that the directors would deliver a competent film. Because like I said, I've enjoyed all of their films up to now. I was confident that... the film will look great and and and feel great because it's apple tv plus you know apple tv has given us some great content i think out of all the streaming services apple tv is probably the best probably the best just think about all the content that you've received from apple tv you know ted lasso and kate fears and the presumed innocence and coda which won academy award and all these films that have come out of apple tv and now with this they give you some awesome quality some big budget film uh f1 from last year apple tv so it's a lot of content that has come out of this uh screaming service that would rival big hollywood studios you know i'm i'm truly impressed man you gotta tip your hat to apple they are not afraid to spend a pretty penny on their films and tv shows because this movie it looked like i don't know what the budget was for this film but it looked like a 200 million dollar movie on screen now it could have been far cheaper than that and if that's the case you really gotta tip your hat to the filmmakers for making this movie look as good as it did it looked like it was in 1987 everything looked 87 the visual effects were uh uh phenomenal i mean like i said it was almost perfect except for that pacing issue towards the end of the movie that's why i'ma give mayday a letter grade of an a minus yeah i'm shocked shocked that i enjoyed this movie this much had no business being as good as it was but i'm so glad that it was but i would like to know did you check out mayday and what were your feelings walking away from it uh subscribe to the kbradionetwork.com website where you can be notified of new episodes dropping on you that site as well as previous episodes you can go back and listen to don't forget about youtube subscribe to the kb radio network channel and like this video while you're there don't forget about the five stars the reviews and sharing this show if you're listening on apple podcast spotify iheart radio wherever you are currently listening to the concession stand here on the kb radio network everybody thank you for joining me for this review of mayday want you all to know that i love you continue to love everyone and until we speak again you all be blessed
