  hello everyone and welcome to the concession stand here on the kb radio network i am your host kevin reed and welcome to the review of the new survival horror film resident evil which stars austin abrams as a medical courier who must fight through a viral outbreak of infected monsters in raccoon city during a delivery uh austin abrams if you watched weapons you know him as the uh the junkie in that film he was also in wolves uh upcoming he's gonna be in that film whale fall where he plays i guess a version of jonah uh who gets swallowed up by a whale and i don't know what it is hollywood got it out for austin abrams in wolves he got hit by a car in uh weapons he got possessed in this movie he's fighting off these uh uh this this outbreak of infected monsters and whatnot and then we get to see him get swallowed up by a whale it's just something he just he just looks like a person who needs to be tortured i guess i don't know But he plays it. so well uh but he re-teams with his weapons director zach crager who gives us this at latest adaptation of resident evil uh zach crager man i would just tell you straight up he is hands down currently my favorite horror director not because he gives us the best horror movies you know uh there are better horror movies that have come out around this time but he's consistent you know barbarian was phenomenal weapons was phenomenal and i'm proud to announce that resident evil was phenomenal this was the resident evil this this is what resident evil needs to be all due respect to mila joe jodovich for the 50 resident evils that she was a part of but those those movies aside from the first one and maybe i want to say the fourth one i i think that was the one i kind of liked too aside from them too those movies were what they were you know you took it for what it was but if you're a fan of the video game of this property i think this is right up your alley now this isn't a direct adaptation of the video game you know uh full disclosure i i'm not a big resident evil game guy i've played it you know in the past i i know enough about it to know enough about it you know i know about the umbrella uh uh corporation i know about uh leon kennedy i I know about Lady D. I know about Raccoon City. I know... the basics but i i've never you know really dove into the game i'm not a big horror video game guy i i like them for what they are i'll play them but as far as going nuts and bananas over them i'm i'm not there but i do know enough to know that those miler jolevich films weren't they didn't they didn't capture the game's essence i'm all for you changing up things you know i i get it i get that when you transfer mediums you're gonna you're gonna have some changes you know that's fine but it just went a pure action no horror you know it it it lost the plot whereas we are in this version the 2026 version yeah it's not directly based off of the games or any of the games that i know of like i said i'm not a aficionado when it comes to the games but i don't think it's based off any uh particular game but yet and still it feels like resident evil the way this film was shot by zach crager was i mean it felt like it was in the video game you had pov shots you had uh just the darkness him moving through the darkness and I remember playing the game and having to do that, walking down these corridors and days like that, only have the light from your flashlight and things of that nature to see around corners and things jump out at you, you're not expecting. this film captures it perfectly the jump scares in this movie are some of the best jump scares i've seen on film in a mighty long time it takes a lot because i'm a i'm a big horror guy i've been watching horror films my entire life enjoy them and i'm kind of desensitized to a degree when it comes to jump scares and things of that nature but when when the movie can is able to actually get me to be like startle me you know that get me to jump i gotta tip my hat to it in this film did it i want to say at least three times three times sitting in the theater i jumped it was it was so unexpected because normally in in movies and especially in horror films they're beats and if you know the beats and you you know watch enough films you you know when it's coming you know it's normally in three possibly four beats boom and then something will come out you know jump at you and it doesn't scare you because you know it's coming you know the jump scares are coming in resident evil you know they're coming but it is so offbeat that you don't know when you don't know the precise moment And just when you, you know, you tense up for it, like, here it comes. Oh, it's not cool. Those kind of, that's the ones I'm talking about. Those just catch you off guard scares. This movie has plenty of that. Another thing it has plenty of that I wasn't expecting was comedy. And not forced humor. You get what I'm, not these corny jokes. Not humor like that. but organic humor that goes with the story that that that we're following this character of brian who was played by austin abrams uh it was his reaction to the madness that was going on around him that that that was funny you know certain little things happened that was funny naturally funny you know even though you're in this tense scary frightening horrifying situation you know and you got to sit back and think like how would you react you know i probably would do the same thing i will probably have a chuckle like you can't believe it like this ain't real there's no way that didn't just happen and that's how he's kind of trying to function through this madness that he's going through this is one of the better video game adaptations ever ever ever and the reason i say that it felt like a actual video game there are levels that you go through in this film just like you go through levels or boards or well however uh in a video game it's the same feeling brian the character of brian starts off at some point a and we go all the way to z you know he goes through all 26 of the apple bed every step of the way and we follow him every step of the way i think austin abrams if i'm not mistaken he's in every single shot in this film maybe two or three like cutaway shots or things like that but he isn't if we are that character we are truly following that character there is no deviating away uh setting up this you know the b storyline and the c storyline over here and all No, everything is focused solely on him from a POV, just like you would in a video game. And we get some interesting shots in this film that way, because like I said earlier, you get POV shots from his vantage point. You get the terror, you know, the claustrophobic feel at points, you know, what's around the corner, all that other good stuff. You don't. No, you don't see it because you are focused on him. And that's what brings me back to Austin Abrams. This film does not work without him. You have to buy in to his performance, his character, everything about him. If you don't buy into him, the movie is going to crash and burn because this is his movie. You know, everything centers around him. Literally. in this film from the opening shot to the closing shot everything centers around him and you're either on board or you're not if you love his character you're gonna love this movie everything had to work at austin abrams i can honestly say i can't think of nobody else who can pull this off i i really in my head i'm sitting here like who else could have played this role you know we already know the chemistry between zach crager and him you know they had a great working relationship on weapons as you could tell because it was a great performance in weapons i think that's one of the most uh underrated or not not talked about performances in that movie yes you know amy madigan was phenomenal she won an academy award for that film but austin abrams was awesome in that movie he was really really good for the small part that he had uh same thing in wolves you know he was he had to go toe-to-toe with brad pitt and george clooney at the same time he was holding scenes with these two juggernauts in hollywood and held his own and that's where i first saw him that was my first time being exposed to him and i was like man this dude is this dude got it you know the movie was eh but you know he was good you know so far he's he's batting 100 with me because i I haven't seen a bad performance with him. I was glad to see that he's this is his movie you know he gets to literally uh have a film built around him and he he did it he pulled it off this made me more excited for whale fall that comes out in a couple of months I am so happy to see I don't know what it is you know I never met the guy but I'm just so happy I feel like he's a friend of mine you know I don't know why but his performance This was great. And I bought into it 100%. The scares. Yeah, I told you about the jump scares. The jump scares were there. They were perfectly planned, perfectly planted. It was one or two that I saw come, you know, that didn't really catch me off guard. But for the majority, I'll say 80%, it got me. They really got me. The use of practical effects was the best decision they could make. because it just brought a different feel a more authentic feel to the horror of it all i only have one complaint about this just one and that's the end the ending did not quite work for me now i didn't hate the ending the end you know it wasn't like it took me out of it like oh man they almost had it no no it wasn't like that it's like i didn't hate it but i didn't love it you know it is like it's right in the middle there it's like a okay i get what i get where they were going with it but you know when you think about the totality of the film as a whole you're like really this is how the film ends it's just a weird way to end this movie and look shock value sure i guess you know but it just and i wasn't expecting i don't know man i had to see i was about to get it spoiled the whole thing i didn't be shut up while i'm ahead just know that i i it wasn't a horrible ending it wasn't bad i just didn't quite like it i'll just leave it at that but aside from that this was awesome the movie is like what an hour and 30 minutes it it feels like it it feels like 30 minutes the movie flies by when it comes on it is full steam ahead you are there is no setup there's no first act we we don't get to see our first monster until 30 minutes in and all this no no no no no you you are basically thrust right into the action you get maybe one scene in the beginning the opening scene that kind of sets up brian and that's it after that it is full steam ahead all the way literally to the last frame of this movie this movie was awesome loved it i i hope zach crager does more of of the uh resident evil films you know I know he's more of an original guy. You know, Barbarian was an original. Weapons was an original. This is his first take on an existing IP. And I was a little worried by that because... you know when it's something that you came up with something that there's more passion behind it because this is your baby you know this is something else this is you know you're you're basing this off of something else and there's already a built-in fan base behind this so there's a lot of pressure behind it too but man he knocked it out of the park resident evil gets a letter of an A-.
