Speaker #0Hello everyone and welcome to the concession stand here on the KB radio network I am your host Kevin Reed and this is the review of the latest addition to the stranger things universe stranger things tales from 85 this is an animated version of the hit series that is currently on Netflix for your viewing pleasure and this is sort of a spinoff slash sequel prequel type deal this is set in between seasons two and seasons three of stranger things proper and we continue to follow our game of 11 mike dustin lucas will and max as they confront new monsters from the upside down and unravel a paranormal mystery terrorizing their town the duffer brothers once again are uh producing this show as well as sean levy and many others but their intentions the duffer brothers intentions was to make this feel like an 80s saturday morning cartoon series and that was the whole point of this show okay i'll Bye. I'm going to tell you, I did not enjoy Stranger Things. Stranger Things Tales from 85. Now, to be honest, again, with you, I wasn't excited going into it. You know, my expectations were a tad tempered. I didn't expect these eight episodes to re-avialize the Stranger Things mythos. No, no. It It... And it didn't do it, but I wasn't expecting it to do it. We're left off from New Year's when we got our final episode of Stranger Things. Pretty diverse, you know. You got your fans that enjoyed it. You have your fans that hated it. There weren't too many in-betweens. Either you loved it or you hated it. Me, personally... I loved it. I thought it was a good ending. Left it a little ambiguous and, you know, left the door open for possibly having a return to this show down the line. It don't have to be now. And quite honestly, I hope it isn't any time in the near future. Let's give it some time to breathe, which brings me to Tales from 85. We haven't had enough time to breathe. And I think this came out at the wrong. time uh four months wasn't enough to cleanse uh cleanse our minds of stranger things you know uh even though i did appreciate the ending of the show i can point out the flaws of the show you know that final season i can point out a lot and i understand why people some people i should say uh didn't accept that ending to the show But me personally, I was satisfied. I walked away satisfied. But not to the point where, man, I want to see more Stranger Things. And especially in an animated series. This should have came out. The reason I say it's the wrong time. This should have came out between Season 2 and Season 3. It would have made more sense. I think I would have accepted it. better because things took place in this show i'm talking about tales from 85 that were never expound upon in the third season fourth season or even the fifth season there are there are adventures that took place that were never revisited i mean there was they added an entire character to this show interesting character would have been nice to have a wrong you know or mentioned going forward in in the previous seasons but you can obviously tell that this was created after everything was all said and done but adding a new character was a big risk now it did that hurt this series no because that character added a lot of A story, a lot of emotion, and it helped move the story along. Didn't have a problem with that aspect of it, but looking at it from a canon point of view, it doesn't make sense. It just doesn't make sense. Now, the story was good. I love the explanation of why we got creatures from the Upside Down in this particular moment in Hawkins. You know, because we had left off in... uh season two with 11 and she meets her sister and uh she goes off and be a punk rocker for that episode which is arguably the worst episode in uh stranger things history all that took place she closed the riff she closed it up at the end of season two so how are we gonna have this take place before we get to season 3 where when we arrived in season three none of this took you know we didn't have that and it was explains fairly well i actually bought it and that's where the innovation ended for me everything else it was bubble gum kitty and i understand this was animation and i understand what the aim was here to make it feel like an 80s saturday morning cartoon but Ah. i mean the whole stranger things mythos yes it was set in the 80s we following these kids we got the stand by me goonies vibe of it all et vibe of it all all all that was there throughout the show but but it was a lot of adult themes throughout the show that these kids had to deal with some adult situations and try to navigate through it as children And that's what made the show so enjoyable, you know, at least for me. Not this series, not the animated version. This felt, I guess the Duffers hit it. You know, I take back what I said earlier. I think they hit the nail on the head with the Saturday morning cartoon because it felt so dumbed down. And it didn't need to be. you our characters here all of our main cast they felt dumber in this show than any part of the five seasons we got in live action they were just dumb they were dumb kids and i'm look that's fine and all but i've already seen them use forms of intelligence throughout the series including season one when they were at their youngest in they were more intelligent in season one than they were in this show now speaking of the kids we got to talk about the voice cast here they didn't bring anybody back from the series nobody came back to voice their characters in this run of uh tales from 85 big mistake huge mistake now i know the kids are well they're not kids anymore they're much older now they're in their 20s so uh i get that part of it but i think you could have got at least one or two of them to kind of voice their characters so you can so they can feel like the characters that we grew not well not grew up because i was a grown man when i started watching stranger thing but followed or watched them grow up you know for these five seasons because I didn't feel it. It felt like different characters. Even though they had similarities as far as the look, they had certain tendencies that we knew that they did. You know, tics and stuff like that, or the way they dressed. Well, that falls under the look. But you get where I'm coming from. They had all those elements, but as far as their voice and emotion, I didn't feel that. It honestly felt like six different people. especially dustin out of all of them i didn't enjoy none of the voice acting here but it when it came to dustin i don't know who they chose and god bless them and i don't like bragging on actors i don't i really don't but i can't help it here he was just the person who did it was miss cass i'm not gonna say it's their fault i'm not gonna say they're a bad actor but They were wrong for his role. Now, I understand why they were cast as Dustin, whoever they may be. I didn't look up. I didn't even bother looking up the names. But whoever they may be, because they have a voice pattern that's similar to Dustin. Okay, I get that, but they didn't nail any of it. They had the same voice. Ready? Dustin was scared, happy, sad, hungry. tired it didn't matter he had the same voice there was no emotion in that voice and it drove me insane for 10 straight episodes i couldn't i couldn't it was almost in it was so insufferable i almost stopped watching it honestly i just could not deal with that voice because nothing changed i didn't know what this emotion was and still don't and they were in moment he was in moments of near death i'm talking skirt the line thin ice death and it was still the happy-go-lucky voice that he had throughout the show it was infuriating i couldn't stand and now as far as the animation being as though this is an animated series i liked it it was kind of jarring at first you know it took me a minute to you fully accept the animation style but i i will say halfway through the first episode i accepted it it's not bad i can fully acknowledge when i first started watching it it wasn't bad animation it was just weird animation i can't i'm trying to think of a show or uh animated film that i can compare it to animation style and nothing is coming to mind. That's besides the point. Overall, I think I enjoyed it. By the end, I did like it. Not love it, but liked it enough to enjoy the show. It didn't take me out of the show. Yeah, that's about it. That's all. I mean, it's really nothing to say about it. It's a bit of a disappointment, but it's not at the same time. I wasn't expecting much, and not much is what I got. nothing here to get me excited to the point where i'm like man i want some more stranger things in my life i hope they do more stuff in the stranger things universe man going forward none of that took place to make me feel that way if they do nothing else from stranger things i think i'll sleep pretty good uh at night now that's the opinion of a 47 year old man Now, do I think kids will enjoy it? I think kids will enjoy it. And that's basically who this is aimed for. It's aimed for kids. And, by God, I think they will enjoy this show. It's not an adult theme, like I said, whereas there's gore and blood and all this stuff that sometimes you got in the proper Stranger Things live-action show. But this... This is a Saturday morning cartoon style show that I think the kids will enjoy but as far as an old old, corrupting old man like myself, and I'm good. I give Stranger Things Tales from 85 a letter grade of a C. Yeah, it was, it was, meh. It is so average, it's insulting average. Average can be great depending on the material that you watch. Certain shows or movies that you see, and it gets a C. that's a great accomplishment because you going into it sometimes like man this is going to be horrible and you walk away from it like oh that was fine and that's that's basically a C and so that's great for that but for this for Stranger Things the the I mean the greatest thing since sliced bread as far as Netflix is concerned man that's it's not good it's it's time to move on and look it had a good run there's no more milk in that cow to drain i would like to know what did you think of stranger things tales from 85 on netflix leave your comment and on youtube and also subscribe to the kb radio network channel on youtube like this video as well you can also comment on apple podcast spotify i heart radio wherever you are listening to the concession stand here on the kb radio network I want to thank you for this possible last trip to the upside down with the review of Stranger Things Tales from 85. 10 episode series currently on Netflix.
