Speaker #0Hello, everyone, and welcome to Movie Goodness, where we examine life through cinema here on the KB Radio Network. I am your host, Kevin Reed, and let's dive into the world of the boys. We are going to recap the first four seasons of Prime Video's satiric. superhero television show this show has i don't know for those first four seasons really redefined the superhero genre in more ways than one and the reason that we're going over the first four seasons is because the fifth and final season of the boys is set to premiere on april the 8th on prime video And I firmly believe that it is the proper time to end the show because it was getting almost getting to the point where it had overstayed its welcome. And as good as this show is, you don't want it to burn. You know, you don't want it to jump the shark. So right before it jumps the shark, let's go ahead on and put a pin in it. And I am excited and worried. at the same time because i want it to stick the land and i want this to be a uh a epic conclusion to the story we've been following for the past what seven years if it yeah seven years and not fall victim to your typical television shows that leave you wanting and not in a good way you know leave you so disappointed and knowing that you're not going to get a conclusion or even some closure to some of these plot lines and stories that we've been following since the beginning. And so I'm hopeful that it's going to nail it in the end, but I'm also a little skeptical, you know, not because of anything the show is doing, just looking back on history. But in case you haven't watched The Boys and this is your first time and you want to dive into The Boys, But you don't want to rewatch four seasons of television. And I can somewhat understand that. But I can employ that it is worth it. It is really worth watching the boys because me talking about it is not going to do it any justice. But I'm going to do the best I can. And so I did watch the four seasons of the boys. And we're going to go over some plot points, some storylines that have. carried over all four seasons and will continue on in this upcoming fifth and final season as we prepare for that season's uh premiere and so i'm not gonna prolong the time let's dive into the boys this satirical superhero show that premiered on amazon prime video at least it was called Amazon Prime Video when it did premiere and it is based off of a comic book book series of the same name written by garrett innes and derrick robertson and it was developed for television by uh eric kripke and the show is executive produced by seth rogan yes seth rogan who's uh giving us some really good television and a lot of people don't even realize it superhero wise going all the way back to Preacher which was a a pretty decent show that was on uh amc and he also produced uh uh invincible which is also on prime video the uh animated superhero show and now well not now but here he gives us the boys as well and this show premiered on july the 26th of 2019 and back in 2019 just like uh netflix prime video dropped everything the same day so all episodes all eight episodes were dropped at the same time and so we got to experience all of season one and day one and and that's how i i got hooked to it you know now on prime video is week to week is everything is week to week now, which is fine too, which is fine too, but. Man, what a time when we got to see all of those episodes at one time. And at that time, the show was the most watched series released by Prime Video. It was that big of a juggernaut in the pop culture zeitgeist. You know, everybody was watching the boys. They couldn't believe like, wow, this is super. You got to think about it, you know. In 2019, you got Infinity Ward, you know, so we were in the height of the MCU. And to get a stark contrast to what we've gotten from Marvel and even DC, it was like, this is a superhero show. But it was widely celebrated by not only the audience, but critics alike. You know, everybody enjoyed. the show the series stars car urban uh jay quaid anthony star just to name a few but we'll go through them all as we go through the season now season one introduced us to this world of course and this story takes place in a universe where most of the superpowered individuals are recognized as superheroes but in reality they abuse their powers for personal gain you know and it automatically you know you're you're dressed into this like okay this is a quote-unquote fictional reality but that's reality just imagine if somebody had superhuman abilities like these individuals do on this show man the the grasp for power would be unbelievable look at people who don't have power now You know, I'm talking superpowers or super abilities. And look how they act trying to gain power from normal people. You know, I can only imagine if they had abilities. My God, we'll be in trouble. But the series follows the boys led by Billy Butcher, played brilliantly by Carl Urban, the great Carl Urban. Call Urban. He don't get the recognition. I think he should go all the way back, go through his filmography and look at his work. Carl Urban is not what you would consider a movie star, box office, juggernaut actor or whatever. But he you can make the argument he should be because he he is amazing in everything, no matter what the movie is. He gives his 100% effort every single rip. And for him to lead this show and be the character that he is, you know, because he's the hero of this show, but he acts more of a villain. He's more of an anti-hero type, but it's understandable. You know, when you think of his past and how they... really developed this character and how car urban plays this character is so brilliant i can't i can't cheer him on cheer him on anymore uh then the fact that he's just perfectly cast in his role uh he he has his own group of vigilantes uh looking to take down vault international and expose his corrupt superheroes uh you have uh uh huey And Huey Campbell, who is played by Jack Quaid, and he is, how do I describe Jack Quaid? Jack Quaid is like, once again, perfect casting. But, you know, the big discussion about nepo babies in Hollywood and how they're only where they're at because of their famous parents and whatnot, they don't deserve it. I really don't agree with all that because when you go through and look at all these quote-unquote nepo babies, they stand on their own. You know, watch The Pit on HBO. The Pit is full of nepo babies, but all of them are amazing. All of them can act. All of them stand on their own accord, and Jack Quaid does as well. Jack Quaid. You could make an argument it's probably better than his parents. And in case you don't know, by his name, he is the son of Dennis Quaid. And Meg Ryan is his mother. So they... You know, they are awesome in their own right, but he is standing on his own. And he is amazing as Huey Campbell. You have Les Alonzo as Mother's Milk. Tama Kappen as Frenchie. You have Karen Fuginhara as the female. A real ragtag group of individuals. This little task force known as the boys. But the show and the season starts off. in i would say epic fashion um huey is standing outside with his girlfriend they're kissing they're standing on the curve and suddenly out of the blue huey's girlfriend just suddenly spontaneously combusts at least that's what you thought at first because it was just like like the blink of an eye and then we find as the camera and they showed it in all of his bloody glory And as the camera whips around, we see a trail, like skid marks. And it's the Speedster A-Train portrayed in the show by Jesse T. Usher. And he's like the variant of the Flash. And he just blows through it. It was accidental. It was accidental that he demolished this young lady. But he kept going. It was a literal hit and run. And so... this sets up huey uh at least his hatred towards uh the seven and the seven is this group of quote-unquote superheroes that were created by vault international and the seven is led by homelander played excellent excellently by anthony star anthony star who i watched on that show it was on it was on cinemax i can't remember the name of it he played a ex-con who's uh posing as a sheriff in this small town why am i blanking on the name but anyways it is it banji i think it was banji and he he was awesome in that but man when he was cast as homelander or at least when i watched the show because I didn't read the comic book so I came to this fairly naive not fairly but completely naive and i didn't know anything about these characters so that first episode kind of blew me completely out of the water i'm like what's going on aren't they the hero especially homelander who is basically a superman variant he is just all powerful you know unstoppable indestructible but he's a villain And he's the greatest villain that you could ever put on a television screen. And the way Anthony Starr plays him is not this mustache twirling, cackle laughing, oh, I'm going to get you and your little buddies type villain. No, he is so charming and believable as a hero, but is the most despicable human being on God's green earth. He is your prototypical politician or or dare I say a preacher or pastor in your church. He is all of that. And the show does a great job of showing him in that light. And he does a great job of performing as this character. The show also opens up where we see a new recruit into the seven. And that is Annie. January, a.k.a. Starlight, who is played on this show by Aaron Moriarty. And she is great at Starlight as this naive superhero. You know, she wants to do good and only to join the seven and know that or find out that it's not all that is cut out to be and seize the world for what it is outside of her little bubble from the small town that she's from. And knowing that the world is not as kind and gentle and loving as she was taught, as she was raised up to believe. And that's pretty much a depiction for a lot of people living in this world that we think that the world is one way that we were raised to believe it. Only what we see around us in our neighborhood or at our school or just in our city and think that. That's how the world really is. And when you venture out. past city limits and you see that oh the world is different you know people act a certain way or a different way than you and and do things differently and uh there are people that are less less fortunate than you and things of that nature you know and that's why this show is unique you know this show is unique because it really turns the mirror to the viewer and forces you to see the world for what it is and see you for what you are. You know, you can see yourself in these characters. Okay, let's get into this show. Let's get into the season one. And just like I've done recaps in the past, I'm not going to go beat by beat, episode by episode, every little thing that took place, you know, every little Easter egg that's hiding. We're not going to do that. We're just going to break down some plot points. uh that happened throughout the season probably won't be in order but it it will be uh we'll we'll do our best to try to keep everything streamlined for season one season one uh it reveals that compound v creates supers they weren't born with these super abilities they were created and some of the cle uh key plot points throughout season one uh how the boys assemble we got billy butcher they he reunites with frenchie and mother's milk to go after the superheroes and they later involve the traumatized huey uh who to join the group uh this team was once formed uh we find out throughout the season that this was a sanctioned government operation, the boys. But later they disbanded and now they're getting back together in a black ops form, if you will, off the books form. They're not really working with the government. So they are doing things on their own. We find out very early that the Seven is corrupted. Homelander is a mass murderer. That episode when Homelander and Queen, what's her name, Mob? And she tries to save these people on an airplane that's about to crash. And Homelander's like, nah, can't save them. And that scene just blew me away. I did not see that coming. The fact that he let those people die. Let all those people die on that plane. He even killed one before the plane even crashed. It was brutal. It was brutal to watch, but man, that set Homelander up to be just this diabolical individual throughout this show. A-Train, we find out that he's hooked on Compound V. And our Aquaman variant, the Deep, we see that he sexually assaults Starlight once she joins the Seven. That was a very uncomfortable, very uncomfortable episode and situation that had long-lasting effects, not only on the Deep, but Starlight throughout the show, not just that season. We get the connection with Huey and Starlight in this season after Starlight joined the Seven, only to discover that the team was cruel they were corrupt and just flat-out evil and she falls in love with huey and she later sides with the boys uh giving them a little a little advantage being as though nobody in the boys with the exception of the female but nobody else have super pop and so uh it was good to have her on the team even though she was working mostly undercover uh not undercover but uh as a mold if you will uh to work against vault so she still was a part of the seven but she was working more with the boys uh compound v exposure uh the team discovers soups weren't born but created by vault with this compound and that's a secret they work to expose. A lot of these individuals believe that they... were born this way starlight believe she was born with these abilities along with many others who have this ability and it is discovered that parents were injecting themselves or their their newborn babies with this compound in hopes of them becoming a super you know a soup as they call them on the show and hopefully become a part of the seven and live better lives uh very very disturbing to hear that didn't think that would disturb me but it did uh in the climax of this season translucent who is one of vault's quote-unquote heroes he's killed by the boys uh which which is which is crazy how they did it man had him in a cage they stuck a bomb up his butt and basically blew him up and uh holander he kills uh uh one of the executives uh stillwell who is played by elizabeth shu on the show i mean oh my god disturbing the way he killed with the heat vision through her face was brutal man but uh season one ends with a twist and it was an awesome twist It was an awesome ending to that season. All throughout the first season, Butcher, who was pretty guarded with his history, with his own personal stories, we knew about his wife, and we assumed that his wife was dead. They talked about it throughout the show, that she was dead, and she worked with the government as well. so on and so forth, so forth, and believed that Homelander was the reason for this. Well, we end when Butcher finds out that his missing wife was indeed alive. And not only was she alive, you would think they would stop there. No, but she had a child. She had a son and this little tucked away home somewhere. And then it was revealed that. That wasn't Butcher's son. That is the son of Homelander. And so not only did the Homelander take his wife, they conceived a child together. You couldn't get more brutal than that. That's a fate worse than death, bro. I'm like, man, that still stings. And it's still, in my humble opinion, one of the best endings. to a season i've seen in a very long time it i i scratch my head to find a better twist to a season finale than the one we got in season one to the boys i i really i they are great don't give i'm not saying is nothing compares to it no they have had great season finales great twist in shows and movies but i mean this was just epic laughing This was amazing, man, because you look at the character of Butcher and his whole motivation throughout the whole season was finding homeland or finding a way to kill him because of what he did to his wife, only to end with him staring at his wife and with a son. So now you have a completely different motivation going in to the next season. I'm really, really. Really love this first season of The Boys. Did it affect the next three seasons that I watched? It did in a way. I did enjoy all of the seasons. I'll just put that out there now. But it was just hard to top season one. It was hard, man. So I'm not faulting the other seasons for being a little short in a lot of ways. But it was. it just started off so strong i i can't i i can't wrap my head on how how great it was and so that was season one pretty much in a nutshell let's go into season two of the boys where the story continues the conflict between the two groups you know the boys and the seven or vault if you want to go real deep at it now The boys being aided by Starlight. They continue those efforts to bring down Volt. The conflict is worsened. However, as we just mentioned, with Butcher learning that his wife is still alive, Becca, and she is being held captive by Volt with a super-powered son fathered by Homelander, we get introduced to a new character this season, Stormfront. Stormfront. who has a very sketchy past, just to put it plainly. And she joins the Seven in hopes to convince the unwitting Homelander to lead Supes into world domination. And this was the point of the show where we took it to a whole nother level. Season one was kind of contained, you know, with the two groups. warring with each other and it was basically contained between those groups now in season two we get a more global effect from vault and what's going on what's their main motivations uh going forward this was no i praise season one but this season was so well written and so well constructed to the point where it you one of the better season 2's you expect a drop off but it wasn't much of a drop off in season 2 season 2 premiered September the 4th 2020 in the midst of the pandemic or at the eve of the pandemic I must say and it dropped the first 3 episodes on that date the remaining 5 was released weekly start contrast to the first season that was dropped all at once the second season received just like the first season viewership records for prime video and it got praised for its theme storylines and performances in particular for carl urban and uh jake quaid and anthony star and the newcomer ayah cash who plays stormfront now i'm not supposed to like stormfront you know stormfront was a racist it i mean a white supremacist to the core but i love that character don't ask me why i hate it i hate the character but i love the character it all at the same time but let's go over the plot point or uh plot lines in season two uh starting with stormfront we we see her rise and fall In this season, Stormfront at one point was known as Liberty. She joins the seven bringing a racist Nazi agenda that that crazy enough gets Homelander's attention. He is this appeals to him. This new agenda or not new, but this this agenda from this off right Nazi racist. superhero and she she is revealed to be well over a hundred years old a hundred year old nazi and she's the widow of the founder of vault but with that being said homelander has found uh a mate in a sense and in stormfront was looking for a mate and she found it in homelander so they were the perfect pairing uh going forward which is a scary thought to think about with those two uh leading the way or leading the charge of these super beings in this universe by point number two you have homelander and becca's son ryan and uh throughout the season we have homelander trying to train ryan but it's just not connecting because ryan wants a father not a uh up. an instructor. So you got that toxic parenting thing and the relationship with a storm front leads to disaster, you know, because all of his attention is basically drawn to storm front at this point in time of his life. And so in the final battle, Ryan uses his power to save his mother Becker, but in doing so, he accidentally kills her and severely. main storm front i mean he almost obliterated but he he did kill his own mother in that final battle uh our third plot point throughout the season the team works with uh works from the shadows i should say to expose voight in this compound v and starlight is acting somewhat of a double agent inside the seven. Another major plot point, you have Queen. uh Maeve's leverage against Homelander after she sees that Homelander and Stormfront are gaining too much power together uh she secures some blackmail footage from the from the plane incident in the season one when they abandoned that plane and killed all those people and she's using that to force him to stop his plans and to save Butcher at the same time our other plot point for season two uh multiple characters are killed by this mysterious exploding head thing at a congressional uh hearing and the season ends to reveal that it was congresswoman victoria newman and she is the killer and revealed to be a suit at least revealed to the audience of being a soup. who has the power to blow your head off your shoulders. So the aftermath of it all, Vault's reputation takes a hit when Stormfront is discredited as a Nazi and the boys are cleared of all their charges. Huey, he takes a job working for Newman, unknowingly that she's a soup and a murderer. But he takes this job working with her. Our characters, there are little story arcs throughout the season. Butcher, he vows to raise Ryan as a good person, you know, following the death of Becker because this was her last wish. You know, in spite of what happened, that he basically killed his mom. She's still. employees butcher to raise him as his own raise him to be a good person uh homelander ends up alone and humiliated having lost his his love interests in stormfront and his own son ryan so he he took a big l in season two but he's still influential in inside of the seven because he's Homelander. Starlight and Huey, their relationship sprinting. despite the high stakes danger that took place throughout the season. And they moved towards working to take down Volt legally. This is the reason why Huey took the job working for Newman. And so this is all to take less risk, you know, working with Butcher and the boys where they probably would end up dead. doing doing the will of butcher and a train in the deep now both try to return to the seven and a train succeeds by helping leak info on stormfront uh while the deep remains on the outside looking in having left the church of the collective and so this is where we leave off in season two season two had a i mean a lot going on and a lot of internal conflict uh global conflict higher stakes yet stayed centered throughout so let's get into season three of the boys which takes place a year after the events of the previous season the season follows the boys now working for victoria newman's bureau of superhero affairs to apprehend problematic soup. having somewhat of a little peace treaty with the with it with the seven but uh the conflict resurrected once butcher and huey and the rest of the boys click reunite to investigate the truth about the apparent death of soldier boy one of vault's first american superheroes uh with the hopes. of killing Homelander for good. soldier boy is played by newcomer to the show at this point, Jensen Ackles, who we all know from supernatural. And he was on small Ville, that him as soldier boy was like money. That was money. And soldier boy is a captain American, American captain America ripoff. No, not the rapper. So, soldier boy is the complete opposite of Steve Rogers. I mean, it's about as opposite as you can get and he is brutal as well. concurrently throughout this show, we see that a Homelander's mental stability begins to deteriorate as vault attempts to restrict his power while, other seven members such as uh starlight and queen may uh assist the boys in their plots to i guess you could say bring them down in this season this season was probably my least favorite season and that's not to say that it was a bad season i had put up a high expectation on season three that it didn't meet and it was my own personal thing it was nothing against the boys period it was me that that set my standards way too high and i don't know why i set them that high for this for this season and i didn't do it for any other season but it kind of fell short in my little expectations but it was still a good season season three premiered on prime video on june the 3rd 2022 uh with the first three episodes dropping on that date and the remaining five were released weekly uh on the platform uh this season received positive reviews for his action uh social commentary visual effects and story and performances this season had five uh key plot points for me number one was soldier boy and tip v uh the boys find Soldier Boy in Russia who can beam energy that depowers Supes and Butcher and Huey take temporary compound V to fight him but it causes fatal side effects and this is where I was kind of like uh you know bouncing off the walls with this because I didn't I didn't like the fact that Huey and uh Butcher was taking the compound V it just felt kind of jumping the sharkish You know, like you couldn't they couldn't find out, find another way to continue on this story unless you gave them superpowers as well. I just didn't like that. Now, once again, if you remember me saying I didn't read the comics, so I don't know if this happened in the comics proper. And even if it did in the comics, I wouldn't have liked it. I just didn't I didn't care for that. You know, it took. some of the intrigue away from it i don't want a level playing field with these guys because the whole thing for me is normal human beings taking on these superpower beings and i want to see how they can defeat them without having powers themselves and that was that was part of the reason why season three was kind of for me you know and that was a big plot point that just I don't know just robbed me of a little joy throughout this season even though i did enjoy the season uh one of the other plot points that i did enjoy was storm uh uh stormfront suicide that that pretty much affected uh a homelander but not in the way that you think homelander uh he breaks down at that point and And then he realized he can do whatever he. And now you have a Homelander with the cuffs off. And from that moment, from that point on, man, his power just surged. And I'm not talking about his superpowers. His power within Vault and outside of Vault in the world. And it was, it was, that is a scary thought. Scary, scary thought. And we got to see it all play out. Another plot point, the big battle. in the finale in the finale you had uh the team they take on soldier boy to save ryan who has chosen to follow his father homelander and we find out that homelander is the son of soldier boy uh genetically in something he was cooked up in a laugh we find all this out in season three and so it is ryan is technically soldier boy's grandson so he chooses to follow the family business going to the family business there. In that final battle, we see a... Maeve, she loses her powers because of Soldier Boy's ability to drain you of them. But in her final ditch effort, she destroys Soldier Boy in this kamikaze sacrifice, which was pretty epic, I must say. But this doesn't kill Soldier Boy. It basically just puts him back in a comatose state. So, with him being sedated and recaptured, Homelander publicly reunites with his son, Ryan, and seeing that, I must say, it just, all I could think about was MAGA. When I looked at this scene, when one of these spectators put their hands on Ryan, which angered Homelander, and Homelander publicly executed this man. in front of hundreds of people and they all cheered and at that point you do that homelander is pretty much unstopped there's nothing you can do to stop homelander to wrap up season three uh our characters uh victoria newman she's set to become the vice president of the united states uh star light she quits the seven and she also abandoned her hero persona as well butcher he's diagnosed with a fatal illness due to his continuous uh taking of temporary v so this is how we leave off season three of the boys as i said wasn't my favorite season uh probably my least of all four so far but an enjoyable season nonetheless uh a lot a lot of story pushed forward and a lot of action in this season i think there was more action in this season than previous seasons but still didn't quite get there for me and so we move on to season four just this previous season of the boys and this season takes place six months after the events of season three uh the boys work with the cia to insert to assassinate Victoria Newman in an effort to stop her from taking over the government. Also you have Newman is closer than ever to the white house and under the, a thumb of Homelander who is consolidating his pop. If, if that makes any sense, with only months to live, butcher has lost his position as the leader of the boys, who are fed up. with all of his lies and must find a way to work with them if they want to save the world before it's too late this season is the first season that shares uh continuity with the spinoff gen v which the first season premiered right before uh season four began in 2023 whereas season four the boys premiered on Prime Video on June the 13th, 2024. With his first three episodes dropping on that date and the remaining five released weekly, as always, we were introduced to a few new characters this season. Susan Hayward, Valerie Corey, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan joined the cast this season. Another supernatural alumni as well. Susan Hayward. She joined as Sister Sage, who is the world's smartest person. And Valerie Curry was a star, not star, but firecracker in this show. Another racist who's taken a liking to Homelander. And so our plots, our plot points for season four, you have Butcher's Dark. pass and this is where we are introduced to Jeffrey Dean Morgan who plays Joe and he's basically a hallucination a manifestation in butcher's mind due to his uh condition that he's currently in dying and the effects of the compound v that he's been taking uh living with it for months so he's haunted by these visions and hallucinations not only of joe but of becca as well but he's on this crusade to pursue this deadly virus that can kill soups. And so... And he eventually begins to embrace his dark side, his dark tentacle powers. And he's on a mission to kill Victoria Newman in this season. Other Park Point, we have a Homelander who's more unhinged than ever before. He's gripping with this aging and his quest for control over Vault in the 7. He stays as a cool with Sister Sage and intellect framing starlight supporters for deaths and stroking civil unrest throughout the country. Very smart thing the show did there. Not just showcasing super speed and flight and sprint and heat vision and using intellect using. political pools and stuff like that, a different kind of power to take down somebody. I thought that was a smooth move by the show at this point. Another plot point, we have the struggles of the boys. Mother's Milk takes leadership after they pretty much voted out Butcher. And he's struggling with this because he's stressing out, man, having panic attacks, anxiety attacks. is going on uh frenchie he confronts his past uh with this new lover colin while dealing with this intense guilt that has been weighing over him meanwhile the female also known as chemical she faces her ptsd as well huey he's dealing with his uh parents and his father stroke who huey's father played by the great Simon Pegg. We have the battle between Starlight and Firecracker. Annie, she attempts to drop the Starlight persona, but is pulled into this toxic media feud because of all of these staged assaults orchestrated by Homelander and Sage and Volt. And so she's pulled back in and she gets into this feud with firecracker, who is basically the female Alex Jones, you know, that is, preaching just lies. Do you know to the masses and in the final chaos, the season ends with Homelander effectively taking control of the U S government after Victoria Newman is murdered. And he declares martial law and placing the boys on the run as the world falls to chaos. Butcher, butcher, he drives off. He he's obtained the virus. So he has that to use against Homelander and the other soups. And then in a post credit scene, the last scene shown in season four, Calhoun, who is now the president. of the united states he shows homelander where they are keeping soldier boy and so we are promised a soldier boy return in this upcoming fifth and final season and i can't wait i am excited for season five and i am i am hyped up ready to go can't see can't wait to see how this all ends uh how will they finally take down homelander because at this point just killing him won't do justice you know you he he'll be a martyr so you really gotta destroy the legacy you have to destroy the character before you can destroy the person and that's gonna be i think the biggest task for season five to kind of wrap this all up but are you excited for season five of the boys or are you sad to see it go or do you wish do you wish they'll have more seasons You know, I don't know if they're going to continue Gen V. I think they are. But I'm not 100% certain. But I would love to see a continuation of this universe in some shape, form, or fashion. But I would like to know your thoughts.
