Speaker #0Hello everyone and welcome to the concession stand here on the KB radio network. I am your host Kevin Reed and this is the review of Netflix new action thriller KB. starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, The Rip. In this film, a group of Miami cops discover a stash of millions in cash, leading to distrust as outsiders learn about the seas, making them question who to rely on. This film is written and directed by Joe Carnahan and this is, um, I think the third time it's um matt damon and ben affleck have teamed up in the film maybe fourth because they just did air about a year or so ago of course we all know goodwill hunting um uh dogma yeah i think this is the fourth if i'm wrong i'm more than certain i will be corrected online But this fourth that comes to mind. But, you know, this is a group, but a pair that kind of shocked that we only seen four films, to my knowledge, that they've come together on. Because, of course, the chemistry between those two is outstanding because they're real life friends. They've been friends their whole lives and they got together. They wrote a screenplay together that wouldn't, you know, want an Academy Award. with Goodwill Honey back in the day. So they are very successful, but it isn't like they completely went their separate ways. They got this production company together that they've been shelling out films for a while now. So it's not like they haven't worked together just in front of the camera. Oh, there was another one. There was another one. The Wrigley Scott film, oh gosh. god why why is the name escaping me it's a period film came out two years ago something about a duel i know uh uh oh man adam driver is in it i think oh man this is gonna kill me this is gonna eat me alive but anyway let me move on before i drive myself insane but yeah so that's five that's five if anything else comes to mind i'm pretty sure it's gonna ruin the show too but in any event we're here to talk about The Rip and The Rip once again coming from Joe Carhan who gave us Smoking Aces which Ben Affleck was a part of that cast NARC and Boss Level and the A-Team film adaptation and many other really good films he's a solid filmmaker in my mind you know I always look at Joe Carhan as just one of those directors that didn't get that big action movie franchise. You know, he tried with A-Team and it didn't quite get there, even though I enjoyed it. But I can acknowledge his flaws. And it has a few of them in the movie. But he hasn't had like a diehard film or you know what I'm saying? This is one of these big action franchise films. Dead he can you know cut his teeth on at one point. He was attached to do bad boys ironically enough You know to Miami cops, but that fell through because there was creative different differences between him and Will Smith And he ended up moving on that project and that's when we got bad boys for life Forgot who directed but they directed the last two in their franchise, but I hope that and wondered what could have been. Oh, The Grey. The Grey is probably his best film, at least to me. I feel The Grey was just top-notch filmmaking, man. I mean, beautifully shot, acted with Liam Neeson, probably one of Liam Neeson's best films in that renaissance that he had with the action films outside of Taken. Oh my god, I love The Grey. But he decided to kind of get back into this cop gritty crime drama action thriller with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and surrounded them with a, once again, another stacked cast, along with Affleck and Damon. You have Steven Young, Tiana Taylor, fresh off of her Golden Globe win from one battle after another. You have Sasha Kaia, who I haven't seen since The Flash, when she was Supergirl, so it was good to see her in something as well. Kyle Chandler, speaking of DC movies, you know, Kyle Chandler will be Hal Jordan and Lanterns coming up later this year. But also Scott Adkins and Scott Adkins is if you don't know who he is, he is a I hate to label actors like this. But, you know, because he's not a mainstream star, but he is in his own right. with uh what we would call when i was growing up straight to video movies or in his case straight to uh vod movies you know he's a martial artist talented martial artist but he he's also a really good actor i think very underrated as an actor well he's in this film as well playing um uh ben affleck's brother in this movie and i'm like man that's cool you know it's cool to see him in here I will say this. I really enjoyed the rip. I really didn't. I didn't think that it was going to do much. I didn't think he was going to set the world on fire and it didn't, it didn't set the world on fire. But as far as sitting down for two hours and enjoying a story, this, this had me hooked. This was a well-paced, well acted story. And I, appreciated everything about it. Yes, you have a drug seize or a money siege and you have cartels involved. You have dirty cops involved. You have a singular location detention, but there wasn't any action. There was what two shootouts in this movie one in the midway point and of course in the climax but is aside from that this was character driven. This was dialogue driven and I wasn't expecting that. I really thought this was going to be a bang, bang, shoot them up type movie. It went going in cause I knew I made it a point not to learn as much about this film before I dove into it. I wanted to be surprised, I guess you could say, and it worked out fine for me because I was not expecting a, gripping story like this you know and i think it's wrong for them to label this an action movie yeah there are elements of action in it but this isn't your standard action movie you know car chases and building buildings exploding actually let me take that back because both of those things did happen in this movie it did happen but in a realistic way well loosely i say that loosely but anyways uh matt damon who i mean i know that you got double billing here with matt damon and ben affleck of course those are the two biggest biggest stars in the film and they also produce the film as well but this is matt damon's movie and as much as i love ben affleck love him as batman i miss him as batman i know i'm gonna make a lot of people mad when i say this i think he was the best live-action adaptation of Batman that we've seen so far. And that's not to say that the other ones were bad, but I'm just saying I loved his interpretation of Batman. But anyways, he is not a better actor than Matt Damon. Matt Damon is the better actor out the two. And man, did Matt Damon carry this movie. This could have easily been a paycheck movie. This could have easily been, you know, I'm doing this with my buddy, you know, type of film, but that's not what we got. We actually got a really good performance, really good performance in Ben Affleck as well. You know, these were two different characters bouncing off of each other. Well, of course the chemistry was there between these two. That's, that's never in question. And it really helped move this story along even better because of the conflict that was set. Between the two with this money, you know, you go into this siege and thinking that is only a certain amount. And it ended up being 20 times more than what you thought. And you know that you're in 20 times more trouble because of it. And who do you trust? You can't trust anybody in the film sets it up. Well, this goes back to the writing as well from Joe Carnahan, who actually wrote a story, wrote a film that I couldn't predict. I was guessing throughout the whole film. Now, I know there's a lot of you who are listening. And thank you for listening, by the way. But I know there's a lot of you who are listening and probably was like, man, I figured it out in the first five minutes. Congratulations. You know, I've never promoted this show to say that I'm the smartest human being on earth. I'm just a movie lover. But didn't catch it. Normally, I'll catch it. Stuff like that early, but I couldn't catch it. They did a good job of hiding the real villain here, disguising certain things and making you question certain things, going back and wondering why was this said or why was this done this way? And for it to unfold the way it did, it was like, oh man, that was brilliant. Really good. I really, really love the way the story unfolded. I loved how this film was directed. Now, one thing that didn't love about the movie was the ending and the ending was fine. Nothing story wise where I was like, oh my God, this is so convenient. You know, this is so this is so movie cliche ish. It wasn't nothing like that. I really liked how the story unfolded at the end. And it went the way it was supposed to go. But it felt real Lord of the Rings type of ending. It just wouldn't end. It was so much stuff going on at the end that I was like, okay, this is where it's going to cut off. Oh, no. No, we're still going. Okay, this is where they should end it. That's perfect. What? No. No? We're still going? It was one of those days where I was really like. Okay, we're doing too much here. Now there were some moments of unrealistic that you have to suspend disbelief type stuff in their final battle, quote unquote, at the end of the film. That logically it didn't make sense and it was a little convoluted the way that it was shot. Like how did they get out of that? How did he get away? How are they running and nobody else is there? It was one of those things where it almost took me out of the movie. I'm like, look, we got too far and I'm enjoying this too much for for this movie to end like this. So it didn't quite get there. It didn't ruin the movie. So I was happy because they stopped it right at that crucial point where I was like, I'm out. But it stopped right before I got to that point. Yeah. the acting was amazing with the exception of one. And it is weird to say that because this young lady is, like I mentioned before, fresh off of winning a Golden Globe. And that is Tiana Taylor, who I love. I love Tiana Taylor. And it wasn't really her per se. I think she got some bad direction. I think, I think, she made some choices that she stuck with man i mean she she she rolled that bull until she couldn't ride it no more you know she didn't switch up at all and it was it was it was strange because we got some moments of tension that she just didn't break character you know she was still that same character we were introduced to when the movie first started and i'm like no you're You're supposed to be a little manic right now or a little thrown by the situation right now. And she didn't break that. At least she didn't emote that to me. But, you know, aside from that, it wasn't bad. And that's a nitpick. Tiana Taylor was she's decent. But out of all of the actors in this movie, she was the weakest. And it's crazy to say. Now, with that being said, I don't know what the big brouhaha about her performance in one battle or over another or after another was highly celebrated the way it was. It was a good performance, but I don't understand the awards. You know, maybe I need to watch it again, but it just it didn't scream award worthy performance for me. but fine congratulations to her though she's earned it and she deserves it yeah that woman works hard uh so no shade i'm not throwing shade at her but aside from that this movie was really good man i think it was surprising surprisingly pleasant if that makes sense for an action thriller but i think it will catch a lot of people off guard uh Going into it thinking you're going to get this bad boy style movie, but you're not getting that. This is more of a law and order episode. And I'm fine with that because I like law and order. Oh, another thing I wanted to mention that is kind of a knock in. This is just me. You know, a lot of I would say a vast majority of all of you could care less about this gripe that I'm about to give. But I can't help it. I don't know why I thought about it the entire runtime of this movie. I was, I was just sitting there wondering why was this, this, and that is simply why is this film? Well, I know why it was set in Miami. The movie is set in Miami because you had the cartel element and all that there connected to it. And I think this film is based on a, true story or actual events or something to that effect. It probably happened in Miami, so I get that. But the part that confuses me, everybody in this cast, or the vast majority of this cast, is from Boston. And not only are they really from Boston, not the characters, I'm talking about the actors, but not only are they Boston... Bostonians or whatever they call themselves, you can even hear the Boston accent when they talk. I'm like, why is this in Miami? Everybody spoke with a Boston kind of a Massachusetts accent. Everybody's from Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, of course, they're from Boston. Sasha Kaye, she's from Boston. Kyle Chandler, I believe, is from Boston. Boston I could be wrong actually actually I am no he's from he's from New York I think he's from Buffalo or something like that and now uh Tiana Teller is from New York City but but that's beside their east coast the majority of this podcast it's east coast people it's weird it was just weird to hear their Boston accents in in certain scenes it wasn't spoken like through the whole movie You know, it didn't sound like the departing. It was just at certain moments you can hear it coming out. It just felt weird and I'm like, aren't they in Miami? Wouldn't it have been easier to not learn a Miami accent? Because I don't think Miami has an actual dialect that sets it apart from everybody else. But it just felt weird and weird. Whatever it would have been easier to kind of set it in Boston But I get because of the cartel and all that not to say that there's no cartero in Boston hey, well maybe Bob. I don't know let me shut up before I get whacked But any who's other than those little gripes there the rip was was good. I Enjoyed it thought it was decent um and Netflix was the perfect place for it. I'll just put it like that. I don't think this would have did well theatrically, hence it's on Netflix. But it is a great Netflix film. The Rip, which stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, currently on Netflix, gets a letter grade of a B-. Yes, man. Really good little crime action thriller if you're into that. type of pain. I would like to know what did you think of the rip? Email the show, kbradiopodcasts at gmail.com.
