Together we discussed his life and career, from growing up in New Mexico and Arizona where he picked up his first board in the mid-80’s; being a citizen of the Yavapai-Apache Nation of Camp Verde, Arizona; growing up hearing a lot of stories from elders and relatives, which he credits for his strong interest in history which then led him to become a history teacher down the line; after completing his PhD in 2015 and spending 5 years teaching at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, moving back to Arizona with his family and settling down in Tempe, where he joined ASU’s School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies as an associate professor of history; in the following years connecting with the local skate community and getting involved in Ryan Lay’s Slow Impact events; to living his best life at 48 years of age, skating better than ever, raising his kids and wrapping up his second book focused on the lives and experiences of Yavapais and Dilzhe’e Apaches who served as U.S. Army Indian Scouts during the so-called Indian Wars of the late 19th century.
