Arian Edalat is a desalination engineer with 22 years operating membrane plants who exemplifies water entrepreneurship by transitioning from operator to founder, launching Active Membrane in 2022 after licensing UCLA technology.

What makes membranes "active"? Active Membrane applies electrically conductive coating to standard RO membranes, then sends low-voltage current through them to repel charged contaminants and prevent scale nucleation.

How does it change desalination economics? Yuma pilots eliminated pretreatment chemicals entirely while increasing recovery to 92%, with only three cleaning events versus nine for conventional membranes, delivering 32-60% lifecycle cost savings.

What's the water tech production strategy? Rather than building centralized facilities, Active Membrane developed low-capex coating machines enabling franchise-style regional production, democratizing desalination access for underserved communities under 10,000 people.
