The sudden shift from deep intimacy to hostility after a breakup is driven by a psychological process known as love-inversion hatred. Following emotional betrayal or separation, the brain transforms feelings of love into resentment to shield itself from grief.

This reactive anger functions as a psychological defense mechanism that prolongs attachment rather than resolving pain. True emotional closure occurs not through conflict, but when neutrality and indifference replace resentment.
