Description
Today on Graphic Matter, I’m speaking with Mark Bohle, a designer and artist whose practice moves between drawing, graphic design, painting and teaching.
I met Mark in Barcelona, where he’s been based for the past ten years. What I find interesting in his work is that everything seems to start from drawing. And he says it himself, drawing is really at the center of his practice. Not in a precious way, but as something very direct, almost everyday. You just start, without overthinking, without anticipating.
In this episode, we talk about drawing as a way of thinking, about tools, formats and process, and about letting go of the idea of inspiration. For Mark, and his now well-known sketchbooks, it’s really about repetition and failure.
We also talk about his collaborative work with Nam, and about editing hundreds of drawings for his books Pica Pica, published with Handshake. How do you go through that amount of material? How do you select only a few drawings? And how do you turn that into a book?
I hope you enjoy this episode!
