Description
Before runway spectacles and celebrity creative directors, fashion worked very differently. In the 19th century, dressmakers quietly crafted garments according to the wishes of their wealthy clients, admired for their skill, but rarely recognised by name.
That changed with Charles Frederick Worth. In 1858, in Paris, Worth transformed the role of the couturier. Instead of simply executing orders, he presented his own designs and invited clients to choose from his vision. With this shift, he laid the foundations of the modern fashion system.
In this episode of Les visionnaires de la mode, we explore how Worth’s revolutionary idea shaped the industry we know today: from the authority of the designer to the powerful storytelling of fashion houses later embodied by figures like John Galliano, Karl Lagerfeld and Tom Ford.
This episode is hosted by Viviana Diaz and Diana Wolter, with research and production by Julie Poirier, Emilie Krouri, Viviana Diaz, and Diana Wolter, under the academic supervision of Anne Desmarest de Jotemps.
