  Next time, the roads the gift travels on. That was last week's promise. This week, the road was sold. $12.9 billion for the warehouse, where the whole world drops off its AI models. 18 million people use it. A Chinese model was circulating back then with no name attached, on a routing platform, not on its maker's own site. Its open weights are parked in that warehouse. Free to download. For anyone. The one that has just been sold. So the road has an owner. And now what? Two other roads moved this week. One was closed by a lab's decision. The other broke on its own. On Monday the 2nd of September, an agreement was signed. On Thursday the 3rd, it was made public. The buyer is NVIDIA, the company that makes the chips. that almost all of today's AI runs on. Until now, it sold the machines. It has just bought the library. The library is Hugging Face, a company founded by three French entrepreneurs. The place where researchers and firms drop off their models, so anyone can download them and run them at home. Three million models. Eighteen million people using them. Researchers, students. engineers, most of them working on something small. The price is $12.9 billion. And let me stop there for a second, because that number has a history. The day before the signature, a major financial outlet reported $14 billion. It was close, but it was not right. The real number did not come from a rumor. It came from a filing with the American Securities Regulator. A form that has to be filed within days of a deal. A document that binds the company, unlike a press release. We have seen this movie before, two episodes ago. That filing says something else. 11.9 billion goes to shareholders, and up to 1 billion is set aside to retain the teams. Closing is expected in the first half of 2027, which is more than six months away. to competition clearances in Washington, in Brussels, and elsewhere. Regulators have not looked at this yet, which means it is not done. The buyer made a written commitment, and it deserves quoting word for word. The platform stays open to the whole ecosystem, and its own chips will not be required to work there. It is there in black and white, and it matters, because the warehouse is neutral ground. Models from every lab sit there, side by side. But who exactly will be able to check? Second signal. While one road was being sold, another one closed. Cursor is a programming tool, where the model writes code next to the developer. It is used by a very large number of professional developers, and it was bought this summer by SpaceX. Elon Musk's rocket company and OpenAI has just announced that it is cutting that tool off from its models. Cut-off date, the 12th of November 2026, roughly 10 weeks from now. The reason is public, and it is unusual. OpenAI points to its experience of contracts, signed with the buyer's other companies. This is not a technical question. This is a business falling out. The tool will keep working with four other models. But notice what just happened. One lab decided, alone, that its model would no longer pass through that door. No contract broken by a judge. No regulator consulted. One decision. One blog post. One date. And thousands of people changing tools. How many doors like that are you using without knowing? Third signal. And this one, you may have lived through it. Thursday, the 3rd of September. Late morning in the United States. ChatGPT goes down. Claude goes down. Grok, Elon Musk's assistant, goes down. Three different companies. Three separate infrastructures. All three within the same half hour. This episode is written with one of the three. Each of them confirmed it on its own status page. The durations were not the same. A few dozen minutes for the first. Around three hours for the second. An entire working morning. And here is the sentence I wanted to read you. Asked by the press. The first company gave its cause. A routing error. Their word, not mine. Routing is the internal switching. The thing that sends each request to the right server. From 743... to 8.17 in the morning, Pacific time. Why all three together? A cloud host common to all three was disrupted on the same day. Several newsrooms noticed. Not one of the companies confirmed it, so we do not know. Stepping back. In the middle of the 1950s, an American trucking man has a simple idea. He is tired of watching dock workers unload his lorries piece by piece. Instead of loading crates of every size, he puts everything in one metal box. Always exactly the same one. The box changes everything. Any truck, any crane, any ship. The owner of the vessel becomes irrelevant. The cargo travels. And it travels cheaper. And it travels far more of it. That is exactly what open-weight models did. The ones you download and run on your own machine. A standard box. The same one for everybody. It runs just about anywhere. But the container story does not end there. The ports then grew, merged, changed hands, and a handful of operators ended up holding the keys of the world. The same names. Port. after port. Prices did fall, that is true, and the number of people deciding what got through went down. Both things are true at the same time, which is why this week is hard to read. The crane maker has just bought the warehouse, and promises its cranes will stay optional. A lab closed a door, because it does not like the new owner next door, and three switchboards went down the same morning. 18 million. That is how many people, this week, changed owner without signing anything. They were not consulted, and that is not a scandal. It is simply what owning a road means. Try this week. Five minutes.
