🔥 In less than 6 minutes, find our best Marketing Tips to choose your podcast category ! 🔥

************************************************

Between the main categories and the subcategories there are more than a hundred possible options when you want to reference your podcast!

So... How to choose the right category?

⚠️ Be careful: if you list your podcast in a category that does not correspond to it at all, the platforms may totally exclude it from their catalog ⚠️

1️⃣ If possible, choose a sub-category that corresponds to the theme of your podcast. This has a double advantage:

✔️ It is more precise and your future audience will find you more easily according to their interests

✔️ You will not only be referenced in this sub-category but also in the main category!

2️⃣ Category rankings are a great opportunity for your podcast. If your show corresponds to several categories, focus on the one that is the least competitive: you will have much more chance to appear in the top of this category, to gain places in the rankings of the platforms and therefore to gain listeners and visibility! 📈

3️⃣ Take the time to think about the category when you launch your show: it will save you long weeks of waiting with the different listening platforms if you want to change it later!

We give you all the details in this new episode of TIPS!

    Tips.

Hello, and welcome to Tips, the podcast from OSHA that gives you all the key tips to launch and boost your podcast. I'm Sarah, OSHA's US Podcast Ambassador. And in this new episode of Tips, I'm going to tell you how to choose the right podcast category. Choosing the right category will help your future listeners find you more easily on the listening platforms. And just remember, any scroll is a goal. Platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Deezer have developed a system for referencing and storing podcasts by categories. Otherwise, it would be really complicated to find your way around. It would be like going to a library where the books are all arranged randomly.

  • Speaker #0

    Hello, ma'am. I... Shh!

  • Speaker #1

Please stop shouting. You're in a library.

  • Speaker #0

Okay, sorry. I'm simply looking for the almanac of podcastology.

  • Speaker #1

It's very simple. It's the 93rd book on the 12th shelf in the library, number 24.

  • Speaker #0

    Well, okay. Thanks so much.

  • Speaker #1

Just to say that without categories, it would be really disorganized. Category is podcast categories. So how many are there? So glad you asked that question, Sarah. There are 19 in all. Well, 19 main categories, at least. For example, health and fitness, music, or even business. Each of these large categories are broken into subcategories, which provide even more detailed syllabus nurse. For example, in a science category, there are many subcategories, such as astronomy, mathematics, earth science, and chemistry. Subcategories make it easier to find what we're looking for. And the platforms are listening to their users, so they're creating new categories to make their lives easier and meet their needs. For example, fiction and true crime have only just appeared as their own categories since 2019. But now, how do I choose the right category? Just know that if you list your podcast in a category that doesn't correspond to it at all, you risk being excluded completely from the platform. So be careful and don't put your children's story podcast in a sports category. Okay, that was obvious, but it needed to be said. There's no shortcut. Don't try it. Now, one tip is to be as precise as possible when choosing a subcategory. And it has a double advantage. The first being that the subcategory helps your future audience find your show more, well, precisely. And the second is that not only will you be referenced in this subcategory, but also... In the main category, for example, if you choose the subcategory investments, your show will automatically be present in the main business category. You're making the platforms do the work for you. So start from the bottom up and not the top down. You should also take into account that some categories are more competitive than others, and that can have a big impact on the growth of your podcast. If a category is popular but already has hundreds of reference podcasts, it will be hard for you to stand out. Similarly, a category with very little competition, but that's not popular at all, risks taking your podcast to a dead end. The perfect category is therefore one that corresponds to the subject of your podcast, is popular among listeners, but is also a bit niche, so it doesn't compete with too many shows. It's the perfect storm of elements. Good luck. So if your show corresponds to multiple categories. Choose the one that's the least competitive. You'll have a greater chance of appearing at the top of this category, of gaining places within the rankings on the platforms, and therefore gaining visibility and listeners. While choosing the category of your podcast is something that you have to do at your launch, just know that you can change it later. With OSHA, for example, you just have to go to the settings tab of your show to modify your category. And with OSHA, since everything is centralized, this one click means you won't have to update it on all the listening platforms. Wait, not so fast. You can change the category easily, but because the process is automated on the platform side, the change is not always instantaneous and it can take up to one month before it's applied. So to avoid wasting time and energy, take a few minutes to think about it carefully when you're creating your show. Your future you will also thank you. But wait, there's more. You can now have two categories for the price of one. That's right. Apple Podcasts and Spotify now allow you to have two categories for your podcast, boosting your SEO even more. And at Osho, we have you covered. You can now easily add a second category using our platform. Even with two categories, the technique still stays the same. Start with the subcategories. This way, your podcast will be referenced in four categories, two parent categories and two subcategories. Thus, boosting your chances to attract listeners and being discovered on the listening platforms. There you go. It's the end of this episode of Tips, and I hope that you've liked it. Please rate our podcast on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, and send us a message or leave some comments on social media. We love reading them. That's all. See you in two weeks for a new episode of Tips. Osha Originals. This show is brought to you by Osha, the all-in-one podcast hosting and marketing platform to help you grow your podcast.
