Hello and welcome to Tips, the podcast from OSHA that gives you all the key tips to launch and boost the growth of your podcast. I'm Sarah, OSHA's U.S. Podcast Ambassador, and in today's episode, I'm going to tell you how to transform an unknown listener into a loyal listener. Word of mouth is by far the best way to get your podcast off the ground. But for Jesse to recommend your show to Brad, Jesse still has to find it, want to listen to it, and like it enough to take the time to send it to him. Basically, it's a lot of steps and a lot of unknowns. And at Osho, we're not going to cross our fingers and hope that happens. So to save you from relying on sheer luck that your podcast works, we found a method to help you, and it's called the listener journey.

  • Speaker #1

Hello young adventurer, welcome to the end. The listener journey doesn't come without its dangers, but I know that you have what it takes. In order to do this, you'll need to accompany your listeners through three crucial steps.

  • Speaker #0

Crucial steps. Okay, I'll take it from here. First, notoriety. How do you get your podcast audience to spot you in a maze of podcasts? Next, activation. How do you convince your audience to start listening and press play? And finally, retention. How do you make sure that your listeners keep coming back to your podcast and not find themselves in a dead end? At each step of the listener journey, a certain percentage of your target audience abandons your show. They just weren't ready to go on that journey with you, honey. But the good news is, is that the audience that stays reaches a superior level, becoming more and more qualified. Therefore, the objective is to minimize the number of drop-offs. Good luck! Let's look at the first step of the listener journey, notoriety. It's certainly the most important step in the process because if you don't do anything to make your podcast known, you only have a tiny number of downloads. if that. So of course, to maximize the visibility of a podcast, it needs an attractive cover, a catchy title, and a well-written description. But believe me, that's not all. The first thing that you absolutely need to do before you even start with the communication plan of your podcast is to ensure that your podcast is visible everywhere. And when I say everywhere, I really mean it. all the listening platforms, Spotify, Apple Podcast, Pocket Cast, to name a few. And yes, even YouTube. Once your podcast is referenced and visible in all the right places, make sure to boost the visibility of your podcast outside the podcast ecosystem by using natural referencing. To optimize your SEO to the max, create a website dedicated to your show or even write articles on the subjects of your episodes. And if you don't have the time, the abilities, or you just don't feel like it, OSHA allows you to automatically create a website entirely dedicated to your show. And it's perfectly optimized for the natural referencing of your podcast. Booyah! Once you're really visible and within reach of your audience, or within earshot really, a new challenge presents itself. How can you convince them to press play? First answer, by teasing your audience. What better way to do that than with a trailer? When we think about it, there are a lot of similarities between movies and podcasts. So if they can release trailers to promote a movie in its world, why can't we do the same with a podcast? Oh, we can? We can! See, I told you we could. The best thing to do is then transform the trailer into a video clip that you can post on social media. In this activation stage, your social media is your most faithful ally to convince your future listeners to click that play button. There are plenty of ways to promote your podcast on social media. quotes, photos of your guests, a behind-the-scenes look, recording videos, audio extracts, the list goes on and on. Let your imagination run wild. And if you're looking for a bit of inspiration, find time to listen to episode 13 of Tips. It's a good one. The last thing to do to promote activation, make it as easy as possible to listen to your podcast by sharing a unique listening link. At OSHA, it's called SmartLink, and it's super helpful for redirecting all of your listeners to their preferred listening platform. As a reminder of the challenge of this step is to make sure your listeners come back to your podcast or make sure they want to stay and listen to all of your episodes at once. The first little trick for making your audience addicted to your podcast, seasons and playlist. In structuring your show well, you're pushing your listeners to binge your episodes. To transform someone into a regular listener, it also means notifying them as soon as a new episode is online. I've already mentioned social media, but it has a really large role to play in this particular stage. My advice? Plan your post on social media around the release of a new episode. It will help save you a lot of time and your community will be notified about your new content. Another way to inform your audience about your new episodes is by sending a newsletter to your subscribers. Most of the time, the people who subscribe to your podcast through OSHA or who give their email address on your website are your most engaged listeners. So it's a super effective way to turn them into those loyal fans that we want.

  • Speaker #1

And the journey ends here, my young adventure. Adventurer.

  • Speaker #0

I got it. Thank you. Thank you. The journey is ending here. At least this episode's journey as we've come to the end. I hope you liked it. And if you did, you know the drill. Tell some friends about it or send us a message on OSHA's social media pages. Ausha Originals.
