  I am called the muscle of providence, for I spread my fibers like a wide sail linking the upper and lower body. I arise from the spinous processes of the last six thoracic vertebrae, from all the lumbar vertebrae, and from the sacrum. I also attach to the posterior part of the iliac crest, to the last four ribs, and sometimes to the inferior angle of the scapula. From there, I travel obliquely across the back, curve around the armpit, and insert into the intertubercular groove of the humerus. My main actions are extension, adduction, and medial rotation of the arm. When the arms are fixed, I help lift the trunk. I also play a role in forced respiration. I am innervated by the thoracodorsal nerve arising from the C6 to C8 roots. In Pilates, I am challenged in the frog position on the stability chair. I work isometrically on the long box and the reformer during the triceps exercise. I contract concentrically in chest expansion on the Cadillac. I stretch in spine stretch forward on the mat.
