  Preparing for your Pilates exam without stress over six months and answering one question each day means learning to read muscles beyond their names and teaching Pilates the way Joseph Pilates intended it to be passed on. I am a discrete muscle of the shoulder, often overshadowed by more famous ones. And yet, whenever it comes to drawing the arm back, rotating it inward, stabilizing it under effort, and organizing the force between the trunk and the upper limb i am there i originate from the posterior surface of the inferior angle of the scapula i insert on to the medial lip of the intertubercular groove of the humerus near the tendon of the latissimus dorsi with which i am often compared i act in adduction medial rotation and extension of the arm I also contribute to the stability of the glenohumeral joint, especially when the arm works against resistance. I am innervated by the lower subscapular nerve arising from the C5 to C6 roots. In your Pilates practice, on the mat work, in the breaststroke or swan dive prep, I help organize the back of the shoulder and bring the arm back without compressing the neck. On the reformer, in arms pulling straps, I work with the latissimus dorsi to guide arm extension with power and precision. On the cadillac, in the lat pull or pull down, I support the connection between the scapula, the arm, and the center. On the stability chair, in swan dive prep, I help open the shoulder girdle while maintaining proper humeral organization. On the arc barrel in breaststroke preps, I participate in arm extension and thoracic. opening without losing shoulder stability. On the spine corrector in swimming, I contribute to coordinating the arm backward and stabilizing the scapula during movement.
