This muscle originates from the transverse processes of the vertebrae. It inserts onto the lamina or the spinous process of the vertebra located two levels above. Its main action is contralateral rotation of the vertebral column. It also contributes to fine spinal extension and, above all, to deep segmental stabilization between the vertebrae. It is innervated by the dorsal rami of the spinal nerves. In Pilates, this muscle is involved in all exercises where the spine must rotate with precision without losing axial elongation or deep stability. On the mat. work, the spine twist requires controlled trunk rotation while maintaining a stable pelvis and an elongated spine. On the reformer, the side twisting strongly challenges the deep spinal stabilizers to control rotation against the resistance of the springs. On the Cadillac, mermaid with rotation develops thoracic mobility while requiring extremely precise organization of the spinal stabilizing muscles. On the stability chair, rotation prone strengthens rotational control of the spine in a position where the back must remain supported and active. On the arc barrel, rotation with port de bras combines breathing, thoracic opening, and fine segmental spinal rotation.
