Meet Dr. Ifesinachi Okafor Yarwood, lecturer in sustainable futures at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Nigerian of Igbo descent, she came to maritime security by an unexpected path, from studying international relations and conflict resolution to discovering illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing at a Chatham House conference, which reshaped her PhD research on fisheries depletion and piracy in West and Central Africa. Drawing on EU funded research for UNODC on gender dynamics in maritime security, she unpacks structural barriers women face, from outdated ship infrastructure to career trade offs around promotion, relocation and family. She closes with three words for the future of women in maritime security: equitable, inclusive, bright. An episode of EnMAR Voices, a podcast on maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, funded by the European Union.
