Hello to you and welcome to this new chapter of the Keep Your Wings podcast. After learning that my boss was at odds with some of my colleagues, I found myself in a rather delicate position. It's an opportunity to ask Teo, this right-hand man, to explain this story to me. But that's not all, as I continue my romance with Fiona. Thanks to her, I understand more about the fundamental differences between Westerners and Taiwanese. Enjoy the episode. Keep your Wings Le Podcast. Chapter 6: Stand out from the crowd. I remain stunned by the bombshell that my colleague Pauline has just dropped. I can see a palpable tension in her face. Her fascial muscles are contracted. Her heavy breathing indicates too many heart blow received.

These last few days, it's the straw that broke the camel's back. Theo sent a message throwing everything at Dominique.
- Speaker #0
She exclaims I immediately made the connection with the strange phone call I had received a few minutes earlier. From now on, war is declared between Theo, Pauline and Dominique. The days that followed gave me an involuntary promotion to Dominique's second. It was now my phone ringing constantly and no longer Theo's. It was also up to me to take care of the inventory, report on the finance. The tension became such that Dominique asked me to watch my colleagues.
- Speaker #2
See if they're working well. Subtly tell him that he's supposed to be in the kitchen. If there aren't too many people, send her home. She doesn't need to work more for today.
- Speaker #0
Being absolutely not in favor of such practices, I was content simply to nod or murmur a soft OK, just in order to get me out of this mess into which I had been indirectly plunged. What had not changed, however, was the festival attendance rate. I spent most of my time pausing for the curious rather than serving the gourmet. I no longer count the number of hours I spent standing, cooking waffle dough over and over again. The smell of sugar, which I love so much, ended up disgusting me. In order to save money, I started eating the products that were prepared. Fat, then sugar, sugar, and more sugar. A cocktail that ended up killing me. My angular face was becoming more and more rounded. Every day, I came home to this waffle smell that my roommates found pleasant and so fresh, but which I ended up disgusting me more and more. My late hours, until 11pm sometimes, allow me to catch the last metro. And in very rare cases... to plan small evenings with friends or with Fiona.
- Speaker #3
Hey, how are you?
- Speaker #0
My discussions with her were often interesting. I don't really know if we were a couple, but she acted like we were, a lot of time.
- Speaker #4
I like you because you're different.
- Speaker #0
She admitted to me one evening. Different from whom and in what I retorted lying on the bed.
- Speaker #4
Well, from Taiwanese people, without a doubt.
- Speaker #0
Because they are too shy? Because they look are the same?
- Speaker #4
I think you must be referring to the students we often see in large numbers on the subway.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, among other things.
- Speaker #4
It's not entirely their fault.
- Speaker #0
She began.
- Speaker #4
You know, when I was in elementary school, we were always taught not to be different, to always stay in line. Difference is often poorly perceived in Taiwan.
- Speaker #0
Also?
- Speaker #4
For example, as children, we had specific haircuts to follow for both girls and boys. But maybe that was only in my school. From a very young age, we are heavily pushed in terms of education. Studies are very important to us. For instance, from kindergarten. We have English classes with native speakers accompanied by Taiwanese teachers. Generally, Taiwanese people have good written English and are good at listening. But in speaking, they are quite bad because there are very few foreigners to converse with. That's why they don't dare to speak English much.
- Speaker #0
And it's true. When I listen to Fiona, that most of the time, it is very complicated to get in touch with Taiwanese people. It's generally easier with girls, especially those who are fluent in the language of Shakespeare. Concretely, some are simply looking for a foreigner boyfriend. Not only because it looks good, but also because they find the whiteness of foreigners very attractive. There is a form of respect, very little hidden, from the Taiwanese towards the white people. They consider them stronger, more beautiful, taller, richer. This tendency to idealize and almost adulate foreigners is strongly felt by young Taiwanese people, especially guys. inferiority complexes coupled with jealousy ends up being born in them. and poison the relationship they could form with strangers. I only have a few Taiwanese male friends and, conversely, a gaggle of girlfriends. The few words exchanged with Taiwanese mainly concern romantic or sexual relationships.
- Speaker #5
What do you say to girls? How do you create a good conversation?
- Speaker #6
Is it easier for foreigners to meet girls?
- Speaker #5
How many girls have you already fucked?
- Speaker #0
This curiosity mixed with envy is not always a good combo during conversation because it fuels jealousy and resentment. On the other hand, among foreigners, We are not spared from the lot of remarks of all kinds either.
- Speaker #3
They are easy, the Taiwanese women, right? Asian are tighter. You should try Scout. It's the Tinder of Taiwan.
- Speaker #0
Everyone has their own side. Another interesting observation is that many Taiwanese are afraid of transgressing certain rules, sometimes instilled by fear.
- Speaker #4
There are quite a few people around me who don't drink much alcohol, or not at all. We're afraid of what could happen if we drink too much, like getting into car accidents or being assaulted. Plus, we turn red very quickly.
- Speaker #0
Fiona tells me, who doesn't mind drinking one or two glasses of wine when we eat at my place? But she's constantly on the lookout for compliance with the rules. I remember her grabbing my jaw in the MRT because I had gum in my mouth.
- Speaker #4
We can't eat here. It's forbidden. You risk getting fined.
- Speaker #0
Okay, boss. The last day of work is finally upon us, and it's not too soon. Even if the atmosphere is not yet too heavy, the absence of Dominique has a lot to do with it, the repetitive side is slowly starting to tire me. I then receive the message from the boss offering me to return to my position in December. For a period of one month during an upcoming event, I respond straight away Ok, but first we need to have a full-on conversation about work. I need to clarify some things. We then set up a meeting, a few days later, to discuss the continuation of our collaboration. However, I am too curious not to ask Theo what really happened with Dominic, given that he worked with him for a year. He promised me to send me an email to tell me the whole story. I had to wait several months to discover with amazement a 56-page story. Tao's resentment was much only by his desire to re-establish the truth and to justify this rage that he had contained for far too long.
- Speaker #3
I met my Taiwanese girlfriend in 2014 in Japan, in a Japanese language class. Eight months later, I had to return to Belgium. And shortly after, she had to go back to Taiwan. I came back for good in October.
- Speaker #0
He begins in order to contextualize the situation.
- Speaker #3
With limited savings, I needed to find a job quickly. I started looking in Tao Yuan and nearby areas. I mainly targeted places run by foreigners. Given my lack of Chinese skills, this search quickly proved fruitless. So I turned to Taipei and happened to stumble upon an even announcement featuring Dominique's brand.
- Speaker #0
Very quickly, a telephone interview was carried out and Theo perfectly matched the expectations of our respective boss.
- Speaker #3
After showing me his boots and sharing some of his ambitions, he told me he couldn't hire me immediately but would be opening a sales bond at Taipei main station starting January 2017 and wanted me as a manager. He wanted a foreigner to make it seem more authentic.
- Speaker #0
He writes, while I can't help but giggle remembering exactly having heard this sentence during my own interview. He continues,
- Speaker #3
impressed and convinced by the project I accepted this offer.
- Speaker #0
But now in December Dominique already needs him.
- Speaker #3
He secured a contract for the Taipei 101 Christmas market, which requires a lot of work hours. From December 9 to 28, I worked 225 hours without any day-offs and no breaks for food or bathroom during the day. The staff was too small and we never had time to rest. It was understandable as no one had anticipated such a crowd at the market. Later, we managed to recruit a few people for the final days, but it didn't lighten my workload. However, the salary was disappointing compared to what I expected. Mid-January arrived, but there was no bonus. I started discussing it with Pauline, who already worked for Dominique. Eventually, he explained to her via message that he had increased the overtime rate and disliked discussing such matters over the phone, preferring face-to-face. Yet, as you might have noticed, he was hardly ever around.
- Speaker #0
Theo confides to me afterward.
- Speaker #3
A few days after this news, I found the paper in the kitchen. It was a summary. of our December wages. After some quick calculations, I realized we had all been paid much less than we should have been.
- Speaker #0
Rages Theo, who I imagine must have slammed his finger with irritation on the keyboard of his computer. Theo notified Dominique, but the latter only promised him a better situation. He sends him this message.
- Speaker #2
Okay, you weren't supposed to know this yet, and keep it to yourself, but I was planning to promote you to manager for the shop We're opening in July at TPMN station. But I don't want any more overtime hours. You started out. But I don't want any more overtime hours.
- Speaker #0
Toa doesn't really believe it, but decides to steal Hope a little and struggles with Pauline and her colleague to avoid overtime. However, the pressure increases. Dominique, being very rarely present at the boot, begins to call Theo many times a day. A habit that quickly becomes annoying. Especially when Toa realizes that Dominique changes mind, like he always do.
- Speaker #3
Make waffles with strawberries? No, make them with bananas. Cut the waffles in half, don't cut them in half anymore.
- Speaker #0
Theodon continues.
- Speaker #3
We were fed up with his constant calls for trivial or impossible requests. So eventually, we didn't always answer his calls. He had this snack for calling at the only time of day when you were busy. We barely had any customers but he was a pro at calling at the only moment we did. One day he called to say things were getting out of hand at the shop.
- Speaker #2
You don't respond even though there are never any customers.
- Speaker #3
And he handed with a little
- Speaker #2
I'm the boss.
- Speaker #3
It made me smile because a week earlier I had been talking with Pauline and mentioned that Dominique was the boss just to be able to say here I'm the boss.
- Speaker #0
The rest is predictable in advance.
- Speaker #3
Between May and June, we did three events, but all were a fiasco.
- Speaker #0
Continues Theo. Tired, he decides to take a break and return to Belgium. He ends up coming back with a tourist visa this time, to see his girlfriend again. And again, due to lack of money, he's told by Dominique for the European Food Festival.
- Speaker #3
At first, I saw this event as a great opportunity. Once again, I was completely wrong.
- Speaker #0
He regrets once again. And there you have it. After this accumulation for a full year, Theo breaks down and argues with Dominique.
- Speaker #3
He retorted that... I should be grateful because he hired me even though I had become illegal with my tourist visa. I acknowledged that. Yes, indeed, few people would have hired me under those conditions. But there were many things he couldn't have done without me. So we were a good match for each other.
- Speaker #0
What was supposed to happen finally happened very shortly after the argument.
- Speaker #3
Dominique continued to make the schedule day by day, sometimes sending it at 1.13 in the morning for the next day. I was no longer on it. I sensed a demotion coming. I decided to write him a somewhat harsh email, tell him some truth and announced I would resign along with Pauline. After that, he informed me that he had called you to say not to listen to rumors about him, even though I hadn't mentioned it to anyone to avoid causing trouble.
- Speaker #0
Theo, upset and above all tired of Dominique's endless promises, decided to take revenge in his own way.
- Speaker #3
I was pretty upset by what was happening, so I decided to take the money we had in the kitchen. in total 7000 Taiwanese dollars and I decided to erase the board where I had written the new quantities of ingredients needed to make waffle dough How can I still trust Dominique and consider collaborating with him?
- Speaker #0
However for the same reason as Theo I decided to give him one more chance probably out of spite and to maintain the meeting we had set regarding our future collaboration
