Hello! Before we start today, we wanted to dedicate this episode in loving memory of the fabulous, fine, fresh and fierce Maeve Lyons. House of Gossip's number one hoglet. Thank you so much for all your support since day dot, little girly. We miss you so much. Oink, oink, bitches! We're back! We are back! It's House of Gossip after our hiatus. It's Sophie Lyons and me, Clara Kavna. Sophie,
- Speaker #1
how are you? Someone can definitely hear me next door. I'm great, how are you?
- Speaker #0
It's great to be back in the saddle with you. Saddled on some goss. We're trotting up to our trough.
- Speaker #1
I had a few people asking me when we'd be back, like fairly recently. So I feel like it's a lovely time to come back because people didn't know.
- Speaker #0
Exactly. I kind of like coming back as a surprise.
- Speaker #1
I love coming back as a surprise.
- Speaker #0
Yeah. And we, yeah, thank you so much for all your patience. We lovely, what, extended summer break.
- Speaker #1
Hiatus. But
- Speaker #0
I'm just giddy to get back gossing with you.
- Speaker #1
And may I say, you know way more bits than I do.
- Speaker #0
Well, you know, I feel, no, I don't.
- Speaker #1
You do. Your notes were very comprehensive in a great way.
- Speaker #0
I was just so eager. I'm excited to learn.
- Speaker #1
I'm excited to learn today.
- Speaker #0
We, yeah, we have actually like a mammoth amount of scandals to get through. So we're going to go through, like, we're going to do a little bit of a catch up of Goss on some of the bits that happened over the summer. Then we're going to go into like the hot topics and do a special like recommendation extravaganza eleganza. But before that, we're going to do our old favourites, J'Adore's and Chess. So, Soph's, we're going to do both this time, not just one. You go first. What would you like to do first?
- Speaker #1
I have a different issue door, but I just love that I look like a CEO in this. I'm wearing a polo neck and I'm on a black leather chair and I love it.
- Speaker #0
You're swiveling away there. Whereas I just have this lovely New York City skyline, Times Square, IKEA favourite.
- Speaker #1
It's such a pity this isn't a fall video. No, I know. It's great. It's just... We're both in our childhood pleasures. Yes.
- Speaker #0
I remember thinking that was so cool and the cabs are yellow and the rest is black and white. And I'm like, wow, I'm so edgy.
- Speaker #1
But that is a cool photo. It's a very like desktop screen saver.
- Speaker #0
It's a bit stock image.
- Speaker #1
Yeah.
- Speaker #0
It's probably AI before AI, whereas at least you look like you're very powerful. Ah,
- Speaker #1
that's another. I learned chat DBT over our break.
- Speaker #0
There you go. God, they're wizards.
- Speaker #1
May I say I love that robot. My J'adore is I'm like I think 10 years late to the party.
- Speaker #0
Great.
- Speaker #1
The series Power. Was this on E4?
- Speaker #0
Like, jog my memory.
- Speaker #1
Anyone I talked to, any guy I talked to was like, it's the best thing ever. And I was like, how did I not hear about it? Yeah. And I was trying to think, like, what was I doing in 2016? Like, I don't know what it was on. It's on Netflix now. And it's 50 Cent is associated. I think he's a producer, but he's also in it.
- Speaker #0
Fitty.
- Speaker #1
I have had a real journey with it. So there's six. series and I've just reached five. Six? It's so good and may I say so sexy.
- Speaker #0
Wow.
- Speaker #1
Whoa. Some of the scenes in it are insane. I was watching it on the plane the other night and I had to kind of move it because like the guy behind me definitely could see. It's so sexy. People are definitely going to be like this is just really old. but anyone who hasn't watched it should get into it.
- Speaker #0
Wow.
- Speaker #1
It's set in New York to kind of like drug are they dealers? No, they're like at the top of a drug empire. Oh,
- Speaker #0
it was the druggy. I thought it was more music industry led.
- Speaker #1
No, but one of them owns a nightclub so I think that's where you got that one from.
- Speaker #0
That's from the I definitely saw ads for this on E4 at the time.
- Speaker #1
And it's kind of like, you know getting stuck in with the wrong kind of crowd. and then you're kind of in it and what happens. It's so good and I really fancy the main guy.
- Speaker #0
Oh, wow.
- Speaker #1
And that's a really big J'adore and chat GPT.
- Speaker #0
Thank you, bots.
- Speaker #1
I love bots. What's yours?
- Speaker #0
My J'adore was the honeymoon. We had a great time. It feels maybe a year ago now, but yeah, we did maybe like 10 days in Philippines. Weather, not great. Not going to lie. It was quite the rainy season.
- Speaker #1
We were sending great photos though.
- Speaker #0
We had a great time in Thailand. Bangkok was amazing. It's like a New York Asia. The New York of Asia.
- Speaker #1
I haven't been back since...
- Speaker #0
Coastline Road days.
- Speaker #1
Must have been like 10 years ago. Yeah, but I want to do that with my next boyfriend.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, it was amazing. And we had like the Michelin star guide or the Michelin guide app on our phones and all the street food is on it. So you just like, you'd be at a corner and then you'd know where all the good places to go. And like it'd be like €2. Oh,
- Speaker #1
even going into a 7-Eleven there is like...
- Speaker #0
Oh my God, you could spend all day in there? Très bon. It's trippy. And the weather in Thailand was so much better. So it was great.
- Speaker #1
The photos you sent of Mick in the different places.
- Speaker #0
So funny. Yeah. Oh my God. Like the shopping centers there, like the dundrum of Bangkok is incredible. I felt like we were in a video game.
- Speaker #1
What's it called? Empire. Empire or something?
- Speaker #0
Yeah, there's a few of them. They all came with M and this was M Empire.
- Speaker #1
Oh yeah.
- Speaker #0
So cool. They're huge. So if anyone wants tips for Bangkok, get me on Instagram because I've sent loads now. It was great. So yeah, it was so good to be in Southeast Asia for a little while.
- Speaker #1
Of course.
- Speaker #0
And the people are so nice. Oh, it was just like Filipino people.
- Speaker #1
It's a bit more simple.
- Speaker #0
Yeah. I like the way you can just get massages for like a fiver for an hour. It's like. Trotter rub,
- Speaker #1
I know.
- Speaker #0
Oh, it was just the best. You get it every day. I'll be so relaxed.
- Speaker #1
You can see why they live so long, can't you? Yeah,
- Speaker #0
they're just so chill. Yeah. OK, so what was your jetest?
- Speaker #1
We never spoke about and just like that series three.
- Speaker #0
Oh, my God. Major.
- Speaker #1
And my jetest is that it's been cancelled.
- Speaker #0
Yeah.
- Speaker #1
And I don't think you'll feel the same. I was really getting into it there. I was like, this I can do. Yeah,
- Speaker #0
that's true. I think I was definitely in that camp of like, oh no, but I can't bitch about it anymore. When they filmed it, they didn't know that it was going to be cancelled. It feels like it's been cancelled since it's come out.
- Speaker #1
I thought it was really getting... You don't like it.
- Speaker #0
It's fine. I know. I still watch every episode, obviously. The last episode, the Thanksgiving, it was like, why are we getting all this screen time from... You know, like there was no pacing to the story. like There was all this time with like the baby mama of Brady's baby.
- Speaker #1
Oh, totally. But you know, like the main pillars of like Miranda and your one being together. I was like, they're perfect.
- Speaker #0
Yeah.
- Speaker #1
And she was really getting in the swing of things. And the older stuff from series one wasn't a thing anymore.
- Speaker #0
I didn't expect so much excrement to be in the final episode. But hey-ho, with the toilet issue.
- Speaker #1
Oh, right. I'm more like big. general what i felt about i don't remember any of the details like how annoying is aiden oh my god psychopath that guy what's terrible is like i used to think like that's the kind of guy i love and then i think they said this when they did sentimental garbage with dolly and caroline did a like or ip episode and i think they said it on there too but they always hated aiden yeah but just like i think when you're watching it at this age all the stuff he's doing is like He's horrific.
- Speaker #0
Like really bad. What really annoyed me though was when they broke up and it was all because he still didn't trust her. And she never said, well, like you got with your ex-wife. You know, I have a reason not to trust you, but I still trust you. That really annoyed me. But yeah, he is quite a toxic man. He's a dangerous toxic man because he's kind of like a wolf in sheep's clothing. You don't think he's toxic from the exterior. He's just this like denim clad.
- Speaker #1
virginian who makes furniture but actually really yeah you think he's a simple country boy but he's not no no very i also find sometimes the simple country boy is the most toxic yes yes mr big wasn't that toxic no
- Speaker #0
in fairness big told her the whole way through like this is who i am this is what i want and she just she made it more of a thing than it was you know he was always very clear with her like i don't want anything serious and she was like maybe we'll get married
- Speaker #1
you know bloody Aidan oh anyway good riddance he they break up spoiler alert I've never seen it but that was my test I was really sad when I heard that yeah
- Speaker #0
I'll miss the clothes the clothes were great oh I'll miss Seema really gorgeous yeah yeah she's great really good what about you my test is Ryanair have changed their baggage allowance thing or they're more sticklers for the baggage now so when I'm traveling like back and forth you know living bi-custody as yourself. They now don't even let you into the sitting area without checking your bag.
- Speaker #1
They don't let you in. OK.
- Speaker #0
So it's like this queue of people, like lambs to a slaughter, just waiting to be fined. So I've obviously come up with some tricks of the trade. And basically, you just don't start queuing until they start boarding the plane, because then they stop checking bags. No to Ben A for me.
- Speaker #1
Is this when you've paid for priority?
- Speaker #0
No, when you're just having a small bag or if you've any kind of like your bag is the wrong size.
- Speaker #1
I always do the priority with the bag, so I'm like, I can't, it makes me too stressed. However, over the summer, I've also realized that like... Ryanair is not for me.
- Speaker #0
No, I flew Aer Lingus actually the last time it was.
- Speaker #1
Oh, a Valium.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, it really was so calming and everything was on time.
- Speaker #1
And relaxed. Yeah. And I get a glide onto the plane. I actually started on a passenger there recently.
- Speaker #0
In Ryanair?
- Speaker #1
No.
- Speaker #0
I'm sorry, Aer Lingus.
- Speaker #1
It was actually Aer Lingus. But we were at like fourth to the back seats.
- Speaker #0
Yeah.
- Speaker #1
You know the way it's common courtesy that you file out as you filed in? Yeah. So you let the row go and let the row go. A few men charged up to beside me. Yeah. And one of them pushed past and then I stepped and another one brushed by and the third one tries to do it and I go, do you want to let us out? And then this woman on the other side, I was like, do you want to go first? And then she was like, thanks. And I was like, yeah, no problem. And I was like, don't, don't try and barge in front of me. Like I got real annoyed. Wow.
- Speaker #0
I was like, what are you running to? But it's just so rude.
- Speaker #1
It's actually true to women. Rude. Anyway, I tell them what's what.
- Speaker #0
What? Well done. Right, now we're going to do a little catch up of goss of old and new-ish and just quickly go through them all because like we really missed, did miss like a mountain of stuff. It was very hard not to have this podcast. First up, was it last week? Our dear, sweet... Bennifer had a bit of a reunion on the red carpet. They were there because she's in a movie and he was the producer. So was Matt Damon, but he had the decency and the common sense maybe to not show up.
- Speaker #1
Matt Damon's very elegant.
- Speaker #0
He is. Full of class. The movie is called like Diary of a Spider Woman or The Birth of a Spider Woman. It's an unusual name. Okay, I'll Google that in a moment. But they were on the red carpet and the chemistry was like... Everyone was saying, oh my God, oh my God, they definitely hooked up that night. What? And like, I just wonder, like, they definitely are one of those couples who are better when they're not together. And they obviously get lured into this, like, we should get married again. We should get engaged again. I just think for her, when they were together, it was so hard for her to, like, get him to do red carpet, get him to smile, get him to do anything. He's always so tired.
- Speaker #1
Exactly.
- Speaker #0
Now she's managed to...
- Speaker #1
Very.
- Speaker #0
Managed to get him on... some carpet to promote something.
- Speaker #1
You know, that probably is why is that they, she like let him go or whatever. But you know, when you're in something, someone won't do something. I was actually watching an episode of the Kardashians and Tristan was like giving her, being so nice to her after she broke up with him because of all the stuff he does. And she was just like, oh, you were never this nice to me when we were together.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, classic.
- Speaker #1
Too little, too late, buddy.
- Speaker #0
Yeah. And like you, if you wanted to do this, you would have done it at the time, not later on, pal.
- Speaker #1
I've never had a guy do that to me. I've had him just be mean to me when we're together.
- Speaker #0
Oh. It's like, why can't you just be nice all the time?
- Speaker #1
Yeah, yeah.
- Speaker #0
I know there is love for Bennifer and sadness when they broke up.
- Speaker #1
But like... You hate Bennifer.
- Speaker #0
I know. Hence my rant now. But like, I'm sorry. You can't make a documentary and a movie, a self-funded documentary and a movie with... mediocre results, saying this is the greatest love story never told. And then say six months later that she did some Good Morning America, one of those American TV shows, saying that like the divorce was the best thing to ever happen to her. And then like now you're on a red carpet with him. I just can't help but think that it's like I think she's always trying to say the right thing at the right time without remembering what she said. And it feels to me like a bit of a stunt to promote the film. Like if you look at all movies coming out at the moment. They all need stunts. And I think this is stunt promotion.
- Speaker #1
It must be so tiring trying to... Her mind was race all the time, thinking about what... Like, if she just stopped talking about it, it would be fine.
- Speaker #0
I know. And it's like she's always trying to, like, attach a narrative to something. If you could be, like, authentic for, like, two seconds, people would buy in a bit more. I just think it's, like, this weird...
- Speaker #1
I think the greatest love story of all time documentary, that was a real big eye-opener for me and I didn't, not in a good way.
- Speaker #0
It was an insight into that noggin of hers and it was unusual.
- Speaker #1
Not pleasant. No. But very entertaining.
- Speaker #0
Very.
- Speaker #1
But I still like her but I just wish she would kind of stop, just stop.
- Speaker #0
Exactly.
- Speaker #1
Like, stop. telling us when you're going back and forth it's fine we all do it but just stop telling me that you're going back to him oh no wait you finish with him wait he's back like just stop yeah enough's enough and him he's just grumpy she's too shiny for him like and like i think she loved the idea of it more than the oh don't we all gasp we all love the idea of rekindling with someone but then you know when you meet them and then you're like oh wait i you're
- Speaker #0
just it's almost like a mirage.
- Speaker #1
you've oh you've totally made it up in your noggin yeah
- Speaker #0
It's like, yeah, it's just the idea rather than the...
- Speaker #1
Oh, isn't that a book, the idea of you? Getting real poetic here on Hog.
- Speaker #0
Yes, we are. Now, sorry, I'm just going to self-correct. It's called Kiss of the Spider Woman and it is a musical film, just in case anyone wants to go and see it.
- Speaker #1
Kiss of a Spider Woman. And that's a gross name. Yeah,
- Speaker #0
leave it there.
- Speaker #1
I won't be watching that. No. But just... on the what we should watch and then we'll talk about later in an upcoming episode and if the listeners would like to join along i think everyone needs to watch the first episode i haven't watched it of the nelly and ashanti reality show yes and then we can have a group discussion yeah
- Speaker #0
i'm sorry i watched the trailer i like i kind of forgot they were together i watched the trailer during the summer we need we need to find out where it's on it's hey you okay it's hey you hey you or probably on some sort of dodgy box. yes for those who may or may not have one and they have a baby which is like so naughty nostalgia I really like her from John Tucker Must Die yes she was great in that okay moving on to another bunch of exes is Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban another thing I was shocked at how much you knew how much you knew
- Speaker #1
I was like oh the little fella and her aren't together anymore and just sort of glazed past it is what do you think like the whole internet is obsessed with this I suppose because it's like they're together nearly 20 years.
- Speaker #0
I never felt much growl for him. He feels a bit AI to me. It's kind of like, are you Australian? Are you American? I know he's pretty big in the country music scene, but like it just seemed like a bit of a, like a nah relationship. Like you know nothing about them.
- Speaker #1
Yeah, and I don't like, does he have anything to say? I like her. I saw Baby Girl over the break.
- Speaker #0
Oh yeah, so did my mum. I was like, Jesus, Annie.
- Speaker #1
Have you seen it? No,
- Speaker #0
but I know it's meant to be very raunchy.
- Speaker #1
Yeah, it's a bit twisted.
- Speaker #0
Ooh. So what I will tell you about this separation is I was watching a little reel and this he I don't know his name but he is a presenter on e-news and he said that with celebrity breakups you have the separations and you have the divorces and the divorces are the amicable ones because they've been able to get the lawyers involved and they're saying this is what's happening this is the deal. But when people announced the separation, it means there was a leak or one side wasn't ready to go for it. So apparently it's like it was coming out. So then Nicole's side rushed a press release over to People magazine. So there was definitely something afoot. So they weren't able to say, hey, we're getting divorced because they've been living separately for a while, apparently. And all sources are pointing to he met somebody else. And this person. is Maggie, who's a 25 year old guitarist in his band. And he's on tour at the moment. And if you look at any of the videos, some people were saying he didn't look sober. It's quite clear he looks extremely angry. Like he's singing his songs with a lot of venom and spitting. But so it's because they haven't been like together for a while. There was this one song that he has called The Fighter and it's meant to be about Nicole because like she's a big part of him being sober. and during an April performance, he sang the lyrics, I was born to love you, as he looked at, pointed at Maggie, the guitarist. And then at a more recent performance, he changed the lyrics. So when they were about Nicole, they said, when they're trying to get you, baby, I'll be the fighter. And he's changed the lyrics now to, when they're trying to get to you, Maggie, I'll be your guitar player. And then now she's released a song all about fighting feelings.
- Speaker #1
Sounds a bit like, you know, that guy Eamon.
- Speaker #0
Oh my God, fuck you.
- Speaker #1
Who did F U. And she did.
- Speaker #0
Did she do F U right back? She did.
- Speaker #1
That was amazing.
- Speaker #0
That was another naughty song.
- Speaker #1
We should go back to that type of music.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, please. Fuck you, you know.
- Speaker #1
I wanna meet now. That was so good. So we got a bit of an Eamon and whatever her name is on our hands.
- Speaker #0
We do.
- Speaker #1
I saw something about it being all about the raunchy roles she's done lately.
- Speaker #0
and like to be fair she's working her hole off so like I'm sure they're not spending any time together he's on tour and she's like she's been in a weird amount of stuff I agree Big Little Lies The Perfect Couple Baby Girl that Hugh Grant one she's doing a lot of work yeah you're so correct that's fine distance but like that he obviously has had an affair whether it's with Maggie or not I don't know but the sources have all said betrayal betrayal betrayal and if they're sources to people that means they're sources people only do print sources from like close to the source. Like People is quite a legitimate website. And Maxi.
- Speaker #1
People's very depressing. I prefer Daily Mail personally.
- Speaker #0
Daily Mail, although it loves a bit of scandal. And so do we.
- Speaker #1
I see next on the list. Yes. The Kanye movie. Yeah. Where can we get our myths on the entire thing?
- Speaker #0
I doubt it would be on in cinemas here. It seems like an American release.
- Speaker #1
But like. No. Is she gonna though. get an injunction on it or whatever, like even a pyro version.
- Speaker #0
But it's in America. It's in cinemas in America. Like people are paying to go.
- Speaker #1
I'd pay to go.
- Speaker #0
Yeah.
- Speaker #1
When were those clips released when you and I were sending them to each other? It was only like two weeks ago, wasn't it? Three weeks ago? Yeah. The one where he's shouting at Kris Jenner.
- Speaker #0
I know, she does so well.
- Speaker #1
It makes so much sense because I was watching like an episode of it recently and it's definitely kind of around that time. Yeah. And it makes so much sense.
- Speaker #0
Because he's clearly like off his meds and that must be really difficult for like people in his life who are trying to... you know.
- Speaker #1
Where she's crying and she's like your personality wasn't like this a few years ago.
- Speaker #0
Yeah. And there was another one where he's on the phone to her and it's a video of them in the car. Yes. And it's like she's so aware she's being filmed or something because he's saying he's like a slave to Adidas, Adidas oh my god, to Adidas and she's like you can't say that, that's like that's not it. You work just because you work hard. yeah she's like working as a privilege basically and in fairness like she really is standing up to him like you wonder how it got released because like I assume they sign release forms but like yeah why there wasn't an injunction well I suppose when she was being filmed you consent to being filmed at the time yeah and it's like it's you can't really stop us can you see the one where they're like they look like they're kind of outside and he's talking directly to her and she's like that's totally fine
- Speaker #1
I don't know what triggered this have you seen that bit no I'm dying to see the full version of it because I don't know what he's saying to her, but I can't find it anywhere.
- Speaker #0
Yeah.
- Speaker #1
I don't know what he's saying. And she's like, it's totally fine. She's clearly freaked out. Oh, my gosh. She's like, I'm not sure what brought this on, but that's fine. Like, it's nuts.
- Speaker #0
Wow. There's one clip of him and he's like, I say something crazy or offensive and it gets me out of deals. Like, this is like the best technique ever.
- Speaker #1
Sorry, did you send me that? I think so. And he's like, and then I got out of all my contracts.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, as if he did it on purpose. Oh,
- Speaker #1
the shouting. Yeah,
- Speaker #0
it was scary.
- Speaker #1
It does matter.
- Speaker #0
Yeah.
- Speaker #1
Also, can we just tip our hats to Corey? Yeah. That man is so chilled.
- Speaker #0
What's going on with him and Chris though? Are they not...
- Speaker #1
Nothing, they're fine.
- Speaker #0
I've seen so many videos of them fighting.
- Speaker #1
I know, they're just chatting. You know, they've been together for like over 10 years. They're totally fine.
- Speaker #0
I feel like they only just got together. That's mad.
- Speaker #1
Me too. You know, the new series is out in like two weeks.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, thoughts on the trailer?
- Speaker #1
I thought it looked great. Who do you think put a hit out on game?
- Speaker #0
I think it's one of these things where they put all the drama in the trailer and then you watch it and it's just like nothing happens.
- Speaker #1
That's what one of my friends said.
- Speaker #0
I'd say it's going to be like a prank or something. No, I'd say someone did put the hit. I wonder if it's to do with the Diddy thing or something, I don't know.
- Speaker #1
Will you be watching All's Fair? I think I might try watch one episode.
- Speaker #0
Is it on Hey You or where is it on?
- Speaker #1
Disney.
- Speaker #0
Oh, maybe. It does seem like powerhousing women.
- Speaker #1
Oh, it looks even just for the clothes.
- Speaker #0
Yeah,
- Speaker #1
yeah. I'd like to own just for the pageantry. I'll watch it. Just one episode.
- Speaker #0
But I love how there's like Glenn Close and like Sarah Paulson and then like Kim is the star.
- Speaker #1
It's such a ridiculous concept. She's like, oh, I'm a new acting career. And you're like, are you serious? No, sorry. Nike Skims looks very cool.
- Speaker #0
Very cool.
- Speaker #1
You know, it's a whole, it's its own company. It's one entity. Like it's completely its own brand.
- Speaker #0
Oh my god, wow
- Speaker #1
It's its own entity
- Speaker #0
Wow, cool Fancy So that's going to be long term then I wonder if that's a bit of an FU to Kanye and Adidas Oh,
- Speaker #1
Hun D.P. I'd say if that were right Oh yes, I wanted to talk to you about Ed Sheeran identifying culturally as Irish Was this when he was at the Flack Hill in Wexford? Is it called the Flack Hill? Yeah,
- Speaker #0
he was in Wexford singing along
- Speaker #1
For anyone who doesn't know, Clara hates
- Speaker #0
Ed Sheeran I hate him With every...
- Speaker #1
So I wanted to ask you about it on the first episode.
- Speaker #0
What is his lineage?
- Speaker #1
His granny's Irish.
- Speaker #0
He just wants a fucking Irish passport. That's all he wants. He's just using us for access to Europe.
- Speaker #1
My sister said when she... I think around the time I saw this, she was like, if you bring up Ed Sheeran around Clare, she... It's so good.
- Speaker #0
All he does is talk about how famous he is. I'm sick of it.
- Speaker #1
You know, he doesn't have a mobile phone.
- Speaker #0
I don't have a phone. He's trying to be so kooky. And like his whole house is like a game. You have a child, sir. Like just grow up. Like every time he's on the Graham Norton show. Oh, I just, I used to be able to go to Japan because nobody knew who I was. But now I'm number one in seven cities and sold 14.23 million records. It's like, how do you know your stats this well?
- Speaker #1
What age is he?
- Speaker #0
Like 14, I'm not sure.
- Speaker #1
You look irritated talking about it.
- Speaker #0
I know, I know. Look, I tip my hat to him.
- Speaker #1
I don't think you do.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, but no. Like say, do you remember when he played Crowe Park a few years ago? And like, you know, he is just like a man with a guitar. Oh yeah,
- Speaker #1
and the loop and everything.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, and to commandeer and keep the attention of like 70,000 people with no dancers, with no, with nothing. I think that is amazing. I also love what he said about... when he got sued, was it like Marvin Gaye's family about that he had copied a song? Oh, yeah. And he said, like, that's like trying to copyright the color blue, which I loved. And the way he was like, oh,
- Speaker #1
I'm going to color blue.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, I give up music. But what I don't like is like he appropriated a lot of music, like, you know, when he did all like no scrubs and stuff, like he just put like a white twist on black songs. And like the Rolling Stones have done it. Loads of white people have done it. But and that's where I'm just kind of like you kind of made your mark. using other appropriating other people's music to get famous and now all you do is talk about how famous you are. Fuck off.
- Speaker #1
Sorry. Also, can we talk about why Justin Timberlake hasn't been legitimately cancelled?
- Speaker #0
This man is like Teflon.
- Speaker #1
Why is he still around?
- Speaker #0
What is going on? All those footage of his concerts and he's like dialing it in.
- Speaker #1
I thought he was cancelled and then...
- Speaker #0
No.
- Speaker #1
Again and again.
- Speaker #0
Who is paying to go see him?
- Speaker #1
Well, they want their money back if you saw all those things. Where he's like not performing.
- Speaker #0
And he's not even properly singing.
- Speaker #1
Next up, Celebrity Traders.
- Speaker #0
Oh, yes. Is this your first experience, your first dalliance with Traders?
- Speaker #1
I think so. I heard the Irish one was brilliant over the summer.
- Speaker #0
It was fantastic.
- Speaker #1
My mum, who doesn't, she was going somewhere and she rushed. To see it. She was like, it's that good. And my mum doesn't do that.
- Speaker #0
Oh my God. Scotland home. Yeah.
- Speaker #1
My mum was no slave to a television. You know what I mean? She's like, if it's on, it's on. But she was like, Sophie,
- Speaker #0
it's just so accent. I heard that it like single handedly saved RTE and the TV licensing issue. Like it got people back watching RTE. And it was worth it. Well deserved.
- Speaker #1
Lest we go back into the RTE scandal again. My favourite topic. I watched episode two and you watched episode one. So. I mean, I'm very into it already.
- Speaker #0
It's brilliant. Alan Carr is chef's kiss. Terrible. He's so good. Like, so good at being bad.
- Speaker #1
He's such a bad liar.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, it's amazing.
- Speaker #1
Why did he get rid of Paloma's face?
- Speaker #0
Oh, I didn't... Okay. Oh, shit, sorry. It's fine, it's fine, it's fine. No, I knew you'd tell me to wear it, so don't worry. Oh, no. Poor Paloma.
- Speaker #1
They're friends. Why did he pick her?
- Speaker #0
Because he had to do all that touching the face, so... Maybe it's like, who would let me touch the face?
- Speaker #1
No, because he did it well. The way he did it, like, is the way I would have thought to do it. Saying like, oh, there's a tiny something, a bit of something on your face. Which you'd never second guess.
- Speaker #0
No, no, no, no.
- Speaker #1
And then he's so awkward during the rest of it. He's like... And he gets drenched.
- Speaker #0
So sweaty.
- Speaker #1
No, no, but they go outside and everyone else has an umbrella basically bar him. And he is so wet. Some of it's a bit graphic. There was a whole kind of funeral thing, which I didn't like at all.
- Speaker #0
They really like to go in on the... the heavy murdering.
- Speaker #1
I didn't like that part I have to say.
- Speaker #0
No. But
- Speaker #1
I think it's going to be good.
- Speaker #0
This one, so it's only twice a week and it's going to be shorter so I think they're kind of condensing a normal series into the smaller.
- Speaker #1
Oh, how much? Oh, because they're celebrities.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Speaker #1
Jonathan Ross, I think, is going to be a good traitor.
- Speaker #0
A good traitor, yes. But sorry, him in the first episode, right, so he's wearing a jumpsuit, a Top Gun jumpsuit.
- Speaker #1
I know exactly what you're talking about. He wears that all the time.
- Speaker #0
What? It's so weird. He's performance dressing.
- Speaker #1
I've seen him in it before.
- Speaker #0
Ew.
- Speaker #1
He wore this thing last night and it was like a feathered stripy poncho. It looked ridiculous. But he's very quirky.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, it's not even like stylish. You know, you wouldn't mind if people are in kind of kookier clothing, but it's actually cool. This is just like a bit of a joke. Like what's the stupidest thing in the wardrobe? And I'll put it on as like a joke.
- Speaker #1
He's quirky. Kay Garraway is getting awful attention for being so like over-exaggerative. It's very funny.
- Speaker #0
Oh, amazing. I like her.
- Speaker #1
Yeah, and she's like, no, no, that's just me.
- Speaker #0
That's so good. And I love how suspicious your one Celia Irwin is. You know the woman, she's in Calendar Girls and she's in Thursday Murder Club.
- Speaker #1
And Bridget Jones.
- Speaker #0
Yes, yes, yes. She's so funny. She's like, they could be a traitor. They could be a traitor. You could be a traitor. It's very funny.
- Speaker #1
Who else is in it?
- Speaker #0
I love Stephen Fry. oh love him he can do no wrong you know who racks my head Tom Daley he has some weird clothes too it's like they're dressing up for the castle when they all got dressed for the funeral they looked really chic yeah okay because I think with the celebrity ones with the normal traitors or like the muggle traitors they're more cutthroat they're more cutthroat because they're just there for the money and they don't mind killing each other as much whereas like with the celebrity ones they're obviously not going to get rid of Stephen Fry week one because they care about being liked. Like they have their image to think of. So it adds like a new dynamic, which I love.
- Speaker #1
Paloma Faith said this on the after show. She was like, the one good I'm taking out of it is that no one saw me be like a bit of an asshole. She was like, the further you get into it, the more, yeah, you're totally right.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, the more risk.
- Speaker #1
You're so right. You're so clever.
- Speaker #0
Oh, wow.
- Speaker #1
My mum was saying, though, who's your one that did the Irish one? The presenter?
- Speaker #0
Oh, Siobhan McSweeney.
- Speaker #1
My mum was like, Claudia Winkleman doesn't have a... patch on her. Yeah, she was like, she doesn't, she's very serious.
- Speaker #0
I think, yeah, Siobhan definitely added a humour to it that maybe Claudia doesn't, but and I don't know the backstory, but some of Siobhan McSweeney's clothes were...
- Speaker #1
Oh, my mum was telling me they were... Out there.
- Speaker #0
It was a bit like, ex-drama teacher, I've just rummaged through the school costume closet. Like,
- Speaker #1
every time she'd just be wearing a cardigan and just would throw on that William Shakespeare like Tudor you know if I think if you and I took a few bad turns we could both be an extra teacher in like 20 years like a twitching eye yeah like some of the ones we had in school were bonkers yeah yeah making up for careers what could have been kind of yeah but like I can see where they're coming from yeah laughing I think, sorry, if it's compressed, I think it's on next Wednesday. So maybe every week we come just with an ounce of what we think.
- Speaker #0
Of traders. Yes, definitely. Oh, yeah.
- Speaker #1
Closer to the time we should write down who we think is going to win.
- Speaker #0
Yes.
- Speaker #1
And whoever wins. wins wins glory whoever wins wins time with trish or your mom yes a coffee from either mom what a fun charity game okay slept traders taylor's new album taylor's
- Speaker #0
new album do you know what all in the name of research today i listened to it i've first time i've listened to a taylor album since like one of the older ones and you know what i liked it there's a lot of mixed reviews I thought it was like catchy. Max Martin, you know, he's the same producer that did like Britney and Backstreet Boys. And he did.
- Speaker #1
Oh, he's like a Nordic genius.
- Speaker #0
1989. It's so funny, though, how your algorithm kind of like shapes everything. Like I'm not seeing any positive Taylor Swift. I'm just seeing people like slagging it off or like people who are annoyed by it. It's just kind of like mad that I just don't get any. And I haven't particularly liked or clicked into things.
- Speaker #1
Are you a secret Swifty?
- Speaker #0
No, no.
- Speaker #1
No, I would say you're the opposite of a Swifty.
- Speaker #0
Yes, yes, yes.
- Speaker #1
Would you agree? But
- Speaker #0
I, yeah, I agree. I think I really am into Swifty. So a lot of the conflicts are that she's singing about being really happy. And, you know, there's that song called Wood that's all about Travis's, I know we don't want to. Willie. Yeah, Willie. And like, it's almost like a lot of like. you know I'm so happy I'm so happy but then reading as she's actually really angry and pissed off and exhausted and a bit on guard so I haven't read
- Speaker #1
I just knew it was kind of not received very well but I haven't read into specific songs yeah like I know about some of them but I liked it as a listen some of them kind of you know in the middle you're a bit like yes yes I think it starts strong but I like the Ophelia one and I like Life of a Showgirl I like those two very much Have you listened to Sentimental Garbage? I've done an episode on it. No,
- Speaker #0
you see, I'm not a Swifty.
- Speaker #1
No, it's good.
- Speaker #0
Like, I have so many podcasts to listen to. I don't think I'm going to listen to an hour and a half on Taylor. Like, I... Sorry. But give me the Cliff Notes and maybe I'll... Oh,
- Speaker #1
I can't remember any. I just liked it.
- Speaker #0
But I think... Yes, Caroline. Oh,
- Speaker #1
oh, I now remember one. Great. They said that, you know the one, Elizabeth Taylor. They said it's actually saying, a little bit Taylor.
- Speaker #0
Oh, go away. Easter egg.
- Speaker #1
Yeah, which I really enjoyed.
- Speaker #0
You see, I'm not a lyricist. I just prefer the beats. Songwriters are kind of wasted on me because I'm more...
- Speaker #1
You're a Trevor Nelson.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, like I'm all about the like Timbaland bass lines, you know, I'm not into, I just don't, I just tune out when I'm listening to music. I don't listen to the lyrics.
- Speaker #1
Symphonics.
- Speaker #0
Yes. Like, give me a like Missy Elliott, like... I won't even bother but like I'm just I don't listen to you know that's what I listen to I don't listen that's probably why I'm not a Swifty I love the pageantry of when she does something but but I think it is interesting right because she's been on this journey and via all this songwriting a little bit Taylor yeah that's I'm going to re-listen to that now thank you Caroline I'm done with you it's very insightful but you know the way eat. especially with reputation, you know, like her whole reputation is ruined. Oh,
- Speaker #1
that is something I'd like to skip back to.
- Speaker #0
Yes, and like, are you ready for it? And that kind of stuff. But like, she's used to being the underdog. But now I suppose she's in this point in her career where she had like the biggest tour to ever exist last year with the Irish Tour. You know, she's engaged now. You know, she's kind of reached like quite a peak.
- Speaker #1
Where she's kind of been talking about the whole time.
- Speaker #0
Exactly. And it's like the English teacher and the gym teacher. But she's still using these mechanics of like the haters, look at me now, middle fingers. And like it comes across a bit like you've got everything you wanted. Like if you're so happy, then why do you care about, why are you always like obsessed with the negative? Like when you have so much positive going on.
- Speaker #1
There's some song that's about, is it To Charlie XCX?
- Speaker #0
Oh, actually romantic.
- Speaker #1
And it's basically like, I don't even have time to think about you, isn't it?
- Speaker #0
Yeah. And it's like, you're the chihuahua in a handbag, you cokehead.
- Speaker #1
Oh, well, that's very graphic.
- Speaker #0
Like it starts, like starts strong. And I think like...
- Speaker #1
Does she say cokehead?
- Speaker #0
Yeah, like one of the first lyrics is you're nothing but a cokehead or something.
- Speaker #1
God, clutching my pearls.
- Speaker #0
I know. So it's in response to Charlie's song Sympathy for a Knife. But what Charlie was singing about in that song is like jealousy is like a feeling or like, you know, feeling, not feeling great. And like the people that make you not feel great. Like it wasn't necessarily a diss track at Taylor. But it was more like, I hope I don't see it backstage. Like, I'm glad your boyfriend ghosted you. So there is a few like cutting lines, but then Taylor does this whole big song. So I thought that that was just, it's a little bit punching down. I don't know. And like, you've no reason to believe a feud existed, right? But. I remember at the Grammys when Charlie XCX was performing, Taylor's there and she was in this kind of like blazer and she had a bottle of bubbles in her hand and she's there going nuts while Charlie was on the main stage. That's only in January, even though on that album there was a dig at her. And then I read an article that said that when Charlie was releasing Brash last summer, Taylor goes and releases a load of like deluxe versions of the Tortured Poets Society. on that UK like charting week. So it stopped Charlie getting the number one, which I was like, God, these girls are really going at each other.
- Speaker #1
That was some like really good background.
- Speaker #0
The one thing about Taylor is like, she really knows how to like control the narrative. She has a real commercial sense.
- Speaker #1
She's very controlling.
- Speaker #0
Yeah. And a real like commercial capitalistic mindset.
- Speaker #1
Well, did you see when she was on, I don't know what, someone's talking to some interview and she was like,
- Speaker #0
Zane Lowe.
- Speaker #1
If it's my record week and people are talking about my record, if it's good or if it's bad, they're still talking about it. I was like,
- Speaker #0
oh. She used the word, she said exactly that. And then she said, you're helping, which I think was very revealing. Very revealing. Because it's like, you're just showing like that you just want, you know, it wasn't more like, I want everyone to enjoy my music. It's a bit like, I need to squeeze.
- Speaker #1
A little bit. Taylor
- Speaker #0
I agree with you and I also found it this weird like she's doing a lot of press like okay yes Zane Lowe she had Graham Norton you know I thought she was kind of in the Beyonce I'm not gonna be interviewed like she stopped doing interviews there for a while I thought I know she's gasping to chat gasping I did like her engagement story she said it on the couch at Graham Norton oh I didn't what do you think of her ring it's huge it's very old age old worldy isn't it yeah yeah it's kind of antiquey It's very unusual.
- Speaker #1
I'd love to put some highlights in her hair.
- Speaker #0
I know.
- Speaker #1
It's very muddled, the colour with the fringe.
- Speaker #0
It's very like just a lot of hair.
- Speaker #1
Yeah, I'd love to put something in it.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, or just like push back the fringe.
- Speaker #1
I'd love to see her with a slicked back look.
- Speaker #0
I know, it's like very samey. The winged and the red lip. The winged eye and the red lip. But the engagement story was when they did the recording of New Heights, they did that for like three or four hours. Meanwhile, in the back garden, they set up that big flower garden. So he proposed on the day, which I thought was like really thoughtful and cute. Anyway, sorry, just going back to her capitalistic nature. She has released 200 songs since 2020.
- Speaker #1
Well, sorry, I had something to do with work and I was looking at, because I always hear she has all these different versions of stuff and LPs and albums and artworks and stuff. And she had like, I think, three different LPs all with different artworks. And I think I saw her just being like. each one has like a different poem in it. And she's like, if you're a parent and your kid loves them, that's, I'm like, no.
- Speaker #0
I know. Like you're really squeezing the parents and the kids a lot. I find that. And then the tickets.
- Speaker #1
They're like the deluxe version which comes with a poster. Or if you get certain tickets for her show, you get like this box. And I know someone who got the box and the box was just like full of tat. Like a badge. Which like, if you're a kid, you'd love. but like it's so expensive.
- Speaker #0
Yeah. And even she was in cinemas and then it was like you kind of watch all the music videos for Life of a Showgirl.
- Speaker #1
On Sentimental Garbage they went to it.
- Speaker #0
Oh wait.
- Speaker #1
Go ahead. And they were like I don't know I can't believe we paid for that.
- Speaker #0
Yeah. Seems like just don't do it. It's just a cash grab. It seems like don't. But the head of her record label did come out and say like we want and need super fans and people who are going to like champion basically that they want older artists to be like Taylor Swift who who The fans buy everything.
- Speaker #1
Of course they do.
- Speaker #0
And all they say is gospel. But yeah.
- Speaker #1
But that's, of course they do. Yeah,
- Speaker #0
yeah, yeah. But she's, it kind of speaks to why she's their biggest artist, you know, if that's the ethos of the label. But sorry, just to finish on Taylor.
- Speaker #1
To finish on Taylor.
- Speaker #0
I think that it felt like there was no need for this album to come out so soon after the tour. And I say that being aware that I'm not a Swifty. But it feels like you need a year to give yourself a bit of perspective.
- Speaker #1
But she's doing this all during the tour.
- Speaker #0
Exactly. Like you don't need, like I just find it, it's a bit like the 200 songs since 2020 just is just like, oh my God, you need like, just take a break. And also like if they're saying, if the Swifties are all saying like the sound, the lyrics aren't as good. It's like, well, you need to give yourself a break. You're kind of like, you know, constantly trying to churn out some stuff. But in saying that. Her next album is her 13th, we all know that's her favorite number, and this year is Travis's 13th NFL season and they have their wedding, so it's like they're surely she's gonna do like an album around that.
- Speaker #1
Sorry, what will the wedding be like?
- Speaker #0
I know. Do you see Greg James on Radio 1 was invited. She invited him on. She was on the breakfast show.
- Speaker #1
Wait, has she already planned it?
- Speaker #0
I think it's next year. In like Rhode Island. Oh my God. Or somewhere like Connecticut-y, like Ralph Lauren country.
- Speaker #1
Selena Gomez got married as well.
- Speaker #0
I know, but you couldn't get one fucking photo like in there. There was no, they did a very good job of like shutting that down.
- Speaker #1
Very strange.
- Speaker #0
But what Taylor reminded me of was Sabrina Carpenter's Man Child album. And while the cover was very controversial, It was that same thing of like you...
- Speaker #1
I love her. I saw her in Hyde Park during the summer.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, it looks so good.
- Speaker #1
Oh, it was a lovely audience.
- Speaker #0
Oh, I'd say so.
- Speaker #1
It was all like mums and their daughters. It was so nice. She's such a showman.
- Speaker #0
Yeah. But it's that thing of like you just finished this album. You know, you need to give the fans like a break a little bit. It just feels a bit like you didn't need to release this album so quickly. You know, and then people are like, oh, it's a bit fillery. But you can't really have a filler on...
- Speaker #1
Leave them all wanting more.
- Speaker #0
Your sophomore album shouldn't be filler. and I know there's like a curse and maybe it's not her sophomore but like wait are you talking about Sabrina Carpenter yeah yeah oh what's wrong with her album well it didn't get great reviews I'm sorry to say don't get me wrong I love Sabrina but like everyone's a bit like oh it's a bit meh like she should have given it a bit more time you know did we really need another album she's on the same pump out everything isn't she who are these execs making these women just churn out the hits let
- Speaker #1
it die down you know when you're like I wonder what you do on a day off yeah like what do you wear
- Speaker #0
If Taylor is literally on her day off in like Australia and then she flies to like Sweden to record with Max Martin and goes back on tour, like that's just crazy, man.
- Speaker #1
She did something nuts when she was on tour and she like flew from Japan.
- Speaker #0
To the NFL, to the Super Bowl.
- Speaker #1
And then turned it around so she'd be back for the next one with the time change. Something insane.
- Speaker #0
It's crazy. And like, hello, impact on the planet.
- Speaker #1
And your body.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, like just having a massage.
- Speaker #1
you know when your trotters expand when you're on a plane oh my god i know it's different when you're flying private and stuff but still yeah constipation dare i say real issues i'm sure these are the bodily fluid issues of being at altitude at great lengths yeah
- Speaker #0
as people who are bi-coastal we know what it's like for one hour around air flights but sorry and to finish finish of if you are missing the Taylor Swift Jack Antonoff power producing collaboration. He's done a new album with Doja Cat and oh my god it's called VIE or VIE, I don't know what I think it's French I'm not too sure I'm not too linguistic but it is loads of amazing samples it's a perfect like hour of just great fun 80s kind of pop with the modern edge, a little bit of rapping it's a bit like Janelle Monáe and Janet Jackson had a little baby album. that was a lovely explanation yeah I'd highly recommend that I've been dancing to it all day I watched an episode and a half of Victoria's documentary and I say that inverted commas because I actually think with these Netflix stuff that's coming out at the moment I don't it's like the Charlie Sheen one they're not really interviewed by people and there's no journalistic angle All there is is just yes men around these people explaining the story. Yeah. Self-commissioned, self-produced. It felt like just a three hour press release. I'm an episode and a half in. I don't know if I've finished it. I might just skip to the show. So basically what it is, is Victoria Beckham on her, the modern day storytelling is her and her brand going to Paris for Fashion Week, her first time showing there. And then it does all these flashbacks. to her Spice Girls days and how she came up and her family and stuff. So some of the headlines, Guardian has reviewed it as meticulously constructed, but extremely boring, a maddening waste of her personality. And it is about as intimate as a Pretz sandwich. The Irish Times said it was an opportunity for the former Spice Girl, an original wag to give her version of events, but it just morphs into an infomercial for Victoria Beckham. But the American press was way nicer. Vogue gave it an OK write off.
- Speaker #1
But like, sorry, she's never going to get a like what he got. No. Even though she should, because she is the one who's like taken so much over the years. Like I know he's taken a lot, but like he has all his stuff with like the affair and the OBE and stuff. And it was still like hailed an amazing documentary and self-commissioned. And she's unreal. I'm sorry, I haven't watched it yet. I'm dying to watch it.
- Speaker #0
definitely speaks to the sexism of how oh just because he was an amazing footballer all is forgiven whereas she has way more to prove because she's trying to get into this like fashion industry and like shed her past let's not forget he called your one a see you next Tuesday
- Speaker #1
on an email thread.
- Speaker #0
Oh, Catherine Jenkins.
- Speaker #1
About the OBE thing. That shows his frame of mind around what he's doing.
- Speaker #0
Yeah. But my problem with both those documentaries, and I didn't watch the David Wood one for like political reasons because I hate him. And I just felt like I'd be a sham. Like all I do is give out about him. So if I watched it, I would just be giving him a view. Okay. My pros around Victoria are she has impeccable taste. She's so...
- Speaker #1
Oh, the clean lines of the tailoring.
- Speaker #0
Oh my God. She's so elegant in her designs. And very naturally talented. She's never been trained. She had another designer kind of show her the ropes a bit. But like, you know, she's quite a like a natural eye. And like, you know, I thought that was really interesting. And it was amazing. Like, so they show this like product design meeting for the makeup line. And like... her feedback is amazing like it's really like direct and she knows exactly what she wants and to make it that much better like to give it that step up I thought that was really good oh I can't wait to watch it is there anything about Brooklyn in it? what do you think? no?
- Speaker #1
absolutely not this is a complete glossing over of any kind of thing that is going on oh we haven't spoken about that but I this could go on for two hours yeah hopefully there'll be an update next week and then we can talk about that brainwashed yeah
- Speaker #0
She does include like bad press, which is good. There's one burn that she gets this photo shoot with Marc Jacobs. She said, I was like, I saw the photos afterwards.
- Speaker #1
I read a teeny bit about this.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, and I was at the laughingstock of the fashion industry. So I thought that that was good. Like there was a bit of perspective, but across three hours, probably not.
- Speaker #1
But I heard she also talks about like her eating, which I never thought she would.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, but the prep for all the fashion show was amazing. Like it's, you know, it starts raining, all the French are going nuts. and like that That kind of like, we have 48 hours to pull this together. Like that part is really exciting.
- Speaker #1
It calmed down.
- Speaker #0
It really took me back to 2008 when I was producing the UCD fashion show. Just really reminded me of that. So it took me back to my fashion producing days. So thanks, Vic.
- Speaker #1
My creative director days.
- Speaker #0
Anyway, and then I guess my long list of cons are they just gloss over any of the affairs. they don't go into any scandal.
- Speaker #1
Well, if he's not going to talk about it, why should she?
- Speaker #0
Exactly. But I also think like, if you're not going to be raw, this is just self-indulgent because you're not even giving, okay, yes, fair enough. You don't have to talk about the affairs and Rebecca Luce or whatever. But like, she's telling the story. No one's interviewing her. You get friends, but it's a little bit like, here's me wanting to get into the fashion industry, but like Donatella Versace, Tom Ford and Anna Wintour are all the talking heads being like, like it's so hard to get in but like they're obviously on the show talking about that she obviously has gotten in so it's just a puff piece with no suspense this is quite I'm sorry but it is it's a little bit boring because they do these flashbacks right which is great but then they kind of rehash the flashbacks and it's a bit like are we back here again it feels a bit fillery at times she's kind of trying to pander to this fashion elite like get in there but then Mel B says to her, one of the other controversial moments is like Mel B says to her and she was like, I was so upset when she said it. It's like, don't forget where you came from. And then the episode is literally called Kill the Wag. It's like, OK, I know she meant like, don't forget that you were a Spice Girl. But it's also like it then shows her changing her entire life, her entire persona all to get into this fashion industry. So I just think it was a bit of a shame because like. You remember the Rolls-Royce comment from the David Beckham documentary? That was real. That was candid. That was like her being funny. And this was like an opportunity to see more of that. And you just didn't. And what I think should have happened was it should have been a movie. It does not need to be three hours. It's a commitment.
- Speaker #1
How many episodes? Four?
- Speaker #0
Three. What would have made it snappier and better? It's like this is this thing of giving us too much content. Give us just the fashion show because all the behind the scenes and then she's there going through like back doors of hotels and then like the kids are all arriving and like all that stuff is really exciting and the way like they're trying to do it but the weather's awful and that stuff is really good and I really enjoyed those bits and then just do like quick little flashbacks to the past and where she came from. It just would have been like so much more like snappy and like a lot like repeated points. I just felt... Yeah, it was just a three hour press release, basically, because she's just reading the whole thing.
- Speaker #1
I'm going to watch it and feedback.
- Speaker #0
You do, do. And I'll finish on a creepy comment. A thing I noticed, and I'll finish on a creepy comment. In the episode and a half, so do correct me if I'm wrong, but you never see David and Victoria kiss. They're always hugging. He's sick one time and he's like, no, no, don't kiss me. I'm sick. So she can't kiss him on the lips. And I just think that furthers my point that they're not together. And this is a sham. This is a money grabbing sham.
- Speaker #1
But can I not just say that everything you just said is completely tilted towards that opinion?
- Speaker #0
Yes, 100%. It's filtered in my direction.
- Speaker #1
Noted though. I'm going to watch it.
- Speaker #0
You know, like that meeting could have been in an email. I think if she had done an hour and a half movie instead of three hours, the narrative would be different. There was really exciting bits. You'll love all the Harper bits. She's done a few TikTok dances to Harper and it's great. So yeah, saws. Wow.
- Speaker #1
Myla. Sorry,
- Speaker #0
I'm just still seething.
- Speaker #1
I'm so sweaty from talking about the Beckhams. Gazzer. As we are wildly over time, because we needed to discuss the Beckhams and Taylor Swift in great detail, because you hate them. We had three things that we watched over the hiatus. I'm going to recommend mine and you're going to recommend yours. Gazza, what are your three?
- Speaker #0
Number one, overcompensating. Amazon Prime. Benny Drama, you know him, he used to do the Kardashian.
- Speaker #1
Oh, yeah.
- Speaker #0
He directed it, created it, produced it, all the good things. And it's his, I think, somewhat true story of being in college and accepting himself and his homosexuality while being this like perceived jock homecoming king. And it's him coming out in college or trying to and rejecting part of himself. And it's a real coming of age. It's a bit like it reminded me of like, you know, those American Pie films. You don't really they don't focus too much on like phones or anything. see it. Like the time is kind of skewed in it. It's brilliant. It's really, really funny. And a lovely like heart warmer. Nice little half an hour episodes. Another half an hour episode is on Apple TV. It's called Platonic. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is talking about this show. It is so funny. Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne from Bridesmaids. Oh yeah. Helen from Bridesmaids. The evil, the evil bitch from Bridesmaids.
- Speaker #1
Oh, I know exactly who she is. Cap Cunca.
- Speaker #0
Cap Cunca. They're in a show, half an hour again, friend comedy, basically two friends in college. They stop being friends because Rose Byrne hates Seth Rogen's girlfriend, then wife, and says to his face, so then they stop being friends. And then things happen and then they end up being friends again. And it is just two seasons of like a friend comedy of them getting each other into loads of trouble. But it is, the script is so funny. It's proper laugh, belly laughs, lovely half an hour when you're eating your dinner. It's great. No one is talking about it. Oh, I want to watch that. Like, it's never on any recommends and it's like top quality. Loads of people are in it. It's just, I'm annoyed that it's not spoken about more. So let me shout it from the rooftops. Platonic. And it kind of explores the idea of like, can men and women be friends? First season is all about her and like having a...
- Speaker #1
Do you think men and women can be friends?
- Speaker #0
I think they can, yeah. But I think it's, this explores it quite well because...
- Speaker #1
What do you think when two friends after a certain point get together?
- Speaker #0
Oh, it's a bit sad. Well, if they get together and it works out, it's great. But then it can kind of ruin a friendship. Yeah. Because if you're filled with Catholic guilt and shame, it sure will. Whereas, you know, some friends, you just, if you've scored them and then it's like, oh, it's actually fine. But I don't know. For me, that wouldn't ever work. My last one is another Amazon Prime one. The Girlfriend, Robin Wright from Forrest Gump fame.
- Speaker #1
Sorry, right? My sister watched this.
- Speaker #0
It is six episodes. This is how you fucking edit.
- Speaker #1
She said it's a bit weird, but good.
- Speaker #0
It's good. Yeah, it's weird good because it's a bit like White Lotus, like weird stuff happens and you just kind of have to just. uh suspendous belief as they say but it's great property porn they go away to spain and it's in this amazing house in spain which is actually owned by princess diana's family fun fact but it's just a great little teaser and what happens is because i just thought i was like a mother-in-law drama here we go don't need that ending in some kind of bloodbath but then actually what is great is you see the two perspectives as the show goes on So one half of the episode is the mum and the other half of the episode is the girlfriend's perspective. And the truth is in the middle.
- Speaker #1
It's very good. Oh, yeah. There's three sides to the story.
- Speaker #0
Their side, the other side and the truth. It's brilliant. Really enjoyed it. OK,
- Speaker #1
I could try that.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, it's a great little midweek romp.
- Speaker #1
Oh, great. I don't have any of those. OK,
- Speaker #0
so what are yours?
- Speaker #1
Mine are Completed Too Much on Netflix. That show is just... brilliant yes it's like a mix of like notting hill yes because it's lena dunham it has that of may it's brilliant the characters are so good it's really funny she's hilarious there's like perfect amount of like heart and comedy in it the scenery is brilliant because she goes from new york to london and she moves into she thinks she's going to an estate as in like a worldly estate and It's a cancel flash. And she like meets a guy in London, all that kind of stuff. And I loved it. I thought it was brilliant. And I'd highly recommend. I love Lena Dunham. Yeah,
- Speaker #0
it's nice to have her back.
- Speaker #1
I'm reading her book at the moment. Oh, yes. I'm reading her first book and she has a second one coming out in 2026.
- Speaker #0
I know. Oh, my God. Amazing.
- Speaker #1
I love her. She's very funny.
- Speaker #0
How cute is the dog in all the dresses?
- Speaker #1
That dog kind of made me a bit stressed.
- Speaker #0
I loved all her dresses. What was her name? Astrid.
- Speaker #1
You. Your attention to detail is. Something to be admired.
- Speaker #0
Mick said that actually the other day. He was like, how do you remember all these characters' names? And I was like...
- Speaker #1
I wouldn't have even known what the main character's name is.
- Speaker #0
Jess. You watched this ages ago.
- Speaker #1
All I do is say you're one.
- Speaker #0
I think I have some kind of like Rain Man for names and shows. Anyway.
- Speaker #1
It's very good, whatever it is. Anyway, I'd highly recommend. Now, House of Guinness. I haven't read the reviews on purpose. Okay. If you're a listener to the podcast normally, you'll know that I don't like reading reviews before absorbing the content myself. And then I read the reviews. House of Guinness hasn't gotten great reviews from what I understand. I really like it. I really like James Norton in it. He has a great Dublin accent. Oh, great. It's theatrical. It's like of a time. It's like moody and the scenery is brilliant and the costumes unreal. Great music. And it's like, you know, it wasn't supposed to... be more than it is. I think people thought it was going to be some really big historical thing and it's not like down to facts and stuff. I think it's really good. I think I'm on episode five.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, I heard it's very bingeable.
- Speaker #1
And oh, this is way back when in June when the submersive, the ocean gate.
- Speaker #0
Yeah.
- Speaker #1
If you listen to the podcast when that happened, which I think was 2023. It was in June and there was a race against time to find the submersive. and then it turned out to be all baloney. This documentary, I've only watched it once, but I had to watch it in private because the person who I was watching it with can't pay attention. Right. So I actually had to wait until they left.
- Speaker #0
Yeah.
- Speaker #1
It's James. He's just, I was like, this is really important. So I waited until he left and then I fully submerged, if you will, in it. It is nuts. If you need a good, like a documentary that's so captivating, it's unbelievable and obviously very sad. But it's very, very good.
- Speaker #0
It is brilliant. The company was in quite shambles when this happened.
- Speaker #1
It's kind of like Taylor's all the time, though, with this insane leader who's like...
- Speaker #0
And like fires all the people with truth.
- Speaker #1
One more. I don't know if anyone's heard about it properly. Swiped on... Disney. It's the story of Whitney Wolfe.
- Speaker #0
Okay.
- Speaker #1
Her story from there to creating Bumble. Oh, wow. And it's Lily James is playing the main girl. Oh,
- Speaker #0
wow.
- Speaker #1
I saw, found it on the release day by accident. It is such a good watch.
- Speaker #0
Oh, wow. What's it called again? Sorry.
- Speaker #1
Because it was really toxic culture. Swiped.
- Speaker #0
Oh, yes. Sorry.
- Speaker #1
Really good. Wow. We like just vomited a load of pop culture goss.
- Speaker #0
Yeah, a trance there.
- Speaker #1
It was good though, wasn't it?
- Speaker #0
Yeah. Oh,
- Speaker #1
yeah. We hope you're delighted we're back.
- Speaker #0
We're delighted to be back.
- Speaker #1
We are. And thank you for listening. I won't be in my childhood bedroom for the next recording.
- Speaker #0
Will you? No, I won't be in New York City anymore.
- Speaker #1
I won't be in. I have a sign in my room saying Princess Wife. But we're delighted to be back. Please send us anything you want us to talk about. Hopefully you got enough recap of what we've been digesting over the past few months. rate, review, subscribe, tell your friends and we'll talk to you next week. Woo!
- Speaker #0
Amazing. Whoa, that was such a mega dump.
