    That's a nice top you're wearing, isn't it?

  • Speaker #1

    Helen Steele.

  • Speaker #0

    Another Helen Steele.

  • Speaker #1

With a Helen Steele, like, baggy pant.

  • Speaker #0

    Stunning.

  • Speaker #1

I feel very chic. That's fabulous. But it's also got a bit of cereal on it. So, come see, come see. Hit it.

  • Speaker #0

Hello and welcome back to House of Gossip. Hog. Oink, oink. with me, the beloved Sophie Lyons, and thou, the equally cherished Clara. Welcome back, Clara. How are you today?

  • Speaker #1

I don't think you've referred to yourself as beloved.

  • Speaker #0

I never know what I'm going to say.

  • Speaker #1

Beloved by millions, adored by all.

  • Speaker #0

National treasure. Me. It's me. Oh, and Clara. How are you, Clara?

  • Speaker #1

Oh, very good. How are you?

  • Speaker #0

I actually said, I think I said equally cherished, so.

  • Speaker #1

No, no, no, no, no, no. Oh,

  • Speaker #0

gosh. So you're well? You're doing well? I'm doing great.

  • Speaker #1

I'm doing good. It's Friday. Excited to get into this episode with you. Just loving the reaction to our last couple of featurette episodes. Yeah, got a good few texts from...

  • Speaker #0

Oh, sorry. Can you say this one?

  • Speaker #1

Oh, yeah. I got this amazing text from... Sophie we used to live with.

  • Speaker #0

The way she describes it is like so speaks to myself.

  • Speaker #1

Yes, when we did our White Lotus, our second episode on our White Lotus lowdowns, we were talking all about Walter Goggins, aka Rick, the toxic, depressed man. She goes, when I tried to explain that I went out with moody people that low-key hate me, seeing it reflected on screen, I feel so seen. Thanks for talking about it.

  • Speaker #0

That's the last two situations I've had.

  • Speaker #1

    Same.

  • Speaker #0

They're so moody and they did hate me.

  • Speaker #1

    They, yeah.

  • Speaker #0

I don't know why, I'm so lovable. I'm beloved. Honestly, to this day, I'm like, what? Oh. And it was very similar. They're like, oh, do you want to do this? Just like them kind of dragging.

  • Speaker #1

Yes. Oh, dragging along and dragging you down with them. And then. being on tender hooks because you just know they're going to explode at any moment and you're like huh maybe maybe it's a bit of fun sir please what was i doing it's like an out of your body experience when i think about it now i don't know what i was doing definitely a big lesson learned

  • Speaker #0

holy shit i never thought that would happen to me but they did low-key hate me actually sorry it wasn't even low-key you It was kind of like normal key.

  • Speaker #1

    Normal key.

  • Speaker #0

They would always just be like, what? And like kind of question me and like, does anyone know what that is? Is it like because you think you have to earn it or something that you stay?

  • Speaker #1

I think, yeah, it comes down to like self-worth because the people around you are how you see. A reflection. Of how you see yourself.

  • Speaker #0

Isn't that so sad? That was my reflection.

  • Speaker #1

    Yeah.

  • Speaker #0

    Two bozos.

  • Speaker #1

But in order to get the self-worth.

  • Speaker #0

Here comes the shaman. Here she comes.

  • Speaker #1

To get that self-worth. They're the vehicle that you get your self-worth from. So when baby Clara had her grown adult man who wore a sequined top with gold wings on it. And you, the guy who you're calling and he doesn't give two fucking hoots.

  • Speaker #0

    On holidays.

  • Speaker #1

On holidays, saying you're having a great time and they just don't ask any questions.

  • Speaker #0

I just saw the Taj Mahal and they're like,

  • Speaker #1

okay nice or like work's really busy that's what I would get oh my god it's amazing and they'd be like oh yeah I'm just getting on the bus now but by jumping through that person you say to the universe no I deserve more than that piss off then the universe is like okay you're on a new wavelength I'll give you people you now know your self-worth you've proven to the universe that you know it and then the next person comes and they are on your level because you say no to the moody people who low-key hate you mild-key even-key high-key hate you I had two high-key haters meet me up here I'm eating here but

  • Speaker #0

also can we just did you test the girls who don't have to go through that it's fucking annoying I've really solved a lot of my anger but that still bothers me

  • Speaker #1

Sometimes though I do think it catches up with everyone at some time.

  • Speaker #0

    Well it better catch up.

  • Speaker #1

Not to go too planetary on this because I've already been quite woo woo and we're like two seconds in. Like Saturn return will come for you.

  • Speaker #0

    That is so calming.

  • Speaker #1

It may not be on the date the internet told you but your Saturn return will get you. It gets everyone. Your Saturn. So basically in a nutshell the day you're born. I need to write this down. 28 to 31 years later but it's like quite a wide window. It could be when you're 33.

  • Speaker #0

    Oh, mine came at 32.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, mine came at 33. And it wasn't the date the internet said. Saturn comes back to the exact point. that it was on the day you were born it's called your Saturn return and it is a reckoning it's very like tumultuous it makes you kind of come home to yourself in the sense that you're like who am I my 20s I've kind of learned who I am but my 30s who do I want to be and

  • Speaker #0

it can be breakups it can be losing your job it can be gaining and losing loads of things and then you have to figure out the best oh my god my Saturn returned last year with a high hit I've been bitching about exes for a while Gazzer, let's turn the tables and stop talking about lasers. What are you j'adoring as you're testing this week?

  • Speaker #1

I'm j'adoring jewellery. Any kind of jewellery.

  • Speaker #0

    Diamonds.

  • Speaker #1

    No, soon.

  • Speaker #0

    Your turn.

  • Speaker #1

Done. No, there's an Irish designer, I'm sure everyone's heard of them, one Dame Lane, Lindsay, I think it is. Yes. They were in town, then they went to Greystones, now they have a new shop in Blackrock Shopping Centre. Oh. I literally spent my whole Christmas in there. Staff know me and my mum extremely well. But all the jewellery is at like a really good price point, to use a lingo term. Anyway, I got a pair of hoops from there and they're like a huge big gold hoop and they're like dotted with pearls the whole way around. This isn't Spawn Con for One Dame Lane. They are just amazing and fabulous. So I got them for the day two of the wedding. and was wearing them and when I was home last weekend and I know one of the other girls has the hoops I was like Liv I know Unagi I just have a feeling she's gonna wear them tonight so I wore mine so then we both arrived at the pub same earrings it was like such a lull so we're there sitting at the back of the bath and we were like tete-a-teteing having a great old catch-up and then this guy starts talking to us and we were like whoa like Carrie Bradshaw like getting chatted off the bar like wow and then two drinks come over while we're currently drinking our drinks and we were like Oh my god, did he not see our wedding rings?

  • Speaker #0

Did he not see our huge rocks?

  • Speaker #1

Huge, yeah. But when the drinks came over, we didn't, he made a point of having his back to us. Or like, it was, he didn't really open it up. So we were like, oh, that's so weird. Like, we'll just take the...

  • Speaker #0

    Just take the drinks.

  • Speaker #1

We'll just take the drinks. And we were like, oh, like, it must be the power of the hoops. Like, the bigger the hoop, the bigger the hoe. Then the barman came back and was like, you have to pay. And we were like... we think somebody sent us these drinks so just want to double check and he came back and he's like oh that was just a bar error nobody bought you any drinks like oh no so we thought it was the power of our jewellery but it was just a bar mishap god's sake oh no so funny so anyway you know sometimes like sister in traveling pants when you wear something you just feel fab yes free drink well due to a clerical issue free and accounting mishap free drinks found us they must have been so dazzled by the pearls that they were like whoa i forgot i want to see them oh they're really cool yeah they're amazing we can link them in the show notes they're really good i have so much bits from there it's insane that was really funny it's a bit like misoma is that the one brand new in your sis love it's very like that but much cheaper oh yeah great so what are

  • Speaker #0

you loving her in mine came to me this morning i woke up to such an entertaining video you I think this is kind of like some Irish people know who they are and some don't. So they're basically, they're this family that are from Castle Bar in Mayo and they're the Burke family. And they're known for their religious activism and frequent involvement in legal cases and protests in Ireland. They're fundamentalist evangelical Christian Protestants. And they're just known for causing havoc. The one I knew the most was Enoch. Burke, which is one of the sons and he was a teacher in a school and wouldn't accept a student's change of pronoun and name. And then he got like suspended and then he would come up on the school grounds and then he would get put into Mountjoy prison and then come out and then do the same thing. Like they just love causing an argy-bargy. That's not the funny part. So last night, obviously, Mia Hall-Martin, the Taoiseach is over in the States for St. Patrick's Day and there's loads of content of him meeting Trump and stuff like that but didn't the Burke family show up at this gala it was an Irish funds gala in Washington DC and there's a video of it there's a video of it on news talk was particularly good from the tables in the middle of the award ceremony and there's like draping then to the side bits where you would walk up and go to the bathroom and stuff So the Burke family, which is the mum, the son and one of the daughters. decided to cause a bit of havoc and they start shouting and they go into the event. I don't know how they got into the event, P.S.

  • Speaker #1

Oh, yeah, because Trump was definitely not there. Surely there would have been more security of Trump.

  • Speaker #0

But like there should be loads of security anyway at a Washington, D.C. gala. And the video.

  • Speaker #1

    A Washington, D.C. gala?

  • Speaker #0

I've watched it so much. And there is some speech going on and then. The son just starts being like, Enoch Burke has been in prison for 500 days under the Irish government. I don't know. And then the mum is doing it and the son, and they're being like pulled out by security. And they're then, they're like falling, like they fall over. And they're like, the mum is then on her knees. She loses a shoe. And then the son is being kind of held up with his two arms out. It's so entertaining. And they're basically saying. he's been in prison. Also, the massive course to the taxpayer, some fool like him course, it's highly, highly entertaining. And then after they're speaking to the media who saw the kerfuffle and they're like following them being thrown out of the gala and then they realise they're Irish journalists and then they're like, we're not talking to you. You're working with the government and the judicial system. And, you know, the Irish people need to stand up and Micheál Martin is fooling the Americans. It's really a great watch, especially on a Friday.

  • Speaker #1

I saw one quote, she was like, one bit of it, she was like, he is forcing us to live in a society where everybody is accepted. Oh no, that sounds terrible.

  • Speaker #0

It's the juxtaposition of people like that in the States.

  • Speaker #1

    Yeah.

  • Speaker #0

Do you know what I mean? Because like, it's just a bit different. Like I'd say the guards obviously know the whole family. They're causing ruptures wherever they go. If you need a bit of light reading and maybe a bit of relief after a stressful work week, go onto the Wikipedia page, Burke underscore family in brackets, Castle Bar. Some of the stuff they've done is so ridiculous and it's so entertaining. I would just highly recommend. And then just also, they have 10 children and they're all biblical names. Ami, Elijah, Enoch, Esther, Isaac, Jemima, Josiah, Karen. Kezia and Simeon. God,

  • Speaker #1

can you imagine what dinner around their table was like? No. I don't want to.

  • Speaker #0

The mum didn't even care she lost a shoe either.

  • Speaker #1

    Well,

  • Speaker #0

except at the end. And the sister had then, the sister left with no shoes. And the sister was just like, slay. Also, I'm just wondering where they're getting all this money.

  • Speaker #1

    Exactly,

  • Speaker #0

yeah. Like they bring everyone to court and they.

  • Speaker #1

They must get, be state funded or they must know how to work that system though. to get it off.

  • Speaker #0

Oh, they definitely do. But there's such a drain on the system. But your man Enoch has started being fined for showing up on the school grounds. And I think he owes, I think it's like 130,000 now.

  • Speaker #1

But then his family can fly to Washington. You know, like, where are they getting the money if they, if...

  • Speaker #0

Yeah, 140,000 euro in fine for breach of court orders. And this guy is never going to pay them.

  • Speaker #1

    No way.

  • Speaker #0

Please, please. read the Wikipedia page if you need toxic family but they're all drinking the Kool-Aid yeah but like he didn't get it from nowhere do you know like Enoch didn't get that you know no they're renowned he's just the most famous one also just I'm just wondering like how do they get into the gala I don't know anyway it's it's entertaining I've watched the video so many times they're very a very strange family

  • Speaker #1

I hadn't heard from them in a while I feel like they were kind of low key they must have been scheming yeah

  • Speaker #0

Oh, of course. I wonder where they do their scheming.

  • Speaker #1

But it's also like the police have told him, please stop showing up at the school and we'll stop arresting you. But he keeps showing up.

  • Speaker #0

He said he has no interest in saying like, OK, I don't agree with you, but I'll just calm it down. Like he has no interest in it.

  • Speaker #1

But like he keeps breaking the law that they've set. And then they're like, he's been in jail for 500 days. It's like, well, he wouldn't be in jail if he just listened to what the guards are saying.

  • Speaker #0

But he doesn't want to. It's the words they use. It's some law jargon.

  • Speaker #1

That's like, oh, stop putting me in jail for murder. And then you keep murdering people.

  • Speaker #0

He also was put by himself in jail for his own safety, Bernie, in Mount Joy. They're like, he's in there with murderers and rapists.

  • Speaker #1

But like, if you break the law, that's the risk you got. But you don't get a choice in what jail you go to.

  • Speaker #0

And then, sorry, he went into the school then. Into like the hallways and stuff. Like he's...

  • Speaker #1

I feel really sorry for the families, though. Like imagine going through that and then... Your kid is just trying to have a normal education.

  • Speaker #0

And your child is the subject of it. Yeah,

  • Speaker #1

I agree. Yeah, and you're, this weird family keeps, are using you as like political fodder to like push their really toxic narrative. Like it's very hard for that family. And then all the other kids in the school. You know, you're just trying to go to school and this protester from a very odd family is just showing up constantly with their horrible views.

  • Speaker #0

I'd say every time the local guards get a call, they're like, he's at it again who's going to take Aina you lost the bet yesterday yeah over doughnuts

  • Speaker #1

make my way boys make my way toys okay moving on from the berks clara i've heard you have some tibbets i've got some news tibbets for you got a huge reaction to our megan episode so just doing a little bit of a follow-on piece let's get into the numbers jargon jazz hands you Unfortunately, in Netflix's data, they can't tell you what was a love watch and what was a hate watch of the show. But globally, it ranked 10th with 2.6 million views and 12.6 million hours spent. Putting that into context, Meghan and Harry's documentary, the one that came out a few years ago, got 81.6 million views in three days.

  • Speaker #0

Was it where Oprah was on it?

  • Speaker #1

No, no, no. That was... No, that was when they left the Royal Family. This one came out last year around the time of his book.

  • Speaker #0

    Apologies, I mustn't have cared.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah. In the UK, With Love, Megan came in seventh with a half a million households watching it. And then it came sixth in the US. So season two has already been announced in the most Megan way possible. She had a video of her in a baseball hat and it said, a pun. Let us remain.

  • Speaker #0

    As in lettuce.

  • Speaker #1

The salad item. Remain like the other type of vegetable or lettuce.

  • Speaker #0

    Oh, yeah, yeah. So

  • Speaker #1

L-E-T-T-U-C-E. Yeah. Remain like Oro M-A-I-N-E. Calm. And then on the back, With Love, Megan Season 2. So let us remain calm. With Love, Megan Season 2. I'd expect her to announce it in another way, to be fair. But. the season two has already been filmed so they did all season one and season two oh it's like wicked one and two exactly so what they do is a little netflix trick is they release the first half see the reaction and then recut the second half to tailor it that's tapped isn't it yeah the main thing of season one is it's just not authentic so it'll be interesting to see like will they put in extra clips of her social media or of her, what will they inject the show with and remove to make it look more warm? It'll respond to basically the criticism that it's grown in a lab, basically, and like not very...

  • Speaker #0

But equally, like, how did it get greenlit for season two? Do you think it was a two-season deal?

  • Speaker #1

That's part of the package because I've already filmed it.

  • Speaker #0

Oh, because when I read that, I was like, how on earth?

  • Speaker #1

And it's coming out in the fall. I'd say that deal was so big. They were always going to release two seasons anyway. And look, it gets everyone talking, whether it's good or bad. Everyone's been talking about this show since it came out on the 4th of March. And then that will line up. So there's going to be real bricks and mortar Netflix shops that are going to be selling the as ever jams and all that stuff.

  • Speaker #0

    Standalone shops?

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, there's one in Philadelphia and I think one in Dallas.

  • Speaker #0

    It's like a merch shop.

  • Speaker #1

In our Megan episode, we were talking about like, what's the PR plan? Why isn't anything lining up? Why would you do a show? with no website and nothing to sell. But maybe that will line up more in season two. I still don't think that that's a great strategy. I think it should have all been for season one. Why didn't you call it as ever? Whatever.

  • Speaker #0

Why didn't you call it whatever?

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, whatever. And then she's also announced a podcast called Confessions of a Female Founder, which is coming out in April. And it's going to be candid convos between herself and other female business owners talking about how they've built their... empires or their startups or whatever. I feel like her last podcast really, they dialed it in and it was kind of flopped.

  • Speaker #0

What was her last one about?

  • Speaker #1

It was called Archetypes. I think it was 12 episodes, but it was kind of how women are framed under one word. So like diva or whatever. They didn't do like slut or, they didn't do like the better words, obviously, because she probably doesn't want to talk like that.

  • Speaker #0

I would just say they'd find it hard to get a guest on. With the slut word.

  • Speaker #1

No, but you can have people who are reclaiming.

  • Speaker #0

But did that get cancelled or it was just a 12 episode deal?

  • Speaker #1

It got cancelled. Either they pulled out. It was kind of a bit of a Brooklyn Beckham. Oh, we like doing this. But it just and I think one of the ex-Spotify bosses came out and said that they were really about to work with. So, oh yeah, some of the titles of that, it was like Angry Black Woman, Good Wife, Bad Wife, Breaking Down the Bimbo with Paris Hilton and Eliza Schlesinger. She's very funny.

  • Speaker #0

She always needs another. celebrity to hold it up, doesn't she?

  • Speaker #1

She does. She can't, she doesn't have the like gravitas. No. Ambition, The Singleton, Dragon Lady.

  • Speaker #0

    Right.

  • Speaker #1

So anyway, she's going on to do a new one.

  • Speaker #0

    Yeah.

  • Speaker #1

Bleh. It's a lot. But look, at the same time though, we don't have to watch these. We don't have to listen to them. So it's just a lot in the same person.

  • Speaker #0

It's just a lot of like saturation.

  • Speaker #1

Just like do one thing and be good at it. Yeah. Like what we're saying with Brooklyn, just pick one. you know you can't really do all of the things and be really good at them just focus on one yeah I think it's the flip-flopping and then Millie Bobby Brown oh yes so she was in the headlines last few weeks for calling out all the journalists for saying that she looks really old what I really appreciated is in that video that she did they got like five or six million likes let alone views what I liked what she did about that is in it is she called out each and every one of the titles and the journalists who wrote them yeah one of the daily mail writers lydia hawkin she responded by saying in a in a social media video that she was going to resign. Shut up. She said she's not excusing it, but she doesn't pick the headline. And like she takes full ownership of having written that article because a lot of the ones that Millie called out were Daily Mail articles.

  • Speaker #0

    Whoa.

  • Speaker #1

But she has a new movie coming out called like The Electric State. And apparently Pamela Anderson gave her a load of her outfits from the 90s from her archive wardrobe. So that's where she's been wearing such like... Ooh. retro kind of clothes. Also apparently Britney Spears' book is being turned into a movie. What she wore to Call Her Daddy.

  • Speaker #0

And apparently that's her like subliminal messaging.

  • Speaker #1

Being like either she could have the role and she's subliminally getting us all to trying to vie for it. Or maybe she's gotten it and that's her way of kind of soft launching it. I don't know. Fair play to her for calling out those journalists. I think that was a really clever way to make us look in and go like actually we shouldn't be talking about a young girl's parents.

  • Speaker #0

One thing that made me really sad was she's engaged to, I don't know, she's married to him now, I think. Jon Bon Jovi's son. Oh, is that who it is? Yeah. He looks exactly like him. Wow. He's cute, like. But he said for her, like, hen or her bachelorette, he had like a full bachelorette or whatever. And her bachelorette was her and her husband and one gal pal. And she was like, I don't have many girlfriends, which I thought was really sad. She obviously would find it difficult to keep girlfriends. And because she got famous at like eight, she wouldn't have had like girlfriends or anything. I thought it was really sad.

  • Speaker #1

No, that makes me a bit sad. But like, also, you don't need to have a hen, you know? Nice to say, because I think like female friendships are important. I know a few people who didn't have hens and it was like they just didn't want one. I think that it's important to highlight, you know, it's not easy to make friends and you can...

  • Speaker #0

I just thought that was really sad.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, it is a bit sad.

  • Speaker #0

    Yeah.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, that's a somber... end to my top tibbets of the week sorry for bringing you down sorry bringing the town down there let's

  • Speaker #0

get into a bit of controversy okay so the snow white remake is coming out on the 21st of march so close i just watched the trailer before we started filming i think i'd seen it it looks sensational Wow. And it's been wrapped up in controversy since they finished filming. I can tell you all the reasons why. First, I need to tell you something. Disney themselves have completely scaled back on all the premieres and everything. They're not doing a London premiere.

  • Speaker #1

    Because of money or what?

  • Speaker #0

No, because of the controversy of the main girl, Rachel Zelger, I think is her name. They're completely scaling it back and not even inviting press to it. And they're not saying why, but apparently it's because of the controversies. And it cost something like £217 million to make. So the film's European premiere took place. Now, this usually would have a Leicester Square thing. No. Took place on Wednesday at a remote castle in Spain in Segrovia, which is a tiny place northwest of Madrid. No media outlets were invited to this castle. And she performed, the girl who's playing Snow White, to a really small crowd. And Los Angeles, they just did a few... poses and news journalists weren't invited to the red carpet. What? Isn't that so weird? And I can tell you why. All the controversies. Oh. Also was delayed. The release was delayed. It was supposed to come out September 2024. But it has just year-long controversies.

  • Speaker #1

This has all gone over my head.

  • Speaker #0

She came out because someone was like talking about the fact that she's not white.

  • Speaker #1

    Right.

  • Speaker #0

That was a big no-no basically. And she came back being like, yeah, they cast a non-white Snow White. Like, she's quite vocal. and then also Gal Gadot who plays the evil queen. There was ruptures between the two of them because Rachel Zegler was doing all this pro-Palestine stuff and Gal Gadot was doing... Is it really? And she served in the army or something.

  • Speaker #1

Because they have to in Israel, I think.

  • Speaker #0

Dear. So that's one of the things. Then obviously the seven dwarfs are a big part of the movie. And there was all this controversy saying they didn't hire actors with dwarfism. You know, Peter Dinklage. Yeah. He said, I was taken aback by the fact that they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White and then not use actors with dwarfism in it. And they're talking about making a more progressive story, but then they're not including those kind of actors in it. You're replacing jobs that people could have. as little people. It's for dwarves. Why are you hiring Snow White and savage average people? So then they went and made the dwarves via CGI.

  • Speaker #1

    Oh dear.

  • Speaker #0

    I know.

  • Speaker #1

So they just did CGI dwarves?

  • Speaker #0

From what I understand. And then she also came out after being like this story is very weird. She's like there's a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird, weird.

  • Speaker #1

Rachel Zegler said this about the Snow White storyline.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah, so apparently they didn't... they didn't focus on much in this remake.

  • Speaker #1

I don't really understand why we have to like keep remaking all the classics, but all the like the Disney classics, because why not just, I don't know, pay human to come up with a new story? You know, like Inside Out was amazing, you know, and did really well. Like there's loads of like new stories. Like do we keep having to go back and remake?

  • Speaker #0

I don't mind the remakes. I don't like all of them, but like this looks like I want to see this. Like seeing it not in a cartoon form. and they're singing and stuff like, but I would like that.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, but sometimes I think like the message of a lot of those classic stories are very dated. You know, it's damsel in distress. Oh,

  • Speaker #0

that's what she said. She said it's extremely dated when it comes to ideas of women being in roles of power.

  • Speaker #1

It's an old narrative that, I don't know, it doesn't really fit modern culture anymore. Do you really want, just because we loved it as kids, any of those stories, like Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, Pocahontas or whatever.

  • Speaker #0

you know, the happy ending means the girl gets the guy. And I don't know if that's a great message, unless they're going to retell the ending. I don't know if they're like great messages to keep retelling. Like it's, you can not to be too feminist and woke about it, but like, and I don't know how this white film is, I suppose more, just more broadly speaking, does it have to be the same? You're nothing without your prince saving you and you're helpless narrative.

  • Speaker #1

I don't know if I agree with you.

  • Speaker #0

Go on. I've run up my sleeves.

  • Speaker #1

I just think there's enough out there now that's challenging, like, the norms and, you know, women can do what men do and all this kind of stuff. And there are just, like, fairy tale classics that will remain the same. And I don't think they should have to be completely reworked because we're living in such a woke world that people can't handle, you know, these messages. Like, I see stuff I don't want to see every day. It doesn't mean, you know, I should be seeing a variation of stuff as a... a member of the public like that's that's life I shouldn't be shielded from art that was like that 50 years ago yeah you know that's where they're calling it a snowflake generation for

  • Speaker #0

Gen Z because their eyes can't handle seeing certain things but like that's life true I suppose maybe like as women as we like grow up the narratives that are fed to us are you're nothing without a partner you're not successful unless you have you're happily ever after And that like subliminal messaging is fed to us over and over and over again. And it's from such a young age, from when we're that small that we're watching these cartoons or now CGI master redoing things. I appreciate that it does create a, like with helicopter parents and things like that, it does create a snowflake generation. But can it not be an empowered generation where genders are more equal and the focus isn't on this romantic happily ever after?

  • Speaker #1

But like in day to day life, it's not equal still. Like I guess making art now or making TV shows now where there is a female protagonist and blah, blah, blah. You and I both know every business is powered by men based. Do you know what I mean?

  • Speaker #0

But it's about changing that narrative, the way men and women operate, just to be a bit heteronormative. But the way men and women, generally speaking, articulate themselves, they're very different in the workplace. And, you know, it's. But our workplaces are built for a male work ethic that don't allow for, you're kind of penalised if you take maternity.

  • Speaker #1

Or totally being like, what age are you? And, you know, are you married? Like, it's not legal to ask that. But people do get asked that in other ways.

  • Speaker #0

Exactly. And what's your five year plan? And all that kind of stuff.

  • Speaker #1

It's still very much a thing. Like, it's not, by no means is it going anywhere, sadly.

  • Speaker #0

No. We pick up these messages in loads of different ways. It's not Disney. It's Disney's fault. entirely. But those narratives are fed to us from such a young age. But like even how we talk to young boys and girls of like, don't cry, boys don't cry. No, no, don't do that. And then it's like how we treat genders as they grow up. You know, that does play a big impact then on how you go to be an adult. And I think, say even like Roald Dahl and the twits and how all older people are evil and like, you know, it's all that. Roald Dahl's actually very sinister very sinister and just because you have not you but like people have this kind of nostalgic feeling towards it actually the messaging behind it sometimes just because we're nostalgic about it doesn't mean that it needs to be passed on to the next generation because well let's talk about Grease okay at the end of it she totally changes herself and starts smoking but everyone loves that movie but he goes kind of preppy doesn't he they both change themselves but the main thing is she starts smoking and she does this and she does that do you know what I mean yeah yeah all from a fucking man it's very hard to have identity to find your identity when like pop culture is like shoving loads on you like i don't know it's hard to figure out who you are in this day and age even all the rom-coms that we watch like even remove it from the disney shows gotta get that girl gotta get that guy i love those rom-coms yeah but we're like that's why i think bridget jones is so successful or like or like dolly aldrich i know bridget jones does end up with the guy but like You know, Dolly Aldrich and all those people when they're speaking outside of the narrative because the mainstream narrative isn't relatable.

  • Speaker #1

But the mainstream narrative is kind of what people think.

  • Speaker #0

Exactly. But it's like, it's chicken and the egg. It's the vicious circle. Like, who's feeding what? Is it propaganda that we're just believing?

  • Speaker #1

But isn't that just life? It is mass culture because most people think like that.

  • Speaker #0

    But it's always so negative.

  • Speaker #1

I'm not saying I agree with all the things, but I just think...

  • Speaker #0

like that's the way it is sadly it is a bit depressing if you think about it I know why can't we just bake a cake made of rainbows and smiles everyone just get along cakes making cakes is from the 1950s she doesn't even go here we're

  • Speaker #1

never yeah it's an interesting chat to chat about sorry anyway the movie the movie the movie is it looks like it's being put in the bin before it's even come out wow so

  • Speaker #0

And you always know how... the studios feel about things by how they're released. Like say that George Clooney, Brad Pitt film that was on Apple TV, that was meant to get a similar release. Did you watch that? No, they realized it was shit and then just put it straight to Apple.

  • Speaker #1

James and I watched 25 minutes of a half an hour and I was like, I can't continue.

  • Speaker #0

    Yeah, apparently it's really boring.

  • Speaker #1

And dark. It's like physically there's no light.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah, and they're both playing like the exact same character. And it's like, this is kind of monologue as well. Yeah, it should be a yin and a yang. This is my number one rule. of Tinfoil Hat. So if you want to join the Tinfoil Hat Academy, this is the number one rule. Okay. Follow the money. That's all you have to do. Follow the money. If you're like, why didn't it get a good release? It's like the studio's out because they're not spending their money. Where are people spending their money? Follow the money. So Disney aren't behind that new film. You're on Rachel's Egg. Wasn't she in...

  • Speaker #1

    West Side Story.

  • Speaker #0

West Side Story. She had a bit of a missed opportunity because whoever starred in the film got cancelled.

  • Speaker #1

Hans Ligort. I was just thinking about him earlier. I was like, I have to Google him because he dropped off the face of the earth because he got some weird sexual assault claim.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah, all while they were promoting that film.

  • Speaker #1

And he was on the up and up. He was a bit of an Armie Hammer type energy. Not energy, sorry, type soaring. And he's not a cannibal.

  • Speaker #0

Sorry, sorry, sorry. He's not a cannibal.

  • Speaker #1

And he hasn't. His mum didn't get him a vasectomy. But he's filthy, filthy rich.

  • Speaker #0

Oh my God. Who haven't we covered today? I feel like this was like TMZ's news feed today. I really enjoyed that chat of fairytale narrative.

  • Speaker #1

I just feel I liked debating with you. Do you know what's really annoying? In school, we never did debating. And like, I would have liked it.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah. you would have been like Cher and Clueless yeah me a Karen you would have been so good I would have loved that anyway what now so before we go you've wrecked over us so

  • Speaker #1

I spoke about it with you last night briefly we watched the first episode and then I watched the following 12 or 15 minutes of the second episode of I don't know how you did that but you know when you said it then I was like she's so right like I had to come out of the vortex

  • Speaker #0

    It's a one episode a night watch.

  • Speaker #1

And I have to say a lot of the, what added to how intense it was, the fact that it's one camera.

  • Speaker #0

    One shot wonder.

  • Speaker #1

I am dying to know how they made it, but I don't want to Google anything because I don't want any to be spoiled. It's your man, what's his name? Stephen, Stephen Graham is in it. And basically his 13 year old son, it starts off and the police are breaking into their house, looking for a suspect of murder. and they're like going around the house with all these guns. It's insane. And then it turns out the 13 year old son is the accused. And so the first episode, it's literally the camera doesn't stop. It's one camera. I'm like, how did they rehearse it? Because there's no stops.

  • Speaker #0

Sorry, this cameraman needs like 17 BAFTAs and an Oscar.

  • Speaker #1

But no one's like stuttering. Like I'm dying to look it up. It must have been fierce rehearsal. Also, Ashley Walters wearing the glasses. oh boner killer

  • Speaker #0

I know and also sorry I did not know he was in So Solid Crew oh he was in Top Boy was in Mick told me last night after we watched it wait sorry what's So Solid Crew I got 21 seconds to go

  • Speaker #1

I got 21 seconds to go you like me you know kind of like Blazing Squad 2 multiplied by 10 plus 1 Romeo done oh I didn't know that yeah these rubs not Romeo but Ashley Graham yeah he was in they completely boner killer him in this he looks like a like a full on square yeah He's wearing glasses and like this he like honestly he does nothing for his sex appeal.

  • Speaker #0

He's the detective and he's really good.

  • Speaker #1

But can we agree that he's a boner killer?

  • Speaker #0

    Yeah, a boner killer.

  • Speaker #1

And I normally have the hots for him. I normally have a boner for him.

  • Speaker #0

But now killed. It's probably best not to fancy someone in this show given its dark, dark nature.

  • Speaker #1

    But he's the nice policeman.

  • Speaker #0

    I know but

  • Speaker #1

But sure he's in Top Boy and he's like a full blown gang leader so oops.

  • Speaker #0

Stephen Graham created it. Oh. So Stephen Graham did a guy called Jack Thorne, who also did This Is England, which Stephen Graham is from as well. And then Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

  • Speaker #1

Are you not afraid to Google it?

  • Speaker #0

    No.

  • Speaker #1

It's getting insane reviews. They're like, this is a masterpiece.

  • Speaker #0

It got a five star on The Guardian was like, this is the best piece of TV we've seen.

  • Speaker #1

I don't want to read it though. I just saw the title.

  • Speaker #0

Oh my God. So Adolescence is produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment Company. Oh. One of the creators. He said, my resting heart rate was really high. Yeah, he said it was very complicated to write. I'm not allowed to cut away or go anywhere else. Yeah, it was like a really fun day working out how long the car rides take from the house to the police station and the walking route. So they had to write the scenes based on how the shot would work.

  • Speaker #1

And like the way they're talking to him, like he's a 13 year old guy. Yeah. Boy, sorry, convicted of this murder and the way they're talking to him and the way he's. brought into the police station and what he has to answer and talk to the doctor and do all this kind of stuff. I'd say it's pretty true to life, would you?

  • Speaker #0

What actually happens. Yeah. He was like, oh, we arrested him about 25 minutes ago and we like pressed balls and it was around 25 minutes.

  • Speaker #1

    Yeah.

  • Speaker #0

So it is like actually what happens. You know, that kid who plays the 13 year old boy, he has never acted before and he sent them in a video and they took him. Like he's never, he just sent in like a random audition tape.

  • Speaker #1

This sort of shit never happens.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah. He's so good because he's like, The success of this show really hinges on how good that kid is. And he is amazing.

  • Speaker #1

    Oh,

  • Speaker #0

    my gosh.

  • Speaker #1

Anyway, that's my record. I'd highly get on it. It's great. But don't watch it if you're in a sensitive space or hungover. Yeah. No, no, no. I'd watch it kind of midweek.

  • Speaker #0

    Yeah. When you're more centred.

  • Speaker #1

    More centred, like not affected.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah. The acting's incredible. Well, see, everything Stephen Graham does is amazing. He's like a little staffy, isn't he?

  • Speaker #1

    You are so great.

  • Speaker #0

He is, isn't he? He's like real like, especially when he gets like Papa Bear. He's like,

  • Speaker #1

    Did you do it?

  • Speaker #0

Did you fucking do it? Look me in the eye.

  • Speaker #1

    Tell me now. Oh,

  • Speaker #0

I'm only going to ask you this once.

  • Speaker #1

    Come here, son.

  • Speaker #0

Oh, I gave myself goosebumps. Great racco.

  • Speaker #1

Thank you so much for listening. That was riveting, a few of those debates, Galser.

  • Speaker #0

    I enjoyed it.
