Hello and welcome back to House of Gossip, or HOG as we're belovedly known by our listeners. We are Sophie Lyons and Clara Kavner, bringing you your pop culture nourishment week after week. Again, we've loads to talk about this week. It's like we're inundated with celeb news and gossip, and we're going to make it a bit positive this week because there's a lot of shit going on. Clara, how are you feeling this week?

  • Speaker #1

I'm very well, thank you. So, yes, we are hoping to put a positive spin on all the dark and sad celeb news at the moment. So I am looking forward to being raised up by some fun news. You... Oh,

  • Speaker #0

sorry. Do you mind if I get that?

  • Speaker #1

Sorry. Oh, how dare they interrupt your Westline.

  • Speaker #0

    Sorry, that's never happened.

  • Speaker #1

    Do you have a delivery?

  • Speaker #0

It was like he heard me about to hit a beat. I was like, you ready? Da-da-da, da-da-da. That was so mean. Fine.

  • Speaker #1

    Damn you, mailman. Sorry.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah, we are hoping to raise you up. To be fair, I think we're always quite positive, even if the news is negative.

  • Speaker #1

    Yes, yes, yes.

  • Speaker #0

I would like to think so. Let's kick it off with a J'adore and J'Test. Gazza, what are you J'adore-ing as you're testing this week?

  • Speaker #1

I've got a J'adore this week, even though I've had such an awful week. I don't know if I can really go into it, but let's just say the police and Chief Wiggum and his boys have been involved. We're all fine. No one was hurt. Everything's replaceable. Just a bit of a shit week. So that's why the pod was a little bit tardy this week. But anyway, onwards and upwards. And what got me through some horrible few days was reruns of

  • Speaker #0

    Friends. Ultimate comfort TV.

  • Speaker #1

I was really obsessed with Friends. And so much so that my... 29th birthday was a surprise friends themed birthday with everybody dressed up in their favourite friends character like there was a pregnant Phoebe and everything I never heard about this yeah and then we had you know when Joey wears all of Chandler's clothes there was loads of really fun oh my god I love that idea fun costumes and yeah I just you know the way it's on Netflix I go through like you know remember when it was on Comedy Central you just watched it all the time totally now that it's gone onto Netflix you're like oh I'm not really in the mood but oh my god can I just tell you it's something about like reruns in general they just like soothe yourself like I know the jokes I'm basically miming along with the episodes oh it's all I do yeah I only watch reruns oh and it's like season one to like see I'm on like five or six now like I do skip certain episodes and stuff like that but it does fall off a bit of a cliff and then it was so funny because me and Mick were both in the front we were watching it together but then we kind of fell out of rhythm because you know when you like you're like I'd listen to a podcast when he goes off, but he'd still watch Friends, but like be doing stuff. So then we fell out of sync and he's blitzed ahead of me and he's on like the season eight or nine. And I'm like, oh, no, I can't go that far. I don't like the new episodes.

  • Speaker #0

    Really?

  • Speaker #1

I love those episodes. No, I love the older ones.

  • Speaker #0

Like when Mike and stuff comes in.

  • Speaker #1

    No, I just, I don't know. Oh,

  • Speaker #0

    I love those.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, I don't know. I just think they get too like gimmicky. Like in the older episodes, there's so much more. They have loads of other friends and like the surrounding characters are amazing. Same thing happens with Sex and the City. And as the longer it goes on, the more it becomes just about the main characters. Then they go off these gimmicks, like Monica and her cleaning, Joey having sex with everyone and ordering two pizzas, and then Phoebe's ditzy. But it's like...

  • Speaker #0

    Chandler's gay.

  • Speaker #1

    There's not... Yeah, it's just...

  • Speaker #0

The Chandler's gay thing just really doesn't age well.

  • Speaker #1

No. And yeah, some of this stuff really hasn't aged. But anyway, Friends has just been soothing my soul. We had to mix it up, and we're now doing Harry Potter's. So it's like a mix of...

  • Speaker #0

    With the autumnal energy.

  • Speaker #1

    Oh, it's so cosy.

  • Speaker #0

    One must watch Harry Potter.

  • Speaker #1

Yes, it is very good. And I'm really lolling at how shit, no offence, but how shit Daniel Radcliffe is at acting. At most stages, we're on four now, but like he's just so wooden. They're like, Voldemort's going to kill you. And he's like, frozen face. Like he doesn't look in any way concerned. He's so wooden.

  • Speaker #0

    Is he?

  • Speaker #1

Oh, if you, I don't want to spoil it for people, but like it's, I find it quite noticeable. I would like, he's like, what? Where's Hedwig? It's like, there's something really serious that's happening. He's just motionless. Ron, George,

  • Speaker #0

Fred, what are you doing here?

  • Speaker #1

    Yeah, it's so funny.

  • Speaker #0

Merry Christmas, Ron. Merry Christmas, Harry.

  • Speaker #1

You know the Ron, just finally on Ron. You know, it's like, follow the spiders. Why can't it ever be follow the butterflies?

  • Speaker #0

    That's cute.

  • Speaker #1

And it was great. Sorry, lastly, lastly, it was great seeing, you know the scene in Philosopher's Stone where they're like, And you're free to check the king.

  • Speaker #0

    My.

  • Speaker #1

Harry, run, no, run, no. I was seeing that in its natural form. When I make my move, you're free to check the king. Run, no, you can't. Oh, not me. Not Hermione.

  • Speaker #0

    You. It's so good.

  • Speaker #1

So those just lovely moments have really. Let my soul soar and get me out of this black hole of a week. So yeah. So what are you loving or hating?

  • Speaker #0

Mine's a jetess, just very top line. The people going around London with really bad head cold slash flus on public transport in my office. It's so disgusting. Wear a mask or work from home. It is so gross.

  • Speaker #1

Did we not go through a pandemic where we learned this?

  • Speaker #0

No, we didn't. Apparently I shouted at two people in work yesterday. I was like, sorry, did we not just have a conversation yesterday that if you're not well and you have a head cold, not come into the office? And the two of them were just like, and I was like, you should work in a different room. I don't want to get sick. And then by the end of it, one of them was so sick, she apologized, being like, sorry, I shouldn't have come in.

  • Speaker #1

That's kind of, that's really gross.

  • Speaker #0

Like, it's so disgusting. And there's people next to me on tubes, like, and it's on the Lizzie line, which is actually very ventilated. Wear a mask. Also, I went home last weekend. Yeah. Come back on Sunday night. I have the plague sitting next to me with no mask. And I was wearing a polo neck. And all I did was continue to put it up all over my face the whole time because he was like an absolute slobbering mess.

  • Speaker #1

    Oh, my God.

  • Speaker #0

    Wear a mask.

  • Speaker #1

    Wear a mask.

  • Speaker #0

    It's so gross.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, but imagine being in work and someone goes. Sorry, you're just so snotty. Like, why did you come in? Because that's like, it's just to get your germs, stay at home.

  • Speaker #0

I just think like COVID was very difficult. And I know life's moving a million miles a minute now, but like we need to take some learnings from it.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, it's just like poor hygiene. And you have the facilities to work from home.

  • Speaker #0

It's inconsiderate. What if someone's living, going to see their grandmother or something?

  • Speaker #1

And like COVID is pretty rampant. It's obviously it's not as bad, but it is like people are still getting it.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah. Not into it. So if anyone listening now is on the way into work and you're very stuffed up, just turn around.

  • Speaker #1

    Yes.

  • Speaker #0

    Turn around.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah. Swivel on your boots and go home.

  • Speaker #0

Or if you're being made, go in, wear a mask.

  • Speaker #1

Wear a mask. I find like if you're, say if you're reading on the tube and you don't have headphones in, you really notice the amount of sniffling that goes on. But if you remember what you were saying about your headphones.

  • Speaker #0

I've stopped listening to it on the tube, basically. And I'm not going to do that. Now I can hear everything. And let me tell you, it's not nice.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, because it's everyone just like sniffling away.

  • Speaker #0

I know there is someone with a stuffed nose listening. And if you don't hear what I'm saying, just stop listening. Roger that. Gazzer, this week we've put the news bulletin on your desk.

  • Speaker #1

    Yeah.

  • Speaker #0

I'm going to transport you over from the studio live to yours. OK, are you ready?

  • Speaker #1

Thank you, Sophie. I am reporting here from the wild shore of Ireland. I am on location reporting from Ireland's marine waters. It is blustery. It's windy. The howl of the Atlantic is coming in here at me. Don't make unnecessary journeys. Basically, there was a sighting of a rare killer whale. in the Irish waters with also the beaked whale spotted this summer. So I don't know what that global warming is the reason behind that.

  • Speaker #0

    Absolutely terrifying.

  • Speaker #1

    They are vicious.

  • Speaker #0

There is a free willy off the coast and people say they're calm. They're not calm. They're caulking whales for a reason. I won't be going into the sea. No.

  • Speaker #1

The way they hunt is like how wolves hunt. Like it's like pack killing and they tire out their prey and they have all this communication and they swim all around. Yeah, it's like, it's really amazing. And what I love about the, I think it's like a pod of orcas, they call them. The woman is the matriarch, like the queen bee essentially, of the pod. Proper order. And then she looks after everyone. She's kind of like the Tony Soprano of the group of killers.

  • Speaker #0

as it happens in life usually now.

  • Speaker #1

So yeah, I think, yeah, Irish water is no longer safe. Killer whales. At least their fins are huge so you can see them coming. So just stay shallow, people.

  • Speaker #0

I would. just die if I saw one.

  • Speaker #1

They are. The problem with the Galerill is they just look so fun. And I don't know if it's because...

  • Speaker #0

    They look like they're smiling.

  • Speaker #1

They look like a panda of the sea.

  • Speaker #0

They do. They look like a happy panda. Waterborne. Yeah. I honestly... Now, you know, people are saying like there's perks to global warming, which, I mean, warmer summers or whatever. That is absolutely... terrifying. I associate Ireland with being safe.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, our neutrality on land and there's not even any snakes here. Like a bumblebee is probably the most dangerous thing. And now our waters. I thought it was just jellyfish. Now it's killer whales.

  • Speaker #0

    No, it's really scary.

  • Speaker #1

They are terrifying. It's just because they look like a dolphin or something. Anyway, Sophie, back to you in the studio, Sophie.

  • Speaker #0

Thank you, Claire. Now, I heard rumors of something recently. And I know you used to watch this TV show as well. One Tree Hill. One Tree Hill was like a big one in our house.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, much bigger than the OC. Lasted longer.

  • Speaker #0

I don't know if it was bigger. I felt like it was a different time period, was it?

  • Speaker #1

Oh, sorry. In my household. Yeah, I think we watched.

  • Speaker #0

But was it a different time period?

  • Speaker #1

No, there was a... There might have been O.C. first and then One Tree Hill kind of came along and took off.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah. And they were both really different, obviously. But like One Tree Hill really has a moment in my kind of early teens, I think.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah. Especially as like a basketball playing school, you know, it was like a lot of...

  • Speaker #0

    Oh my God.

  • Speaker #1

    Mirror school activity.

  • Speaker #0

Like when we were in the singlets, you'd be like the female Nathan Scott. They were actually a similar color, sadly. They were.

  • Speaker #1

What was your man, the other guy called Blondie Hella, Chad Michael Murray, what was his character called?

  • Speaker #0

    Lucas.

  • Speaker #1

    Lucas.

  • Speaker #0

    Lucas.

  • Speaker #1

    And their rivalry.

  • Speaker #0

And Dan Scott, who was so hot. Sorry, so I've heard different stuff over the years, like the women, especially Sophia Bush, who played Brooke. She came out like a few years ago when all the Me Too was happening. And she spoke up about, I think it was the head producer or something. He sounded like an absolute monster. He was pitting the girls against each other. He was like making them dress very, like in revealing clothing. Like it just sounded like a really toxic set. And she tried to kind of stand up to him, but they all only kind of came out like a few years ago. And then someone recently told me that Hayley, who is Bethany Joy Lenz in real life, was in a cult throughout her time on Wuntry Hill. And so I went into a Googling hill and I was looking at it and then she has a book coming out. I think it's coming out in the next few days called like, is it like Dinner with the Vampire, I think. What? I think it's like Dinner with Vampires is what it's called. And it's basically about her 10 years in this cult. And it was all throughout the show. And then I almost fell off my chair yesterday because then I see she's on Call Her Daddy, obviously to promo. I didn't give anyone attention yesterday. I literally couldn't stop listening because she had said there was a few excerpts of like, you know, how she lost loads of money and all that. But it's a long enough episode. Oh, my God. This this story is bizarre. So she basically touches on stuff. And then the book obviously is the main subject. So, like, I'm definitely getting the book. And this cult she was in was called the Big House Family. And she grew up in a pretty religious family anyway. And then she said one of her friends was going to some Bible study of this new thing. And she went along and then everything slowly turned into a cult. And she only realized, I'm assuming, 10 years later of what was going on. And they're called the Big House Family.

  • Speaker #1

    That sounds like nice.

  • Speaker #0

I know. They sound bizarre. So she ended up marrying one of the cult leader's sons. And she, I think she gives him a code name. And the cult leader apparently was a complete narcissist.

  • Speaker #1

    They always are.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah. It turns out that he was banned from other parishes or something like that, leading them. Obviously, they found out why, you know, later on. But he kind of came in and it was a full family. And she essentially got brought into this cult. So she's 43 now. And she said this happened, was going on all during One Tree Hill. And she said it completely like relationships and stuff with... the cast and stuff were completely affected because of the control this cult would have. Like they also had a massive control over her career in general. You know, they wanted to know what her plans were and if they didn't like them, she wouldn't do it.

  • Speaker #1

Well, it's a bit like, not Scientology, but like that kind of cult and celebrity connection.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah, kind of. Now I'm completely paraphrasing, but these are the bits that I remember that stood out to me that I was just like, oh my God. She said there was only one person on the cast who is the guy who played Chris Caller. You know, the kind of country guy. Yes. He was really cringy. He was the only one out of the whole production that was like, are you in a cult? And she was like, he was the only one who said anything. And she said her and Sophia Bush basically couldn't be friends because of their beliefs and how they were so different at the time. And they're very good friends now. But she said during the show, like, they just couldn't be because of the beliefs. But they like have a podcast now, like a One Tree Hill Review podcast with the girl who plays Peyton. So it's the three of them. And I'd seen that maybe like two, three years ago. So they're obviously friends now. So she didn't have sex until she was married. She's actually like quite like her character. I feel like she kind of is her character. Yeah. It was very like, it was kind of like watching Hayley. Confusing. She didn't have sex until she was married. And then she said kind of as time went on, she kind of realized she had nothing in common with the cult leader's son. And it was just kind of this arrangement. She was obviously living away, filming One Tree Hill, but she said because of the lack of things in common and then obviously physical chemistry and stuff like that. She was like, the cult put them on a sex schedule.

  • Speaker #1

    Ew!

  • Speaker #0

I know. And stuff like he, the ex-husband, hated when she was kissing Nathan in the show. Like, he hated it. I think he asked her to quit, something bizarre. She said she lost $2 million to the cult. I think she basically is, like, out of money, which is absurd. She said even the legal proceedings of the divorce, like, washed out so much money.

  • Speaker #1

    Oh my gosh.

  • Speaker #0

I know, there's so much going on in it. It was hard to digest. But then another thing she said was that the girl Alex Cooper asks, being like, apparently people are saying that there is an issue between you and the girl who plays Peyton, who's Hilary Burton. Yeah. And of course I went Googling. So they were doing this podcast together. So they're friends. Yeah. And obviously something has come out in the last while. And then I went, I saw some TikTok. And apparently it's a few things. Apparently stuff in the book that... Bethany is put in the book was agreed to be kind of not mentioned. So that annoyed Hilary Burton. That's one thing. Then apparently they both have books coming out around the same time. And the book covers are very similar. And I saw them. They are similar. And apparently when your one released the book cover, Hilary Burton put up an Instagram being like, I don't think imitation is the biggest form of flattery. I think it's just annoying.

  • Speaker #1

    Oh.

  • Speaker #0

    And then a third thing.

  • Speaker #1

    What a feud.

  • Speaker #0

I know. It's so awkward. A third thing is they're saying they have completely polarizing views. One being vaccinations and one being LGBTQ things. Oh. Essentially alluding to the fact that maybe Bethany Joy Lenz is anti-vax and something not vibey with the LGBTQ. So Alex Cooper asked her about this. She was like, I love Hillary. I've no, like, I've nothing. against her and I really hope we can kind of sort this out. And she goes, there have been bizarre misunderstandings that I hope we can figure out one day. And then your one Hilary Burton stepped away from the podcast.

  • Speaker #1

I had heard that, that she had stepped away. I just didn't really realise the feud.

  • Speaker #0

But she said it was in line with her leaving the show, which matches up a bit too well, I feel, because it's a review podcast.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, if you're not in it, it might be a bit weird that you're there.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah, but then... They also launched a YouTube channel and Hilary isn't involved. It's explosive. I cannot wait to read this book.

  • Speaker #1

    Wow.

  • Speaker #0

    It's insane.

  • Speaker #1

You just wonder how people fall into cults.

  • Speaker #0

She said, someone said, no one means to join a cult. She was like, no one means to do it. She was like, I only realized it when I was out of it. Like, and it happens very slowly. and the way they do it.

  • Speaker #1

They kind of like slowly, slowly into water. You don't really realize.

  • Speaker #0

And I think she didn't have a great relationship with her parents, I think.

  • Speaker #1

Always pick on the vulnerable people with like bad families.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah, I'd give it a listen. It's insane.

  • Speaker #1

Wow. Sounds like she had a really interesting life. I always think of cults like you have to do everything together or like that she was allowed go off and become famous. But maybe they wanted her fame to talk about, to give the cult some fame.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah and they would want control over what she was doing Role wise and stuff I think she was supposed to be on like something like Broadway And then it ended up not happening because of the cult Imagine losing two million to a cult It's like Scientology in that sense Yeah

  • Speaker #1

God I never knew she was in a cult That's so mad I know I hope she well is pro LGBTQ plus Hopefully she'll be able to like go on and have her own success And not have to give everything back to that stupid cult

  • Speaker #0

    I know it's insane I couldn't stop listening

  • Speaker #1

they're just so slippery cults like they're allowed to exist they take all your money they prey on vulnerable people

  • Speaker #0

I don't know it just feels like it's it should be illegal but how do you decide like what's a community and what's a cult Didn't we do an episode on cults like years ago?

  • Speaker #1

We did. We did. Oh, sorry, we did. Yeah,

  • Speaker #0

can I remember as a Jared Leto? I always remember you saying that.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, that was a weird one. I'll go back and listen to that old episode of 30 Flirty and Perishing.

  • Speaker #0

    Yeah.

  • Speaker #1

    Oh, wow. God, poor Bethany.

  • Speaker #0

I know. Also, sorry, I'm just thinking, what would her opinions on LGBTQ be? Because Sophia Bush is a lesbian.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, maybe like we're just speculating here, but maybe that's what she meant being like, there's some... bizarre things I need to explain or like there's what did she what was the quote that you read there like there was some bizarre bizarre misunderstandings so maybe that's it maybe she's like no I'm not like this is a weird thing to have to defend yeah Hilary and Bethany feud I know wow wee speaking of secrets kind of Miss Mariah Carey was on the podcast Last Cultureistas with Bowen Yang from SNL, who will be coming up in my, we're actually going to do a Breco based on that's him and Matt Rogers. And they interviewed Mariah. They went through her back catalogs because they're like huge Mariah Stans, aren't we all? And they were asking her about her secret grunge album. And they were like, when are you going to give it to us? This long lost album, like, where is it? Mariah was like, I'm just so mad it hasn't come out yet. I really tried for... It's come out, but I don't know who to drop it with now. What? When she was recording her Daydream album in 1995, one of her biggest albums ever, she recorded this grunge album. And the label execs, particularly Tommy Mottola, her toxic ex-husband, didn't want her name attached to the project. And she got into trouble for recording it. But at the time, there was loads of grungy music.

  • Speaker #0

    She got into trouble.

  • Speaker #1

She got into trouble, yeah. And she asked, could she put it under an alias and release it that way? and let people discover it like as a kind of a secret, like a little Easter egg for fans. They wouldn't let it happen. And she actually does talk about it in her memoir that she has done it. And it's just sitting there collecting dust. Tommy Mottola wouldn't let it happen. And she doesn't know what to do with it now. She also sang, but she did go, she sang as a backup singer on this, there was this female grunge band called Chick. And she did backup vocals under an alias called the letter C, Sue. What a funny...

  • Speaker #0

    I love that.

  • Speaker #1

    Mariah the Rocker.

  • Speaker #0

    Grunge.

  • Speaker #1

    Why not?

  • Speaker #0

I can't imagine her in grunge attire.

  • Speaker #1

What a metamorphosis that would be if we got, like, I'd love if they were able to release it or, like, got it out there somehow. Like, Tommy Mottello doesn't control her anymore. Like, come on. Like, give the people what they want.

  • Speaker #0

Artists don't do that enough where they explore another genre.

  • Speaker #1

I know. Just come on. Get out of your comfort zone.

  • Speaker #0

    Come on. Yeah.

  • Speaker #1

I just love the idea of Mariah Carey in like kiss makeup.

  • Speaker #0

Wow. Well, from one Ron's secret to another. Let's talk about Victoria's Secret 2024 fashion show. Now, I haven't watched it. I saw bits. and did a bit of research myself. I haven't had capacity to watch it, to be honest with you. I have some top line things that I took from it. Let's rediscuss?

  • Speaker #1

    Let's.

  • Speaker #0

Great. So just to reiterate, we spoke about it a few weeks ago that it was coming back. It must have been in the September episode.

  • Speaker #1

    We did.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah. And how they were making all these promises about being more inclusive because they got in so much trouble for blah, blah, blah. So just to... Just to paint a picture, it started originally in 1995. That was their first show. And it was 2019 was the first one that wouldn't go ahead. And this is their debut back. They've got new execs in and stuff like that. And the whole thing is about being more inclusive. And a lot of people were saying, and you said last week, I think, about, you know, will they be borrowing from Fenty by Rihanna of what she did? A lot of the stuff they're saying that they did. Just even the way they debuted it, it was a live show on Prime and you can shop it at the time. All those kind of like commercial stuff was all very similar to Fenty. A lot of people were saying that the music was the main part. Kate Moss also went down the runway. Tyra Banks, Carla Bruni. Then Cher performed. Tyla, who is so fabulous.

  • Speaker #1

Tyla, who is walking better than some of the models. Oh my God, that girl can move.

  • Speaker #0

Diaz, such a strut. Also, there was a lot of people saying that Tyra's walk was sloppy. And the fact that she was a judge on America's Next Top Model is hilarious. And I would tend to agree with them. The walk was not great.

  • Speaker #1

I don't think she was wearing a supportive shoe. Her foot wasn't jumping from side to side of that stiletto.

  • Speaker #0

I was like, how is that working?

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, it was like how she didn't twist her ankle is a feat of body engineering.

  • Speaker #0

But just fall over, like the angling I thought was bizarre.

  • Speaker #1

    Yeah.

  • Speaker #0

She's probably so used to walking in heels.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, or just walking on her tippy toes.

  • Speaker #0

She did the clothes, and then everyone walked behind her. You can see there's videos of like what audience members took and the atmosphere in the room is so different to what you'd think.

  • Speaker #1

Do they add like crowd noises or whatever? Oh,

  • Speaker #0

yeah. And when the girls are like waving, pointing at someone, you'd think someone's like on the other side, but that's just not the case.

  • Speaker #1

    Stop!

  • Speaker #0

Yeah, there's like live videos of like people sitting down, like influencers, obviously, that they've invited. And it's very like a song is playing. The pace the girls are walking is so slow.

  • Speaker #1

    Interesting.

  • Speaker #0

They obviously do something with camera speed. The way the girls are walking is way slower than I thought.

  • Speaker #1

    Interesting.

  • Speaker #0

And also I read a thing saying that with the amount of stars they put in this show and the musical guests, all the budget must have been blown for production because apparently it didn't read as pizzazzy and the pageantry was lost watching it online. And there was no pink section.

  • Speaker #1

    Mmm.

  • Speaker #0

    Which was always my favourite.

  • Speaker #1

People were really giving out about the no pink.

  • Speaker #0

    That's why I always liked Victoria's Secret.

  • Speaker #1

Because you like seeing them in their like pajamas and like, oh, this is just me. And then you think when you buy those pants, you'll look just like her or whatever or just like them.

  • Speaker #0

I'm wearing a pair at the moment. Yeah,

  • Speaker #1

they're great. They do great lousy wear.

  • Speaker #0

    I love it.

  • Speaker #1

    What are your,

  • Speaker #0

like I have a thought, but what's your thought?

  • Speaker #1

My initial thought was when I saw the models coming down the runway. How? how awful all of the outfits were. Like, I thought, like, you know, this is the first fashion show in five years. Do you remember in the old days, like, you could see the girls were in pain, but they're in these, like, massive...

  • Speaker #0

Yeah, well, did you see Gigi Hadid set?

  • Speaker #1

They scrimped on some people and they spent on others because, do you remember, like, there'd be the big, massive wings? Some of the outfits, like, Adriana Lima was in a tartan bodysuit that was just so disgusting and these, like, scraggly wings and it's like... You guys haven't been here in five years. Like I thought Kate Moss's wings were really cool. Tyler's wings were really cool. Like they obviously spent, and like Bella Hadid in the red, I think that was her clothes, closing runway.

  • Speaker #0

    Yeah.

  • Speaker #1

Like they obviously spend and save in other places, but like there was one girl was wearing this kind of like robe kind of like, but like it wasn't, it was like hanging off her elbows and it had all these like stars coming off it, but it looks like, cheapo 4th of July costume. I just thought nothing, there was no like real wow. And then any of the people they had in diversity were all covered up. Tyra Banks'outfit was terrible.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah, people were saying Ashley Graham was covered up, but apparently she asked for like more fabric. Yeah, of course she would.

  • Speaker #1

But sorry, of course, Ashley Graham, like your tokenistic diversity, and I'm using like you're a mid, not even a plus sized model. In Victoria's Secret eyes, you're a diversity hire and you're surrounded by the Hadid's, a lot of the veteran Victoria's Secret models, and you're like one of the only people of like a diverse body shape. Of course you're going to be asking for more fabric because everybody around you is like a beanpole. I found the... Wow, sorry, I'm getting so angry, but I found...

  • Speaker #0

    Yeah, I'm loving it.

  • Speaker #1

I remember watching those fashion shows when I was younger, like in like fourth year and fifth year being like... I am going to get that body and being under this trance of like, I need to have that figure. I'm putting myself under all this pressure and going to the gym and being annoyed at yourself.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah, thinking it's like actually achievable naturally, which it isn't.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, by going to like Riverview three times a week, they're like swimming, you know, it's like, and you're under, you're putting yourself under all this pressure, like there's pressures in school, then in college. And maybe I'm having more of like an emotional reaction to the... unattainable body standard that they set. But to come back and just be like, OK, they said that they had like 25, what was it, 50 models from 25 countries. So in terms of like race diversity, it was like it had a really wide spectrum. But like I found that body type of like, you know, Bella Hadid's like eight pack and like her like svelte physique. I just found that actually really boring. And it was funny watching it now being like.

  • Speaker #0

I don't find that body shape attainable anymore. Or I don't even think it's like sexy. I think I used to think that that was like, oh my God, these girls look amazing. But I just feel like they're still, they have not changed. They have still stayed the same.

  • Speaker #1

    That was my feeling.

  • Speaker #0

    Yeah.

  • Speaker #1

They've stayed the same, I think. I just thought it was a lot of tokenism. And then like some of the tokenism, I was like, did you plan that outfit?

  • Speaker #0

    Yeah.

  • Speaker #1

Like Ashley Grahams was just like this black lace bodysuit and a pair of black underwear. And I was like, why didn't you give her one of the pizzazzy pageantry things? Do you know what I mean?

  • Speaker #0

    Really badly taught for you.

  • Speaker #1

Like that's the stuff. But I'm just like, you've had so many years to do it. So the amount of outfits you need, it just looked like there was loads of concentration on one. And then, but like, sorry, Gigi Hadid's opening thing was fabulous with the wings.

  • Speaker #0

    Was it the pink one?

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, with the wings, they're like mechanical. Yeah. Also, apparently it's really awkward because your one arena shake.

  • Speaker #0

    Yeah.

  • Speaker #1

Is that her name? Was there and that's Bradley Cooper's ex. And she's going out with Bradley Cooper at the moment.

  • Speaker #0

Oh, God. Dressing rooms would be very far away. The Telegraph, which is a bit of a rag, but they had a really good headline that said, Victoria's Secret fails to stay relevant with a tired pageant of Domonté thongs.

  • Speaker #1

    Yeah.

  • Speaker #0

Like, I just think it's tired.

  • Speaker #1

I saw one and it was just like, it hasn't changed. And like, how could it change?

  • Speaker #0

    Exactly.

  • Speaker #1

Their image is that. And if you're trying to alter it, it seems ingenuine. So you're kind of like almost... Like you're shooting yourself in the foot almost by even saying you're going to change. Yeah. I mean, it's very difficult to do. I don't know how you do it.

  • Speaker #0

    No.

  • Speaker #1

Apparently they started calling them as well. Like they started calling angels the collective because people didn't like the angels thing.

  • Speaker #0

You may as well break it down and build it again rather than like renaming the same thing.

  • Speaker #1

You know, when you see it, like I see it online with campaigns and stuff and they'll have a model who is different to all the other ones and there's only one of them. Then. It doesn't look genuine. It looks like tokenism.

  • Speaker #0

    Yeah, it's like boxed tick.

  • Speaker #1

But by including them, you're including them. So like, it's very difficult to get it right. Like, how would you? I don't know how I'd get it right, you know?

  • Speaker #0

Yeah, you're totally right. Getting it right is really difficult. But like, it seems like, it looks like they didn't really try. They blew the budget on like Kate Moss.

  • Speaker #1

    Why was Kate Moss there?

  • Speaker #0

And she was a surprise. Like, no one expected her. Or like, why is she there? Tyra Banks apparently just, it was basically on screen for like 10 seconds. I only really saw it through Instagram.

  • Speaker #1

What was she wearing? She was wearing like...

  • Speaker #0

    A corset.

  • Speaker #1

Gym leggings and a corset. And like, I know people will be like, oh, but you know, she's a bit older now and all that kind of stuff. But she still looks fire.

  • Speaker #0

    Yeah, she's so beautiful.

  • Speaker #1

You'd wonder the thought process. Like, was she like, I want to wear this kind of thing.

  • Speaker #0

But it still has this huge pressure. The Victoria's Secret, like remember all their like diets would get revealed where they're like... shedding water, drinking these weird shakes, you know, dropping all their water.

  • Speaker #1

Yeah, they don't drink water for two days.

  • Speaker #0

So you can see all their muscles. So like, Tyra of all people knows that. And all those models know going into it that they're like, okay, fine, I just won't drink water for two days before and I'll shed all this excess water weight. Like, I think that runway is kind of tainted.

  • Speaker #1

    Yeah, like the secret's out.

  • Speaker #0

    Yeah, the secret's out.

  • Speaker #1

    We already know.

  • Speaker #0

But like it's tainted. So like by walking down that runway, you know the scrutiny. And especially with Tyra, who was like so awful on America's Next Top Model. Like, you know the comments that are going to be said. So obviously those people want to be covered up because they don't want any of the comments because they've said all those bad comments before.

  • Speaker #1

And when they came out from doing the Fort Torrey Secret Fashion Show, because the last one was in 2018, there was like four or five years where people were like, models were coming out being like the atmosphere backstage was horrific this happened that's happened the audition process so everyone knows the dark stuff behind it there's actually a book and a podcast being like is it falling from grace or something

  • Speaker #0

I listened to it a few years ago because I hate the way they do like you know the backstage thing that just seems so disingenuous you know from the sideline and they're like you

  • Speaker #1

I loved it at the time when I was younger.

  • Speaker #0

    Loved it at the time.

  • Speaker #1

Doing like the musical guest and stuff. But then did you ever see that clip and it's Kendall Jenner and someone's like, could you take a photo on your phone of yourself? Yeah. Like a fan was like, can you take a photo of yourself? And Kendall takes it and is like smiling and takes a photo and then shoves it behind her, doesn't even look at the girl. And I was like, I'll try and find it for you. It's so good.

  • Speaker #0

Oh, Kendall. Yeah, I think it's just like, don't say you're going to celebrate all women and then just have majority like thin women. with not real much diversity. It feels like they blew the budget on like getting the big people like Tyra and Kate Moss and all the vintage kind of Victoria's Secret girls or the quintessential ones, but then scrimped on the budget everywhere else where they could have actually, you know, I'm sure Kate Moss was paid like bajillions. Maybe they could have spent the money better on like better outfits and actually rebuilding the show from the ground up because it seems like they're only They're trying to put a mask on it, but the core is still the same. They're just like, ooh, here's a glitzy diamante cover. And we hope you won't notice that the whole thing is just still the same.

  • Speaker #1

    Yeah, I agree.

  • Speaker #0

It's hard to survive as a business, but the comeback is just so outdated. So yeah, Victoria's Secret, I don't know where you go from here. It's a hard thing to rebuild. So it's easy for us to sit in the sidelines and go, but like having three plus size people or like, sorry, plus size, midsize people. As your body diversity is bullshit. And we can see through your diamond day thong.

  • Speaker #1

I would just think damned if you do damned if you don't. Like, what would I, I don't know what I'd expect them to do.

  • Speaker #0

I think they should have just let it die in the past. I don't know. Just do something new, something different.

  • Speaker #1

    But then that's like, I don't know.

  • Speaker #0

What's more damaging, not doing it or doing it?

  • Speaker #1

    But then I think it's a catch-22.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah. Like maybe think of something new rather than trying to. restart this old thing that has so many bad...

  • Speaker #1

    But they'll say it's a legacy.

  • Speaker #0

Yeah, but it just has so many bad connotations for like millennial women for sure. And then like, what kind of like body standard are you setting the new generation? It's just like the same thing happening all over again and we don't do anything about it. Like the same lesson being learned again and again and again, putting women under this crazy standard. And then, but then it's like, oh no, it's fine, we have Ashley Graham. Great. Anyway.

  • Speaker #1

Gazzer, it's your turn for a record this week.

  • Speaker #0

Thank you. So just jumping back to the mention of Bo and Yang earlier, I have sent this to so many people. SNL returned a few weeks ago. This clip, I've been watching it for two weeks now and it still makes me lol. Bo and Yang is famous for his dressing up. You know, you know that in SNL they do the newsroom skit with the guy who's married to Scarlett Johansson. Yeah. So Bo and Yang, where I first fell in love with him, was where he was interviewed as the iceberg from Titanic. Yeah. He was like, everyone's blaming me. It's so unfair. It's like, they saw me, like they bashed into me and I'm getting on plane. But he did one recently where he was dressed up as Mudeng, the pygmy hippo from Thailand. He's only 10 weeks old. Firstly, the costume's amazing, but it's this five minute skit where he is being interviewed as Mudeng and being like, everyone's so obsessed with me, blah, blah. But then he kind of correlates it with Chapel Roan and what she was saying recently about like... a parasocial relationship her fans have with her and like Chappell was giving out about like you know fans coming up to her and accosting her and touching her and asking for photos and she was like whoa she said on her Instagram a while ago she's like whoa so he kind of is interviewed as Mudang with the like personality of Chappell Rowan it is so funny skits like that make you like reaffirm your faith in Saturday Night Live and why those skit shows are so important it's just so funny and then he got a bit of backlash for being mean about chaperone but him and her are friends and he interviewed her recently on a on a in a newspaper so like you know it's not in bad taste it's kind of making light of what she was saying and um the fact that he related it to a cute little hippo is just so funny I can't wait I've seen it on my feed I need to watch it

  • Speaker #1

I'll link it in the show notes of course we hope we brought some sunshine to your day and again if you're sick don't go into work You can let us know what you think, what you want us to talk about.
