For all my singers-songwriters looking for inspiration, here's a short interview with Nia Soul aka Nia Chennai!

London-based R&B / Neo-soul singer, songwriter and artist Nia Chennai shares her new female empowerment anthem ’WHO’S THAT GIRL?’, out everywhere, and produced by Nikhil Beats, previously featured on Sounds So Beautiful.

For the occasion, we had the pleasure to have a little chat with Nia. The great story behind her music, is that she makes song to instil self-love and confidence.

In the following interview, she replies to questions such as what helped her build your own self-confidence, talks about the debate around Body Positivity.

Hot off the release of her summer single ‘So Pretty When You Cry’ - which landed praise from the likes of COLORS, Noctis, Viper Magazine, Tmrw Magazine, Earmilk and many more, Nia returns with a 2000s inspired slice of R&B heaven, with a message of self-love. With her previous music centering love and heart-break, Nia wrote this track as a message to herself and others to love yourself first.

She says, “The track was inspired by my journey of learning to believe in myself wholeheartedly. I wanted to pour my confidence and manifest my goals into this song. I had been writing a lot about heartbreak previously, but this time I wanted to shift the focus and talk more about how I feel now, and what I want my future to look like.

I wanted to instil the confidence and self belief that I have, in other girls like myself who are trying to make things happen for themselves. I'm at a place in my life where I know what I want and I’ve planned a route on how to attain it and because of that, when I close my eyes and think about my future, my thoughts are as vivid as ever. I want people to listen to the song and feel motivated, like they can do anything they put their mind to, because being an ‘IT GIRL’ doesn’t come from being beautiful, it comes from being your best self and recognising it.”

Nia’s music has been praised for its raw and relatable themes, exploring topics such as love, heartbreak, and self-discovery. Her powerful vocals have allowed her to create a unique sound that captures the hearts of her listeners.

A rising artist on the UK R&B scene, Nia’s music effortlessly combines soulful melodies with honest and introspective lyrics. Born in South London and raised in Surrey, Nia’s musical journey began at a young age, where she was exposed to a variety of genres from her family’s diverse musical tastes. With a deep passion for music, Nia began writing her own music and posting covers of her musical influences on her social media platforms, whilst drawing inspiration from her personal experiences and the world around her.

As Nia Chennai continues to grow, she hopes to inspire others with her music and connect with people from all walks of life. Whether performing live or in the studio, Nia’s passion and dedication to her craft are evident in every note. Keep an eye out for this rising star.

Hey, it's your girl Nia Shanae for Sounds So Beautiful magazine. Why do I make music today? It's a form of connection for me. I feel like I used to be a very quiet kid. It's just a way for me to express my truth, express my feelings. A lot of experiences we go through, especially as women, that are universal and a lot of people can relate to. Building my confidence before Who's That Girl, I would honestly say it has been a journey, a journey that I'm still on. I feel like it's more of like a mental thing, surrounding myself with supportive people, being in an environment that allows me to flourish. We all have the right to feel beautiful in the skin that we are born in, no matter what size, race. I think the fact of us all being different is what makes us all special. Recently I've been on a bit of a fitness journey but for me it's about being healthy and being strong and you know being able to get up on stage and not be out of breath. As a young child you know watching MTV and all of these programs people like Beyonce, Amy Winehouse, Tina Turner there was just this confidence and knowing of self. which I always just aspired to have. Getting to work with Nikhil for Who's That Girl was such a pleasure, I really love working with him. Me and him could babble on for days just talking rubbish but he's such a great producer and he's an artist as well so you should check that out. hmm my favorite song that i've ever written i would have to say tea lady i would say my favorite song is call it quits so far that's released because we've got some bangers in the vault i had been listening to bag lady by erica verdue which is one of the many women i love Yes, so I am of mixed heritage. My mum is English and my dad is Caribbean, more specifically Saint Vincent. I would definitely say the food and the music is my favourite. I love a bit of dance hall, soca, community and vibe that is brought together in the Caribbean. I can't wait to get on stage again soon. I'm going to be supporting Sam Rex at his headlined show later this month and any other performances always keep an eye out on my socials for because I'll be posting them there. I'm super super excited for 2024 to make more memories with you guys in person.
