Ready for a particularly comprehensive and inspiring definition of health !?

The WHO encourages us to integrate art into our health. The latest reports from 2019 and 2023 (compiling 900 studies worldwide) highlight the importance of artistic activities and "exposure" to different art forms...for our well-being and our health!

A great opportunity to give a new Artist a voice in the podcast (after our three-Michelin-starred Chefs from the Restaurant le Clos des Sens ⭐⭐⭐ in episode 4 and the triple-platinum band 💿💿💿Les Trois Cafés Gourmands in episode 5).

Today, in the series "Care from Elsewhere," we have the pleasure and honor of welcoming Sam Yau, who shares his vision of health with us, through his artist's eyes.

Our guest today is one of the people who made the biggest impression on me during the trip.

🗣️Sam is a retired corporate executive who divides his time between managing his investments and writing poetry.

He has reinvented his life several times: from a six-month-old baby on a refugee boat, to penniless student from a distant land, to CEO of a billion-dollar company, to president of a pioneering and iconic American personal development center.

He is also a poet who writes about the soul's journey, the vicissitudes of life, trauma and healing, consciousness, science, spirituality, and mysticism.

Sam also holds an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago.

" As I sculpted my poems, my poems were sculpturing me at the same time.  Writing poetry has become a most joyous and uplifting spiritual practice for me."

Sam Yau

🌱Our conversation was particularly inspiring for me on many levels; I hope you too will find seeds of health to germinate.

Hello, welcome to Health at your fingertips, the podcast about wellness and healthcare. My name is Antoine Lacouturière, I've been practicing osteopathy and sophrology for over 10 years. Driven by an ever-increasing thirst for knowledge, I set off with microphones to meet passionate experts in person. For the first time this year, the podcast has been exported to the United States, an opportunity to fulfill a childhood dream and meet other professionals around this theme that punctuates our lives. Health. My English is still improving. Thank you for your understanding. The most important thing is what our guest said. I'm sure... you'll find something interesting in it. We continue the series healthcare from healthware with meetings in the USA. Our guest today is one of the people who made the biggest impression on me during the trip. He is not a healthcare professional yet I felt he was deeply caring on many different levels particularly through his poems available on his Instagram account, followed by more 130,000 people worldwide. Samuel is a retired business executive. He has reinvented his life several times. A six-month-old baby on a refugee boat, a penniless student from a distant land, the CEO of a billion-dollar company, and the president of an iconic American personal development center. He is also a poet who writes about the soul's journey, the vicissitudes of life, trauma and healing, consciousness, science and spirituality. I had the pleasure of discussing various topics and several occasions with Sam today. I'm sharing the recording of his vision of health which I found particularly inspiring. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on social media and continuing the discussion. Nice listening. Hello Sam, I'm very happy to be here with you and I... I would like to ask the question, what is health for you? Could you share with us your vision, please?

  • Speaker #1

Yes, yeah. So we human beings are very complex people. And so I look at health at multiple levels. And so I would say to right at the beginning, we can have physiological health, physical health. We can have psychological health or mental health. And if we have both, it's important to have both. So I would say that's wellness. and then we add the spiritual dimension, I would say we would have wholeness. Let me explain each of this level. So on the physical health, it's more than just the absence of diseases. So that's really the minimal. Our body is amazing. We have potential to have optimum health rather than the absence of diseases, which is a very low standard. But for a lot of people, maybe that's what they can have because of some limitations. So that's the first level to me. So we know physical health, the main thing is what we put into our body, the nutrition, and how active we are in terms of keeping our body. moving and having exercise. So that level, a lot of people would assume that's good enough. But we know now, okay, psychological health is as important. And for us to have that, we must understand the body-mind connection. So it involves something about the ability to manage stress in our life in general. It includes the ability to perform well in a job and earn an income to support our basic needs and wants and maintaining healthy relationships. So actually, another way is that... We are mentally healthy. We don't have mental illnesses. And what does that mean? It means that there's a sufficient level of self-worth and optimism for one's life. A healthy ego and boundary, emotional self-regulation and resilience, and ability to empathize and build stable and caring relationships. And also the ability to evolve in consciousness and to make progress in life, in our work, in our home, also including in our finance. So when we have both, physiological and psychological health. We are in a state I call wellness. So when you hear people say, you know, I feel good about myself, or I have a loving family and many good friends, or I have peace and harmony in my life, we know that's indications of wellness. But each of those two dimensions of health is a spectrum. Physically, you can go all the way to be an athlete at an amazing level of performance. Emotionally, you know, we can have different degree of happiness or satisfaction in our life. So we have those two dimensions of physical and physiological, physiological and psychological. But they have a whole spectrum of potential. And that's the places for personal and spiritual growth to move along. So how far you can go, it really depends on your awareness of our potential. It depends on how much effort you want to put into it to achieve as much potential you have inherently in yourself. So those are the two dimensions. So what is wholeness? That's another dimension we can add to it. So I call it spiritual level. Spirituality means different things for different people. But I would just emphasize one piece. To me, the easiest way to understand that is just using the word meaning and purpose in your life. And meaning and purpose, usually people found it in different ways. They have different definitions for different people. So you have to find your own, whether it's your meaning and purpose in your life. But it appeared to me that most people at a certain part in their life, sometimes earlier, sometimes later, they find themselves attracted to and identified to something bigger than themselves. So it can be a mission for social reform. It can be an institution like your church. It can be a religion, right? It can be a religion or a social reform where you want to make a difference. like on climate change. So people identify with that and then find themselves have passion for it. And that's what they find, their meaning and purpose. And they want to devote their time to those. Other people find meaning and purpose in relationship. That's enough for them. They want to be more loving. And when they put all their emphasis... in the family and that that can be their meaning and purpose it's way more than a relationship now is occurring in in in a higher level of intensity so i just consider that a one way to define spirituality but there are many other different way people will have so they just ask themselves. So when we include meaning and purpose and have a passion for that and doing that, then we come to the place of wholeness. So wholeness includes all this dimension. So what about the feedback if somebody feels my life is whole? So here is some of the expression. I'm totally comfortable with myself. I accept all of myself. My strengths and my weaknesses, my flaws and my accomplishments, they have a total sense of acceptance of themselves and very comfortable. They have very little regrets about their life. They are netted. They will say, I'm very connected to my friends and family and community and support. They feel ascended, living fully, they're living fully. And they, of course, they will say, you know, my life is filled with meaning and I'm devoting my time for my passion to give me meaning and purposes. If we have all this dimension, I think there's a higher level of health, is wholeness. But they, each one of this dimension, include, you know, of this, they have almost infinite spectrum for us to grow. We can be more whole tomorrow than today. We can be more healthy. Physically, we can be more emotionally resilient tomorrow than today. So there's almost infinite ability for us to move along the spectrum of higher and higher level of health and wellness. Well, that's a brief summary of what is health to me personally.

  • Speaker #0

    Thank you so much, Sam.

  • Speaker #1

Well, okay, I want to add one more thing. So it's a question of to attain this, the idea of wholeness I have just described. One must have awareness of this multiple level. Not everybody is aware of it. And one must also align them. So like in the body, in your field, right? You know, you know the skeleton structure, they have to be aligned, right? So our physical body and our emotion and our mental body have to be aligned. And then our purpose, and they must be aligned to our higher purpose. in our spirit. When we are fully aligned in all those three dimensions, that is how wholeness is achieved. And so that's just, I want to add that before I finish my remarks.

  • Speaker #0

Thank you for the additional parts. It's very important. And the alignments, it's maybe not always, but very often. in my work so i understand i feel i see so thank you for that the episode comes to an end with this word i hope you take away something positive an image a piece of advice seeds of health if you want to support the podcast i invite you to take a few moments to leave five stars on apple podcast or spotify You can also contact me directly via my website antoinelacouturier.fr I wish you a nice end of the day, evening, night maybe.

    Thank you so much, Sam.
